the internet taught me a bunch of the “wrong” makeup practices. but it also taught me the “right” ones too. especially you 🖤
🖤🖤🖤🖤
It’s kind of embarrassing but I learned most of my bad habits back BEFORE the internet. I didn’t use the early internet for makeup tho (it was text only), I used it to lie to boys at Michigan State & receive hilarious ASCII “porn”.
@@montananerd8244 i NEED to know what on earth ASCII “porn” entailed 😂
I have learned a lot too. I thought I'd never be able to wear eye makeup with my hooded eyes until I started watching Robert
@@janetseidlitz5976samesies!
I feel like I practiced the dark arts of baking from pre-2016 gurus, and then suddenly you came along, whacked the blender out of my hand and said "Shame!" 😂💀💀
you mirrored my exact experience 😂 “the dark arts of baking” has me 💀
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Same! I only bake for stage makeup now.
@@RachaelTheRed baking should’ve only ever been for stage, theatre, drag and content creation. never for the average person going about their lives 😭
People with oilier skin actually find that their makeup lasts longer when they bake, you should only be baking for every day makeup when you REALLY REALLY need it
Honestly, until 2021 or so, I wasn’t very good at makeup OR skincare! Robert and James have completely changed the game for me! I’m loving makeup and taking care of my face more now at nearly 49 than ever before! ❤
Thank you!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
49?! There is NO way your pfp is of a 49 year old.
@@Kc-dq7zj it is. lol
@@Kc-dq7zj this one now is from last week
DITTO, I didn't really get "into" skincare and makeup until my 40s and my only regret is not doing it sooner. It sounded like a hassle and now I realize it's a hobby that I can really enjoy and that makes me feel good about myself and it's only thanks to people like Robert and James that I could recognize that.
Video idea! If you can get your hands on old Seventeen magazines, I’d love to see a makeup tutorial following those.
There are some wild internet makeup tips. But magazine makeup tips were even worse. In middle school I believed Seventeen magazine when they told me to put a shimmery highlighter down the sides of my nose to get a “model nose”. Imagine being an insecure middle schooler, whose nose grew before the rest of my face, putting shimmery highlighter down the sides of my nose. Ya know, the complete opposite technique to make your nose look smaller.
Luckily the nicknames that came from that makeup era gave me a great sense of humor.
I think about these old articles all the time!!! I can at least credit them with teaching no more than three brush strokes per nail when polishing. But I don't known that I can think of one other "tip" that has stuck 😂
My mom has a magazine that gives the "tip" of staying upside down (like, yoga pose upside down lol) for at least 5 minutes a day to grow your hair, because the blood will flow to your head and nourish it 😂😂
Sperm brows.🤣
@@asserehe5075 that works
I think James and Robert have done one together like that 🤔
That pigeon is learning all the tips, flying back to his pigeon town, & passing all that info on to all of the pigeons who live in that town. Soon, the pigeons from that pigeon town will be the most fabulous pigeons of them all, & all the pigeons from other towns will be saying “How are they so stunning? Why can’t we look like that!” Sorry, I just finished a 15 hour nightshift, so “The Exciting Adventures of Pigeontown” makes loads of sense to me right now 🤷🏻♀️ 💜💜💜
🤣
😂❤❤❤
I'd read this kids book, the illustrations would be fabulous x

**coos excitedly in poorly made nest**
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve changed my blush placement. I already have a long face, so I found that putting my blush on in the “1920’s” style really took many years off my face and makes me look a lot younger. For anyone unfamiliar with 1920’s blush, it’s horizontal but placed higher up on the apples of your cheeks, even a little into the eye socket. It really gives a youthful, healthy glow look. And even hides puffy eyes a little.
Oh yes, I am loving it! Other than I sometimes look like an aging flapper with high blush, long gloves (mine are medical lol), & a 90s bucket hat that looks like a cloche. I keep accidentally cosplaying a famous deceased rich spinster in my town!
Same here, long face and now I also do my blush horizontally and higher up, like you said more of a 20s style. So much more flattering when ageing.
I also love the look of blush on the apples of your cheeks. I have a strange shaped face, mix of a round and square, hard to describe. But I like my blush to look like I am blushing at something a hunky man just said 💜
I have a round face and I like to put my blush just above my contour if I'm going for a more sexy look, or high up on the tops of my cheeks/under eyes if I'm going cutesy!
i thought i was the only one thinking my face got longer with age 😮😮
You are one of the few RUclipsrs who provide useful content in their "Ad" videos, and you do it while being clear that the ad portion is an ad. If I had a product I wanted to advertise, you'd be my first pick, because I know people would still watch the video. You make it worth our while. Thank you, Robert. 🥰
Yes!
