As a German fan I have to say, it so totally sucked to watch games against Spain in that era, specially the 2008 and 2010 tournaments. You NEVER had a doubt in every single game, that if Spain played their regular level they were unbeatable. And I am talking about their regular level, not top level. The ball control was insane.
I have seen a lot of "historic" or "unbeatable" teams, like Milan under Sacchi, Ajax 94-96, Barca with Ronaldinho, Real Triple Champs, Brazil in the 90ties, France late 90ties and even Germany sometimes. But this Spanish squad was unique.

@@albertomoldes6143 one year won both thropys but it's a historical thing ,it's very difficult play well in la liga and in champions ,because you have very difficult team with more level ,if you go Germany have two team with only have level for win tournament and the rest of the team dont have enough level,in Spain the teams go outside to bite you ,some teams maybe couldn't win nothing ,but when are playing real Madrid or Barça can be win or draw, the only similar league in my opinion is the premier ,and this year liverpool won champions league and he's tried win premier too, how player's reached the final? Too many played injured and have very lucky that the ajax was eliminated, the champions is always very difficult win ,and if you focused in the tournament Don't ensure that you can win, maybe easy is you focused in the league and you will see how the team its develops in the tournament especially if your team play in a strong and competitive league.

They were known as underachievers pretty much everywhere else also, including Denmark where I'm from.... Even though Spain were considered the Evil Spirit during our golden generation in Euro 1984, World Cup 86.... and last game World Cup Qualification of 1994 loss - where Bakero ( known as the black sheep by us Danes) deliberately backed into Peter Schmeichel as he was about to claim an easy corner, which gave Nadal (the uncle of tennis player Nadal) a free header into an open goal. No foul given by the blind ref... (We ,Denmark, later became friends with the Barcelona captain Bakero as he acknowledged what he had done in an interview lol)
Luckily we didn't play Spain in Euro 1992 (and the united Yugoslavia had ceased to exist)... Because we won that...
Anyway..... point is, we all knew they were underachievers, especially after they pummeled the then situational world cup favorites after the group play Denmark 5-1 in 1986 Mexico.
All that being said, Denmarks Michael Laudrup was the main inspiration of all the key players from the Spain national team during their 2008 - 2012 success.

We have succeeded in getting draws against Qatar, China etc and win against Thailand respectively. In the other end, we have lost against team like Bangladesh. Xavi was always consistently brilliant. In the 2000's, only play makers and box-box midfielders were given media attention. Gerrard, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Kaka, Lampard immediately spring to mind. It was only after Luis Aragones changed Spain's playing style and Pep was appointed as Barca's head coach, deep lying play makers or the Regista were recognized as media worthy. The likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Xabi Alonso, Scholes had very few bad games in their prime and were insanely consistent. You can see this in the Ballond'or and FIFA POTY votings down the years as they are largely influenced by journalists. The early 2000's were dominated by Gerrard, Lampard, Zidane, Ronaldinho and from 2007-08 deep lying play makers started appearing on the listings more frequently and by the end of the decade people recognized the true importance of technical ability as opposed to sheer physical presence. I wish Scholes had this kind of luxury when he was shunted onto the wing to accommodate Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham into the English national team.

I don't know anyone that felt David Villa was under rated. He was great.

To be honest he got worse after he broke his leg during his Barcelona time. But before, if you asked anybody who is the best striker in the world, most people would say David Villa.

@@mionellessi3086 His fracture was terribly unlucky because at that point he really was top class and was at the top of his abilities...and when he came back he wasn't nearly the same. Still a great player but he simply wasn't up to the par to perform in a top flight team as Barcelona (or Atletico after he went there). Plus, he's a very humble and amazing guy too.

He was the most important player to win the World Cup, by far. And the most underrated striker I've personally seen.

@@mpownage4806 no, in 2008 it wasn't. In fact the 2007-2008 season (the one that ended with the 2008 Euro Cup) saw an horribly underperforming Barcelona side. They only qualified 4th in the Spanish League. It was that bad. Xavi was almost certified to be sold to Milan AC that summer after underperforming AWFULLY for three straight seasons, for instance. Guardiola's arrival prevented it (Xavi has talked about it several times over by now). Iniesta had been good but not good enough. Puyol was top class all along, but he wasn't enjoying his best form at Barcelona, etc etc etc.
Tiki-taka wasn't even a thing. The style that Guardiola used for his Barcelona (And that Del Bosque adapted for the national team) didn't exist yet. It was born in the 2008-2009 season.
2008 Euro was all due to Luis Aragones. He trusted players that had pretty awful seasons telling them they were the best, and then used them with the proper tactical scheme on the field. Results speak for themselves.
2010 WC is arguably a different thing because by that time Guardiola's Barcelona was dominating Europe with probably the best football ever seen. Del Bosque adapted that for Spain, but under a slightly different tactical lineup (double DMs, Xabi Alonso-Busquets instead of just one like in Barcelona). Spain's style of play was VASTLY different from 2008: in 2008 it was a lot more about constant movement on the pitch rather than on overwhelming possession. In 2010 Spain was a lot more static in their offense, and a lot more focused on pure posession and circulation of the ball - which was a lot more like what Barcelona was playing like at the time.
But 2008 wasn't that way. At all. Barcelona was a complete disaster that season and had been so for the previous 3 years too (since their CL win in Paris in 2006).
