When you graduate, choosing your first job is crucial because it shapes your future earning potential. In my experience, local and government jobs usually offer standard salaries based on qualifications. Even after working for 5 to 8 years, your pay might not increase much unless you excel and climb the career ladder. But not everyone can do that. Some US or global companies might offer higher salaries, though landing a job with them can be tough and sometimes requires a bit of luck. Interning with these companies can improve your chances of getting hired later on, especially if you perform well.
2nd this. My mindset backthen thinking going through SMEs I can learn from many touch points. But end up you will just be jack of all trade master of none.
Healthcare is the best in SG for those becoming doctors. Stressful is part of the job for these kind of top profession but high pay and secure.
I graduated from marketing as a local degree (not the top3) but my starting pay is 5k+! I’d say landing a good internship (in a bigger company) while schooling helps because I just went back to the same company after graduating last year in Jul.
Not just about the salary but also about the stress, depression and poorer mental health that comes along with most of these careers. If possible, just quit the rat race for good.

Can have expectations so they can work towards it lah.. but more importantly is after they graduated, they can get a job first, doesn't really matter how much the salary is. If their first job after graduate is not what they expected and they wouldn't want to take it, then they will be on a losing end with no job. Good luck!
As someone who used to have this mindset for my first job, I really regretted cos I was being lowballed but I thought hey, better than no job. So i took it up but now i am forever playing catch up with my peers because many future employers based off my last pay. I’ll say don’t be too picky of cos, but know your worth so you don’t get shortchanged in future!
When you think of how much junior doctors have to work compared to a person in another industry, that bump in pay isn't really worth it.

3.5k to 4.5k excluding tech industry for sure, 3.5k on the lower end and 4.5k on the higher end.
Many people dont understand that even though median salary growth is moderate, salary growth at the top end of the spectrum has increased significantly.
Even outside the traditional IB/FICC, many jobs pay fresh grads significantly better. Citi pay their corp banking grads 8k/mo, JPM pays their entire GCIB fresh grad cohort 5 figure salary (incl transaction banking). MBB pays close to 8k, oliver wyman pays close to 9k. Tech firms still pay decent salary although fresh grad hires are reduced. 6-7k expectation already very conservative assuming the students know what their end goals are.
Actually this is really the most insightful and factful comment any of these videos on fresh grads have seen so far
These 'outside' jobs may not be a good representation for the general market, as there are limited vacancies and rather competitive I would think? 😅
@@qqsera I agree that these high-paying fresh grad roles are not reflective of the average grad role and are probably limited to the top 5% of each cohort.
However i’m not saying that every fresh grad should have unrealistic expectations of achiving these kind of remuneration. My point is that we shouldn’t just label these undergrads a delusional just because they have high salary expectations. A >6k fresh grad salary is more achievable now than 10 years ago where it was limited to the 0.1% who got a IB/markets role in a buldge bracket. This was largely driven by the tech boom towards the end of the last decade where your meta/AWS/google and equiv were throwing 5 figure salaries at fresh grads. Many of the MNCs in the traditional industries (US/EU banks, strat firms, law firms) started restructuring pay at the junior levels in order to remain competitive in their bid to attract/retain talent.
@@JJ-ff7mmjust in case you missed it, big tech firms are freezing hiring and retrenching in a big way. Paying >$6k p.m. is becoming an exception rather than the norm. Things has changed drastically. We are heading into a recession and a fresh grad in 6 months time would be lucky to find a job, any job let alone get a high pay

Just graduated with a psych degree and am looking for a job but it’s quite hard 🥲 but I would say expected starting pay around 2.8 to 3k?
When you set your expectations too high, it's hard for you to accept anything you set your mind on already. My first salary was 1200.. (basically I knew nothing about my job) and over the years gained work experience and related certs and getting 10k right now. (8 years in the industry now) Aside from salary, I think getting the experience and exposure is more important.

to all those saying 6-7k is too high, just take a look at the employment graduate survey for fresh grads nus, especially for computing related majors. its just the average pay, and most of my friends (just grad last year) mostly draw a starting of 5-8k depending on the company/ sector/ job scope. its really just average

@@0rchimaru hmm im honestly not sure, no experience benchmarking, just speaking from own experience and seems to match the ges. i thought they just get the stats by mass sending emails to grads and try to entice people to fill up the form with some gift vouchers cos thats what they did for my batch lol. filled up cos i thought i cld get a voucher but nope they didnt give me anything😠my circle of friends mostly draw 5-7k and our grades/ internships/ skills are kinda average imo so yea thought the computing kids had realistic expectations. but of course this is only for computing related majors, cant say for the rest

these salaries basically can survive but to thrive you have to create/find your own opportunities. taking risks and betting on yourself when you're young is good but not so common in sg

Enough with all this degree holders. Having a degree is over hype nowadays. People do uni just for the status and can say they have a “degree cert”. When in reality even an ITE cert nitec or higher nitec can get a degree salary. Just have to find the right industry and right company. The only good thing for a degree is you can climb to management faster but goodluck doing that if youre in the government sector.
Make a video of graduates from ITE or poly that have been in the workforce and ask whats their salary range. Can easily beat this undergrads.
And alot alot of uni kids dont even pursue the industry they were studying in. Like i said its just for status.