We know he's one of the HONEST ones! Plus, Robert, and James as well, don't partner or sponsor with just anybody. Another reason to trust them 🖤🖤🖤
They do not give bad advice and if they don't like something and something is shit, they will say it's shit! Love Robert and James 🖤🖤🖤

I'm actually heartbroken tho, Robert got me SOLD on Merit and they don't ship to New Zealand or Australia. Actually tragic
@@k89theposter, oh no! I hate when I can't get a product like that.
The pigeon watching you live had me in stitches, he’s got a front seat to the best MUA
That pigeon's makeup technique is now flawless
I will say that Robert showed me how to properly use concealer. 2016 youtube had me looking crazy with that triangle
😂😂🖤🖤🖤🖤
The triangle move works perfectly for me I would not change it for the world I use white concealer, white foundation and white powder goth here but the one thing I need to learn is how to make my lips look fuller as I have thin lips and have had a stroke so I don't want the stroke to show and just remember I only wear dark colours goth colours only and need to learn how to do eyeshadow today's standards I only know the 90's way
thank you for addressing the water/silicone/oil based products rule!! i’m sick of people preaching it like it’s the be all end all makeup rule
As a gen x er, I grew up with the eyeshadow sponge applicators you wipe the shadow on with. They were flimsy. You taught me how to tap, press and direct pigments with brushes. I keep watching your posts for more tips to update my look, thanks.
And then...and then...the sponge applicator would fall off the little stick 😆 Fellow GenX ❤
@@jenn8179If that sponge tip isn't gooping up already because the heat in your no-aircon makeup store isn't halfway melting the latex already.🤣
Same here . 😊
am I the only person alive who can use those things?
@jenn8179 omg, that's the first thing I thought 😂. The amount of scratches on my eyelids because I hadn't seen soon enough the crappy plastic stick was pointing out of the crumbling toilet paper thin sponge....
Younger generations really don't understand the luxury of nowadays being able to buy all kinds of makeup brushes for every mm of your face for little money (sigh, now I sound like a geriatric whiner 😅. "The youth of today...!").
I have loads now myself, but do tend to still use my digits frequently. Old skool, but often looks best.
needed this honestly. i got most of my knowledge in 2016 and we all know how makeup was back then. it was just A LOT 😭
😂🖤🖤🖤
Thank you for mentioning that all these "rules" made makeup unnecessarily complicated - that's honestly how I've been feeling all this time!
Look at you, Robert! Out here making me and a million others smile! 💜🖤💜🖤💜

@@RobertWelsh I remember when you had 150k subscribers, and didn’t know I could be so proud of someone I’ve never met in real life before when you hit 1,000,000! I can’t say it enough… Thank you for being so awesome!
Eye shadow...I know you have done a tutorial on smokey eyed looks but I have watch so many people over the years. I'd like to know more about other ways other than smokey to do eyeshadow. Also favorite makeup brushes for eye shadow please
Let's say when I did my make up like a lot of big US MUAs did, it always looked awful.
I loved make up so I went through this pressure I put myself in(?) to find a way to make it look good...just like in the videos.
Baking, too much concealer; wrong, but popular foundations, etc. ...
It was you, Robert, who made makeup finally work for me! From techniques, to products... it suddenly all clicked and bought me a lot of joy.
I found my way after all these years: little bit of foundation, no concealer, nice blush and mascara. And on "wild days" the tiniest bit of eyeshadow.
I would honestly love to hear you talk about the different types of mascara (lengthening, volumizing, curling, tubing, etc). I have such a hard time seeing any difference between all the effects, and I can't tell if it's just because I have super short, straight lashes!
I have a round face. For some reason, I look better when I don’t try to elongate my face with bronzers and blush. I actually find that I look better when I emphasize the roundness of my face.
Oh my gosh the silicone/water/oil based products was so helpful 😭 I have spent too long worrying about this and no one has addressed it. Thank you 🥺
On the oil/water/silicon base issue, I feel it's very much like skincare, it depends on your skin and the formulation. I've had a silicon primer who did nothing for me but slip and slide, and another that create a lovely comfortable layer for my foundation -- same brand, different line/formulation
SO glad you addressed the silicone / water base etc myth!
If i want makeup advices, i see your vídeos Robert. Your opinions are the only ones i really care about. I trust in you❤
Same💜
Thank you so so much!
I never understood the matching primer to your foundation base policy because most foundations are not purely oil, water, or silicone based. Most have a mix of two of those. Tons of foundations have water, oil, and silicone.
