In Germany, German Shepherds are still used for herding sheep. They look a lot like the original German Shepherds back when the breed was created, nothing like modern show lines. They don't just herd, they also protect livestock fiercely. I once went hiking and stumbled upon two old-type German Shepherds working with a herd of sheep, they were not happy about me getting too close and "told" me in no uncertain terms to back off, or else! P.S. The traditional German way of herding you described is still very much alive!
@@Mathguy363 Captain Max von Stephanitz developed the breed by combining native "sheepdogs" from different regions of Germany. Also I believe Captain Max was based in Saxony Germany. The german, belgian and dutch shepherd all descent from the same landrace. They are basically the same breed that got split because of political reasons. They then started selecting dogs that conformed to the new standard. The dutch for example started breeding only their brindle dogs even though they had dogs with the colouring of a gsd or malinois. This helped me to understand the shepherd I had when my daughter was a toddler. She amazed me one day when she started keeping the toddler in the driveway all on her own. She was following her nature. She had been out with us as I let the toddler play. I always dashed to stop the child when she would start to leave the driveway. My dog understood from my behavior and started doing what she naturally saw as her job. I didn't want the child to get into the horrible devil's club plant sprouts that would come up in our clearing. We lived in the WA rain forest at the time. Many years later after I learned a little about commands I had a cardigan corgi who worked with me to herd our 2 cats when they snuck out of the house. She learned come bye, come away and get'em. The last was when she pinned one and held it until I could run pick the cat up. Then we would go after other when the first was put in the house.
I'd love to train my shepherd with these people. I always wanted to try herding but was never lucky enough to find a sheep farmer/trainer in my area. My shepherd once tracked a sheep herd that escaped its enclosure and was roaming out in the forests. The farmer asked me to try because he was desparate. It was incredible to see, especially since she never worked with sheep before.
These people are so knowledgeable, and I love the fact that they have experience with both herding and protection work. I'm not into any of these things, nor am I a GSD enthusiast yet this us quite possibly your best video to date. Thanks!
Dogumentary TV. My favourite dog channel. Good to see German Shepherd herding, not only using for protection work. Always learning something, enlarging my perspective. Thanks for your quality work ❤
I was very happy to see this! My grandparents and uncle were sheep farmers and I can confirm that this how the herding/grazing system works in Europe. The best dog they had was a black belgian long-haired shepherd. Amazing dog!
Thank you for your lovely video, I have a working line GSD from Holland, he has an awesome drive but we do not have sheep so he is a pet - we use everything possible to try to simulate, i.e. ball throwing etc and lots of exercise. I found your video trying to understand what he was originally bred to do and it has helped me to understand him better, thank you again.. God Bless.
The only video I’ve seen a GSD doing its original job. Really miss my boys, 2 of the best dogs I’ve ever had, both passed after a good long life of 14 and 15 years. This made my weekend that much better, thank you!👏👏👏
@@MC-mk3uo Nice! My parents just got a GSD/Husky mix from a shelter. She mostly looks like a Shepherd, but with smaller ears, red fur on her back and almost white fur on her legs and belly. Personally think her coat looks better than the common Shepherd coat that you see everywhere.
Thank you for this. I see a lot of complaints from pet owners about their GSD's being GSD's. 🙄 Hopefully these series can help people make humane choices.
My all-time favorite breed of dog. However, I had to give my beautiful German shepherd b**** to my niece because I grew allergic to the heavy shedding. She's still in a loving home and still is an incredibly intelligent dog. She's a great guardian for the family and the little ones.
Just did my dogs herding instinct test, she passed beautifully but now....I don't know what to do next. I have lots of sheep farms around but the only trainer I could find is 2 hours away and booked up forever. Ps we do schutzhund too, my dog was super gentle with the sheep, it was fabulous to watch her instincts click in.
Brilliant and thank you. It gives me the confidence to try with my German Shepherd. I have a feeling he may bark too much. Not met any sheep, but when the friendly cows come up to the fence - he will go to one side of the group and bark before swinging to the other side of the group and bark. the cows back up a little but are used to dogs and seem too laid back to care much. My dog always comes away when asked and looks so pleased with himself.
I had a Border Collie that worked the sheep, when I got a GSD that BC couldn't understand why she didn't work the same way as she did! As the BC aged she was wary of ewes with lambs but the GSD would pounce towards the ewe barking and they moved away. The funniest thing was when the pair rounded up a herd of feral goats and brought them back to me.
