A DAY ON A TUGBOAT - Towboat captain and deckhand

- The deckhand fell in and the captain flooded the boat!
I got to ride on a tugboat! It has always been a dream of mine to ride on a tug, and Harken Towing was very kind to let me follow along and film what it's like for them behind-the-scenes. A day in the life of a tugboat team if you will.
There are 2 members on a boat. The skipper, Ken (captain), and the deckhand, Brett. These 2 guys were kind and unsuspecting but they were true professionals when you got on the boat. They are skilled in ways I had never seen before, and being on a tugboat was a lot more exciting than I expected.
We spent the day pulling and connecting log booms, as well as helping to push a barge through a bridge, all on the Fraser River, between Vancouver and Port Coquitlam.
What are your thoughts on tugboats? Is this what you expected it to be like on a tug? Have you seen Harken Towing in action before?

What video would you like to see next? Do you have any video ideas for me?

Big respect for deckhand Not everyone can do this job
I guess im one of the few people because im a deckhand on tugs in Nyc. This was interesting to see. That deckhand has some serious balls running on those logs. My tug is a 3000hp and we move petroleum barges.
Yeah this company is a little more hardcore compared to the average Tug company. In Vancouver they have lots of companies that mainly move petroleum where the deckhand doesn't have to jump off the boat. Assuming those ones are similar to your job.
This dude is so gifted. He gets to go on vehicles you’d never see us drive or go on. I’m proud of you man that you get to do this stuff
So cool to see your first tugboat experience was in winter!
Harken is a great company and is run by a real great guy . Ken McKenzie. Went with his equipment many times to look at logs or scale logs.
Harken seems to be a great company, and takes safety very seriously! I'm glad you also had a positive experience with them, Don.
Takes safety very seriously but a guy went into the freezing temp waters....ok
@Daniel Sigh. Okay.
@@egomaniac247 I mean every company probably doesn’t that because it’s the easiest way to do it
I really liked the "look of the river"- great perspective on working on the river. Loved the video, Mike!
love to see this from a landlubbers perspective, reminds me that I have the best job in the world
Nice vid man. I've been working on tugs for over 10 years now. One thing that I love about it is that it's very different from what most people do. However, and I'm sorry to burst your bubble here, but it looses its glamour after a while. Everyone that doesn't do it thinks it's awesome, but eventually it's just another job. But it is more interesting than riding a desk.
It is nice to get a change in life and try something different. Most of my career have owned and driven Semi Trucks but took a two year break and went Commerical Fishing starts out as an exciting adventure then the glamour wears off a little bit but no regrets met some awesome people and enjoyed working outside. Back Trucking again but when I'm out in the field tasting the weather it brings me back to the deck soaking in all of nature and how awesome it is to harvest and transport the fruits of our world to feed and equip the world.
The purpose of life is to explore one's own life to its fullest, to explore all dimensions
What a beautiful scenery! This man is living the dream.
Real Hercules these guys , unbelievable done by one guy.
Great video, keep up the amazing work. I see this channel growing!!
I grew up in nooka sound started at 17 had a skipper who admittedly used to try knock me in never did. In 5years l went in once to my waist that was flattering out cedar bunddle booms with bolt cutters loads of fun. When l started l had to put the west coast boom chains over my shoulder to carry them there 70lbs new after a bit that changed. I used a pevee on boom because it can pull stuff together you can still fish the toggle up then a pole with tip cut off on barge so l could pick up tow line on a empty. Loved the job. My fuel gauge was how high the boat sat but at a point we'd dip them never heard of running dry but.... Common mistake is running on all filters because if you get plugged you shut down but if you run on one with 2 as reserve you hear it starve whip down open valve on a clean one keep going. Tugs are hours of boredom with moments of sheer terror.
Man, I can only imagine... thanks for sharing.
Was about to ask you if you're local. But you answered my question in the end.
Yep, born and raised in Vancouver, but travel as much as I can. How about you? Live in Vancouver?
Born and raised in Surrey! Can't wait to see future video's.
Great production, The Mackenzie family are the best in the biz on the Fraser , Ken & Dorthy (RIP) founded this company in 1948 and their kin carry on today, the founders would be happy to see this video... well done pilgrim {:-)
Wow! Thanks for the feedback. It was really nice to hear! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
Very interesting video
Good job!!
I am making a model of a small logging tugboat.
Another awesome episode! I started watching your channel for the travel. I liked the train videos too. I came to appreciate the entertainment value as well. But I have to say the variety of what you do adds so much to the channel. I loved this one! Thanks!
Very cool Michael. It reminds me of the lumberjacks! Well done
+3 Day Weekend Lifestyle thanks Michelle, it was a fun one to film!
I was on a Tugboat in Atlantic Canada in 2015. It was just after a hookup and we were were towing a Barge back to the Harbour when one of our Secure Lines snapped. Luckily I decided to have my "after work" smoke in a different spot than usual, because I still remember how it swung past where my legs would've been. Always make sure you take care of your gear, and let me be an example of how smoking can save lives XD.
Definitely becoming more interesting!
Thanks Jane! I'm working on it! A couple of good ones coming up.
Cool knowing you took out a loan to be making these videos for us, I do hope you got enough subscribers now to keep you going forward, plus sponsors ! I’m now watching and liking all your videos, they are all wonderful!
You did an amazing job making a video, I’m planning to do it soon When I go and get my twick card and put in my application, I hope 🤞🏻 to get the job career as a deckhand and become successful, I pray and hope I make it for sure
Good luck