Hey! I commented on your live stream about a month ago asking for good SPF for under makeup as I was going to Florida, and you suggested Biore UV aqua Water. Just wanted to say it was 10/10! Still use it day to day! Thank you my love ❤
Biore is amazing, I've been using it for 10 odd years. It gets hot here in Australia, and this always stays put on my face. 😊
Hi Robert!! I'd love a small section of a video on how to do makeup for square shaped faces.. (well not an exact square, you get the idea!).
I've strong square features and feel like my makeup makes me look more like a lego!
I’d love to be able to send a picture to Robert and have him tell me how to do my makeup correctly 😂
ooo that would be really interesting and useful to see. I don't have a square face at all myself, but I'd still love to learn some tips
I’m not square, but I have very sharp lines (I look like a classic storybook mean lady who looks like a bird) and I’d love to soften the boniness of my face! I’m a cis lady with man face but there’s lots of people who want to soften their faces…
I just LOVE you and James so much. Not only are you both absolutely beautiful on the outside, but also on the inside. You never fail to brighten my day. Your parents must be fantastic people ☺️🤍🤍🤍
I was hoping the Merit products would come in their own mini Trader Joe's Tote....kidding😂🤣😂🤣😂
🤣🤣🤣
The blush info was so freeing. Now I know why I like my blush where I like my blush!
ThankU, I’m a makeup newbie (@54yr!) & trust what you say. When I try explaining to hub any new makeup products, I say: blame Robert..then we both laugh. I’ve been doing the ‘glow within’ and getting random compliments. L&B, Bella 🇺🇸
The brow tip is great, and honestly it also goes hand in hand with the "amounts" tip of other products. I see a lot of people saying their brow product gets crusty/white . When they describe how they use it, it is often too much product. And then of course there's different products suit different things/needs/people. (but that's a diff story)
Thank you for this video and for sharing, but also reminding us 💜
I'm just going to leave a comment here, just for fun. Now, onto the video!
“algorithm” 😂
Thank you! 🖤🖤🖤
What would I do without you Robert?! My God what you say makes SO MUCH SENSE! I have changed how I do my make up COMPLETELY thanks to you and now I look like I always wanted to! It blows my mind how all your advice is 100% true and for free for all of us! Thank you for sharing your huge amount of knowledge with us❤ You are just AMAZING❤Thank you!!!
Oh the satisfaction when he blends the bronzer. I suck at make up, this is so helpful.
I think we're the same age Robert, but remember the TERRIBLE advice magazines gave? I should go through my 20 year old issues of Allure I have at my parents' house (my mom is a pack rat so I have a huge library of early 2000s teen/fashion magazines) and send some of the worst to you.
Y'all MAC reps were a lifesaver. I learned a lot just by going to MAC to get my makeup done for school dances :)
Love that you give the straightforward theory and show in real time how that works and looks. No judgement, no pressure towards one way or another, just educational and friendly 🖤🖤🖤
I learned to be braver with the bronzer! No more wimpy pats or swishes for me. Thanks Robert! ❤
I remember when a woman asked me at a pharmacy I worked at which primer she could use with which foundation. I told her it shouldn’t matter too much and that she should be able to use any. She very belligerently exclaimed “no you can’t” and proceeded to treat me like I was an idiot for the rest of the time she was in the store. I was 16 at the time and was not normally in the beauty section of the pharmacy so I may have been wrong but she didn’t have to treat me like an idiot.
Idk why older women expect assistants at pharmacies to know all that. As if you tested all the configurations or have mua/cosmetic chemistry expertise working for around a minimum wage at a store. I only ask where things are located most times. I know in more high end stores like sephora they might get some training and get stuff for free to test but still, come on.
@@justynawisniewska1213 the only reason I was even in the beauty section (this was a mainly-medication pharmacy so our beauty section was relatively small) was because all the beauty section employees had gone home since it was near the end of the day. I knew very little about makeup and mainly only dealt with first aid products and/or medications. The only things I really did in the beauty section were process sales, clean testers and restock shelves.
@@ferrerorocherboi And that's all you should know really. Old ladies just have no grasp on reality.
Robert picked so many great techniques to correct for us! Brows, under eye conceal, contour and blush- yes, thank you!
Oh my gosh I LOVE Merit! Was just thinking about buying some more of their products I haven’t tried yet, and here you are making a bundle of exactly what I want to get! It’s clear how excited you are about it, and I’m so happy for you 💜
Robert terrified by a pigeon who sits and stares at him🤣🤣🤣 I would be too! Lol
Wooooof. Video starts at 5:40
Even as a makeup artist myself, it took me FOREVER (embarrassingly so) to accept that bronze and contour placement is not universal! Placement makes such a huge difference in the final result.
