I have also seen similar names and things carved in a lot of England's old buildings like India. Sometimes people also write dates and once I even saw some names with dates of 1700s carved on the walls of a castle, because that particular castle was abandoned in 1600s and by 1700s it was already a historical site. So it is not like people don't do it in other countries. People are all the same. Of course in cities where buildings have security, you would not see that.