That’s a huge amount of snow for Port Coquitlam!!!
Yes! What a day for me to be on a tugboat. The one day of the year we get snow 😄
That was pretty awesome but I only saw you tug that one barge for a minute. I was hoping to see a lot of tugging in a day on a tugboat :)
A classic video
Really great and insightful video Michael. I started watching and you were at 498 subscribers - now 499 and counting +
Big Valley, I'm happy to have you aboard.
Awesome. Thank you.
It was my pleasure.
That lumberjack dude is a beast. I betcha he benches 300+
Awesome video...im a tug captain on the Illinois river...very different than what I just viewed..
Wow! I’d love to come see what your day looks like!
Great video. Loved it. My friend is a Tug Capt in NY. I will tell him about this video. Give you a lot of credit filming in the snow. I'm a snowbird and go to FL for the winter. I never want to see snow again in person. Haha. Will be doing fishing videos here soon. I just posted a drone video which I did in Jupiter, FL. Time to watch LivePD now. Have a good night.
my dad was a tugboat skipper in ny harbor. we did ship work. sailing freighters
I was considering trying ot be a deckhand until I watched him hop out onto that snowy log. nope
get that snowy log parkour!
I run the Mississippi river pushing barges i love it
4:30 looks as If the ship is sinking
try a tugboat that assists larger vessels next
Nice
Great video!
super cool video ...I love to be there with you ...have fun
Great video. Where is this located? I could not get the name of the town at the beginning. Thanks
It's in Coquitlam, which is a neighbour city to Vancouver, Canada.
Great Video! I've done a lot of them and this ranks up there with better than good, also ran a tug for a few years before I went to school to do video. You need to give your self a Well Done.
Wow Rob! Thanks so much.
It means a lot to hear that from both a tug guy and a video guy.
Thank you.
Very cool, and no way would I do that, I'd fall in. Lol
Tonya! I bet you wouldn't fall in! I bet you'd be great!
spend a week on a tug that works Houston on a chemical tow. It's a lot of fun especially when you pull into the dock at 2:30 am and have to catch lines.
Sounds tough
Hey, how can you become a Deckhand?
Where can you applicate?
Very cool!!!
Thanks Trish! I had a blast.
Omg such nice video
I wonder if Mike is reading this comment section after the release of the newest tugboat video 👀👀👀

Thank God that captain didn't fall in
Worked for them back in the late 80s
Great video, but that job is not for me, made me shiver just thinking about falling in the water, then the guy did. Thank you for sharing it!
This one time when I fell in the ocean i got to ride on a boat... sad day that.
nice dude!
This is TUGS
#Tugs
I believe that we should not call this boat as a tug boat. It's a work boat guys
How to apply this job
Boats on the Mississippi River can get up to 10,500 horsepower and hold 95,000+ gallons of fuel
👍🏼
I go on monthly trips with my dads to work on his tugboat his boat has about 6000 hp
+Anti Christ whoa! Sounds like a big one! How long are you on the boat for with him?
DownieLive full shift man it's a quite a bit bigger than that boat but it's a support tow I he works near the mouth of the Mississippi River .its a z drive twin train engine tow sleeps about 9 seats about 50 can haul about 45,000 tons
+Anti Christ holy cow that thing sounds huge. Must be an impressive boat! What a fun trip.
Im a deckhand and it's the hardest job there is and the pay is shit 💁🏻♂️
Get with a better company.