The Merit cream blushes are just… very special. They make me feel beautiful.
I usually prefer liquid blushes (juicy-pang, nothing beats them and they’re like $8) because I like being able to mix the colors together or mix them with a liquid highlighter to sheer them out, they’re just so adaptable and easy to apply.
But the finish of these cream blushes, it’s unlike any cream blush I’ve tried before and so easy to apply. Buildable enough where I don’t have to worry about clown cheeks. Gorgeously glowy. Great wear time. Just so special.
As I’m getting closer to the big 50 ( in 18 months) I’m finding my usual make up look is just not working! I always come back to Robert when I’m struggling as I know I’m getting solid advice. Thanks as always Robert ❤
The pigeon is mesmerised by your beauty! Perhaps it's after tips; Robert Welsh, bird influencer 😅😅
Learning to just put blush wherever i want has brought so much joy into makeup for me. I have a rounder face but always felt that elongating blush where im "supposed" to put it makes me look older. Egirl blush makes me feel like the cutest babe on the block so i do it even though it makes my face more round it makes me happy. Love your vids ❤️
Robert Welsh and John Maclean are the only people I will ever listen to regarding makeup. 💅✨
A new Robert video! Now it’s time to get the chores done while listening to him Like a podcast! 😂💜
That’s what I do with my concealer. These 40 year old eyes can’t handle a ton of concealer but they need it too!
I’m 45 and I get it. One day around 40 I just woke up and my makeup just didn’t look right…
And yes, I need something under my eyes but it took me a while to figure it out!!
I use your concealer technique for years now! Such a game changer as I have dry under eyes and looks horrible if I add product under the whole eye area. Thank you!
I love merit- that complexion stick is the BEST and lasts forever!
I'm still not good at it, but Robert has taught me to be better than I was, and I'm striving hard to improve, even at 56!
Great tips! I struggled for so many years (before inernet) with blush because putting it where all the magazines said it should go didnt look right on me. It left me blush shy. I have learned so much from your videos.
14:07 the perfect blush explanation!!!
Ooh I love your shirt!
I love all your videos, but especially the educational ones; I've learned so much, my makeup never looked better! thank you Robert 🖤
It really is incredible how I used to be an absolute makeup noob and now after watching Robert for years (oh wow it’s been years! 😮), I know a tiny bit more but there’s always more to learn. Thanks Robert!
Placement of blusher makes a great deal of difference the older one gets. I noticed this when I started to age - placed in the right place on one’s face gives a youthifying effect.
learned my makeup things from drag queens and late 90s goths and punks then a few drops from online MUAs like you 💚 so yeah, lets update the brains a bit 😊
Thank you Robert you have taught me so much. Products. Where to wear them. How to wear them. I purchase so much of the products you back. They are exactly as you say and I always love them. I am so glad you are here.
I don't use make up a lot, but I just love watching you! You're so funny and seem to be a genuinely nice person!
Your videos really helped me step up my makeup game and also remember that real skin has pores and we shouldn’t be embarrassed to have, you know, real skin! Commenting during the ad and definitely want to try Merit but I haven’t pulled the trigger just yet. Such gorgeous looking products!
Where to put the blush was an excellent tip 😘

Thanks for simplifying the blush placement 💕
I am quite pale, bronzer and contour terrify me! Finding a blush that doesn’t make me look like a cherub/clown is so hard! Love the blush shade you showed us, wish I was brave enough to try it!
I am also very fair. Merit’s blushes are really beautiful. I know they look really dark / pigmented however they sheer out very nicely.
The elf halo glow stick thingies are pretty good for fair skin, they do paler shades and they're inexpensive so you can play about them to get used to it. Start with a small amount, blend and build up
Robert, you saved my makeup and I can’t tell you that enough! I got interested in makeup in the start of online influencer world and my makeup never looked right on my skin. Now I can do my makeup so well I did my own on my wedding day with confidence!
I love to put my blush all across my face up under my eyes and wrapping around my temples. A little in the center of my lips (a bit above and under) makes them look extra tall and cute. Also sort of acts as a lip liner making them appear naturally fuller.
Thanks robert!! This was extremely helpful for me!

I love the blush technique you showed....I instantly saw what you meant about making the shape longer or rounder....thank you so much 💓 I have been doing it the wrong way all these years.
I will always remember practicing application with a new coworker and she tried to "bake" under my cheekbones. She hadn't applied any concealer or even foundation in that area. She just had a misunderstanding of how baking worked. She learned really quickly though, so that was good.
