Tá trácht is cliú agus cáil, There is talk and honor and fame,
Anois le fada na lá, Now for a long time,
Ar Chill Chiaráin, Leitir Móir is ar Chinn Mhara, Of Kilkieran, Lettermore and of Kinvara,
Ar Mhuínis, Cloch na Rón, Of Mweenish, Roundstone.
An Dóilín is Clais na nUamhan, Doleen Harbour and Clais na nUamhan,
Is nach i gCarna bhíonns an spóirt a’ainn lá Mhic Dara And isn’t it in Carna that we have fun on Macdara day.
Nach aoibhinn is nach breá, Isn’t it pleasant, isn’t it grand,
Bheith i do sheasamh ar an aird, To be standing on the hill,
Is tú ag féachaint ar na rástaí i gCuan Chaisín. And watching the races in Casheen Bay
Ó na soithigh ag gabháil chun seoil, Oh, the vessels going under sail,
Gleoiteog, púcán is bád mór, Gleoiteog, púcán and bád mór (big boat) (I think these are types of boats)
Ó rástaí currach adhmaid is currach canbháis. From races with wooden curraghs and canvas curraghs.
Tá Púcán Pheaitín Rua, There’s Púcán Pheaitín Rua,
Is í ag tournáil siar ó thuaidh, Turning northwest,
Is ina diaidh sin tá Púcán Pháraic Dharach And after that is Púcán Pháraic Dharach
Is deacair tada a dhéanamh dhóibh, It’s difficult to make anything of them,
Go dté siad siar is aniar faoi dhó, Until they go over and back twice,
Mar níor buaileadh mórán fós ar Phúcán Bharrett. Since not many have beaten Phúcán Bharrett yet.
Tá John Dáirbe goite chun cinn, John Dáirbe has gone ahead,
Agus an Ráinneach lena thaobh, And the Ráinneach next to it,
Agus Beaincs agus í ag tournáil in aghaidh gala. And beaincs tourning against the wind.
Ó Peigín Chóilín Joe, From Peigín Chóilín Joe,
Is tá gruaite aici ann faoi dhó And she has won there twice.
Agus gleoiteog Mhichael Kelly as an Máimín. And gleoiteog Mhichael Kelly from Maumeen.
Tá moladh mór le fáil, There is great praise to get,
Ag an dream seo a dhéananns báid, By this group that makes boats,
Is tá moladh mór ag dul do Pháraic Dáirbe, And there is great praise going to Páraic Dáirbe,
Mar rinne seisean bád, Because he made a boat,
Ón bposta go dtí an ball, From stem (bow) to stern,
Agus réitigh sé amach í le haghaidh geallta. And he rigged it out for races.
Nuair a thiocfas lá an gheall, When the race day comes,
Beidh daoine ann as chuile áit, People will be there from every place,
Ón Spidéal, Ceathrú Rua, Rosmuc is Camus. From Spiddal, Carraroe, Rosmuck and Camus.
Beidh Óst’ na nOileán lán, Óstán na nOileán will be full,
Beidh ardán ar an tsráid, There will be a platform on the street,
Is beidh Terry is Tomás Sheáinín thuas ag damhsa. And Terry and Tomás Sheáinín will be up there dancing.
Beidh an Micí ’gus an Star, The Micí and the Star,
An Merican is an Áirc, The Merican and the Áirc,
An Mermaid, an Hunter is Gleoiteog Bhaibín. The Mermaid, the Hunter and Gleoiteog Bhaibín.
Beidh Capall Johnny ann, Johnny’s Horse will be there,
Agus Dudley le dul sa gcrann, And Dudley to go in the competition,
Peaitín Mháirtín is a dhúidín lán go claibín. Peaitín Mháirtín and his pipe full to the lid.
Nach aoibhinn leis an gcuan, Isn’t it pleasant for the harbor,
Is leis na hoileáin atá buan, And for the eternal islands,
Beidh áit istigh ’mo chroíse dhíbh i gcónaí. There will be a place in my heart for you always.
Leis na fir a sheol na báid, For the men who sailed the boats,
Thríd an Daingean is thar an gCeann, Through Daingean and over an Ceann,
Is leis na saortha a chuir an craiceann ar na múnlaí. And for the craftsmen who put a skin on the frames.

This reminds me of time I spent in Connemara over 35 years ago, exactly around these places. The music, the language, the images, they all bring it back so vividly. I haven’t been back but I think about it often and keep wondering when if ever I will go again. When I was young, like a lot of people I guess, I thought the Gaeltacht was such a bore, but now I am older and I just want some peace and quiet. I wish I could be in a place where it’s okay to just be a human being, where I am not constantly assaulted by noise and worried about crime and practically everybody is a stranger. This is a real song about real people and about a real place, not some imaginary celebrity universe. People in the comments know these places and are related to the people mentioned. It’s just not everyday that that happens. This is by far my favorite of John Beag’s songs.

    1:26
Micheal Kelly from Maurmeen (or Moirmeen) I was raised in England so my gaelic is terrible. But he was my Grandad.
He loved the boats so much. It was in all their blood. God its still in mine.
I never forget visiting as a kid when he lived with my Uncle Tommy,
His kitchen has a beautiful view of the sea in summer. And he'd have his wheelchair perched next to it with his binoculars watching them go at it.
I miss those days so much. I get why he loved that place and life. I'm stuck here missing it like mad.

It's a damn shame that you had to emigrate in the first place Padge. A shame for the Gaeltacht, the language, and the personal loss of many who were separated from their culture. And the shame is on Ireland for focusing on Dublin while the western seaboard hemorrhaged people, and for selling out the fishing communities whose lives and their ocean were intimately tied.
It was predicted by a well known Berlin journalist in 1914 that in an independent Ireland, Dublin would finish the job that England started and get rid of what was left of Gaelic Ireland while co-opting it's words for their new State's symbols. That prediction was an interesting one.
('Dublin' here for me symbolises the Irish state and political class as opposed to the actual people of Dublin, many of whom I believe would agree that the unimaginative and 'long fingered' approach of the State toward the Irish speaking areas has caused harm to the language, in particular since 2007 when Bord Snip cut everything. The unwillingness of the Irish State to secede any control to the regions or to delegate control over Gaeltacht housing and planning to Údarás na Gaeltachta is choking the life out of the Gaeltacht still. It seems like nothing will be done until all is lost.)

Can chaoi a bhuile tu? I think we're related. Mike Kelly from Maumeen was my uncle, my father was Joe, other brothers were Poiric, John (Sonny), and Pete. I'm in Huddersfield, where are you? Poiric Mhike lives in Leeds, one of his sons, my cousin.

@@josephkelly9833 He's my dad, he's still in Leeds for the moment, I remember My great Uncle Joe ( Joe Huddersfield was what we'd call him) but never knew he had kids. I miss him though, I know he passed away but need to make my way to Huddersfield at some point because my mums family are there too.
I should go pay my respects because i loved Joe.
I think were related, was it Joe who had the Sister Maggie and I know another sister moved to America I'm sure?
Our family is peppered around the globe it seems. Always hard to know for sure.
But pretty sure we're related. All the best regardless.

Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla Niall Ó' Dónaill 1977 "coigeal" (4) Narrow Channel. Then look up the Lettermore Causeway on the R374 and the townland of Cuigeal is right beside it - a narrow body of water - that's my guess at it!
