In African customs, a man's representative or family members goes (bearing a few gifts) to the women's family house. Its like an introduction of both families. The man's family introduces themselves and mention to the woman's family that one of their own is interested in their daughter. I'm from West Africa and it works the same. Now considering your distance you discuss it with the family and come to an understanding.
But who will Ziheng send, Erica should let him go directly, her parents already feel disrespected for finding out online so the best thing now considering how they feel is that he should go.

It is a huge continent. However, what Black Africans have in common is dowry. You can’t just marry our daughter without sacrifice! My husband ( Yoruba Nigerian) had to lie down prostrate with many male relatives in front of my father to BEG for my hand in marriage. We have traditions. Your traditional marriage is just as important as your Christian / Muslim wedding.
