  • In the summer, NCL's Prima sails from Reykjavik Iceland to Southampton England on a reversible 10 day itinerary with stops in Iceland along with ports in Norway, Amsterdam, and Belgium. Since this itinerary is often rainy and chilly even in mid-summer, do NOT buy the Vibe Beach Club pass! Here's a completely honest overview and tour of the Norwegian Prima. See our other videos for more on Prima's Northern European and Iceland ports and excursions.

    The ports were amazing. With the exclusion of Zeebrugges, you could easily get off the ship at any port without a planned excursion and have an enjoyable time. The unlimited premium drink package delivers as advertised. NCL Prima's Northern European cruise was definitely an experience. The modern design is nice, and the rooms are big enough to almost forget we weren't in a boutique hotel. But that's sadly where the good news ends, sportsfans.
    The outside areas were completely unusable due to cold temps and a lot of rain. Dining? Oh, let's just say they tried their best to cater to every taste bud, though some dishes were definitely more experimental than others. The Haven NEVER changes its menu throughout the entire 10-day cruise (MSC Yacht Club changes nightly) and becomes intolerably boring by day 4. Perhaps that's a mechanism to force passengers to pay for specialty restaurants? Fortunately, there are virtually unlimited restaurant and buffet choices so there's something for just about everyone.
    The entertainment was mediocre at best. From the mostly Russian Broadway wannabes (I suppose they look closest to American performers?) to a once popular and now washed-up Las Vegas magician eschewing a desperately-needed retirement because he can't live without the spotlight while doing card tricks on a video screen, it all could be done much better.
    The Donna Summer show was NOT a tribute, it was an oft confusing and wayyyyy too long (intermission needed) Donna Summer politically polar biopic that I'm sure has already put thousands of Conservative Americans in a tizzy. Three age-segmented Donna impersonators (led by a vastly post-prime version) performed one too many filler songs that most DJs might skip. Way too much dialogue and not enough of the hit music that made Donna iconic.
    Game shows were the same shtick you've seen on every cruise ship since the 1990s. How many times can you honestly enjoy Love and Marriage? The ship entertainment in general was run by a much too mellow, slightly awkward, and rarely seen cruise director - NCL could definitely benefit from some changes in that department. NCL actually made us yearn for Carnival's high-energy cruise directors and RC's high-tech ice capades.
    The race track is a very interesting innovation. But its very incredibly limited operating hours, long waits, forced solo time trials, $30 per race fee, and the severe wind-chill while you're waiting to drive in the North Atlantic make this experience undesirable. Much more palatable in the Caribbean.
    Don't get me started on the shore excursions-because nothing screams "adventure" like being herded in a theater with a host who had no idea what she was talking about and can't even run a lackluster PowerPoint (most likely created by Bob in accounting). Do NOT go to the theater at the ports - just follow the signs and get off the ship. You will be directed where to go, your bus will be waiting, and it's a much more pleasant wait.
    Overall, it was an experience. A memorable one, to say the least.

    I don't think the Prima is a good ship for this type of itinerary. I sailed her about a year and 1/2 ago ... transatlantic --- it rained a lot and everyone was crammed in the inadequately sized indoor public areas.
    I DID love the Indulge Food Court .... and my bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever had on a ship, but they need to get that ship over into hot weather sailing.

    • @admtim
      @admtim  Месяц назад

      Absolutely agree. This ship probably is PERFECT in its Texas-based Gulf of Mexico sailings, but offers inadequate public spaces for cold weather sailings. I guess it doesn't make sense to build a ship specifically for cold weather. We loved Indulge too, and we slept like babies!

    Thank you! We are considering this cruise and your information and ship tour were very helpful. Do you think The Haven is worth the additional cost?

    • @admtim
      @admtim  Месяц назад +2

      EXCELLENT question, and we've got a solid answer - NOPE. The price delta is WAY too high for what you get. Although our room was nice and our room attendant was seriously on point (and earned a life-changing gratuity), our butler was TERRIBLE, the Haven restaurant was just OK (the menu NEVER changed and special requests were declined summarily), and there simply weren't enough perks to make a $10k additional spend worthwhile. But don't settle for an inside room - save a small fortune, skip the Haven, and get a balcony room so you can enjoy the amazing views. Enjoy!
