Is the monk who calls himself “Thanissaro” a spiritual teacher or a spiritual MASTER? 🤔
If you are uncertain of the distinction between the two, I shall be MORE than happy to enlighten you. 😇

@@TheWorldTeacher Thanissaro Bhikkhu is as it states = Bhikkhu/Buddhist Monk. Renunciant, teacher of Buddhasasana, Dhamma. He also does not call himself that, it is his ordination name.

Thank you for teaching the true Dhamma. Most so called Buddhists today just teach nihilism.

The audio quality is terrible. Can't you guys increase the gain and filter so that it is loud enough to hear clearly on a cellphone? Really, it's inaudible.

This guy has the same dogmatic, bigoted and self serving approach to Buddha Nature that the new atheists have about god and that Stephen Batchelor has about anything he hasn't personally approved of. Funny that this bikku preaches about the "wrong" dharma while adopting his own personal and completely wrong fetish of Buddha Nature. He even reads minds when he thinks he knows how I and many, many others understand such a thing as Buddha Nature. This Theravada vehicle seems at times to run on at least one flat tire - and Thanissaro is it this time.

I doubt thanissaro is bigoted. Regardless of his views, I imagine his intentions lay heavily on the side of benefiting all sentient beings. In regards to his views, he seems to derive them from a scientific/historical approach to the Tripitaka/ Pali canon. He is a Bhiku of Theravada which doesn't define as vehicle but rather "teachings of the elders". To resent the dogmatic is justifiable. But to hold resentment is a great hindrance. To resent the perspective of one man and project that resentment onto an entire tradition could be taken as bigotry. Even the bigoted have buddha nature. I wish you well

Right, one flat tire is only a partially disabled vehicle. Maybe you did not read my post but made some assumptions of your own? Insisting on driving on it is unwise - for the particular driver. Insisting that an entire recognizable group of followers hold the same flat tire as holy is really pretty silly. Unfortunately many teachers who have some wisdom, good intention, and hold right views are also religious bigots. Maybe you would like to revise some terms and sugar coat something here but I'm not too sympathetic with that. I believe the Buddha might have said something like "Misguided man." Yes, the bigoted do have Buddha nature so what is your point? Mine is that this monk teaches his bigotry as something like right view. I recognizing my understanding of this, as Buddha advised, instead of just swallowing it down unquestioned from this celebrated monk. Also, holier-than-thou pontificating is also quite delusional.
Good luck with that - which is as saying I wish you well.

What I understand you to be saying is that because thanissaro doesn't accept Buddha Nature as a teaching the buddha actually taught he is therefore a bigot. What I understand thanissaro to be teaching is that buddha nature is a concept not present in the Pali canon, and therefore something the buddha never taught. I doubt Thanissaro is hateful or even closed minded when it comes to Buddha Nature. I've heard other talks where he mentions that Buddha Nature might be a skillful teaching in very specific situations. But him having dedicated his life to the monastic code described in the Pali canon, makes him biased. You however seemed to have taken personal offense on his mention of buddha nature. I don't believe Thanissaro would encourage anyone to simply swallow anything, but rather use discernment and skillful action to practice the teachings and gain faith thru experience. Let me ask you, what is your experience with Buddha Nature? What is your experience with the Pali Canon? And is your resentment in line with that experience? I do quite enjoy dialogues of this sort, it's wonderfully refreshing. So please do respond. I wish you well.

'Experience with' Buddha Nature? Seriously? I'm sure you do enjoy whatever you think you are doing here.
And you do presume lots - too much.
No interest. Thanks anyway. You will have to entertain yourself. I cannot contribute.

Gabe Gossett Gabe, you responded very well and it's nice to see how you can speak so skilfully without siding with defilements. Earlier I listened to a talk where Thanissaro Bhikkhu mentioned how in the west people shy from the word defilement because we see them as our friends. This is sometimes blatantly obvious, and other times very subtle. However, practicing right speech is something you have clearly been developing. May you continue to find the causes of the Ultimate!
