when i was a dumb child. met a guy with the same real world name as my friend in real life (as his character name). i was shocked and ask "will? (dont remember name now) is that you?" "yea" "this is (my name)." "oh hey!" and we talked for a bit. couldnt believe he played d2, and what not. after 20-30 minutes we are showing each other our gear. and the scammer asked about my soj. (before runes were a thing). he wanted to see how it was on his character. 'knowing' this person in real life, i agreed. dropped. and we continued talking for a good 10 minutes. until he left. man... i went to school the next day, and confronted my friend. he had no idea what i was talking about. instantly knew, what had happened. and thats the day the internet taught me a valuable lesson.

Imagine placing 40 SOJS 1 by 1 in the trade box. Now imagine doing that 3 times because the person you're trying to trade with is having "issues" accepting. Okay, I experienced a variation on the "drop-for-drop" scam, but with a crafty twist. So a guy claimed to have Enigma. He said we could trade, but each time we tried to he claimed the trade option in his window "glitched out." He suggested we stand on either side of the wall around the Act 1 outpost. He instructed me drop my item (a rare rune) on my side, and he would drop his item (Enigma) on his side, and we would run around the wall to get each other's items. You can probably guess what happened next. As soon as I started running he picked up his Enigma, used its +1 to teleport to go through the wall, and pick up my rune. I was shocked and pissed. But it was an important life lesson.

Here's one: A5 anni/torch for item. There's a little nook below Malah to the left of the stairs. One person drops their item in that little nook, and the other player drops their item on the other side of the cliff (both players can see the other players items). The players inch closer, until they're at around the half way point at which they both go for the other player's item. But the player from the other side of the cliff turns back for his item at the last second, right after he ques his buddy to join the game and snatch the other guy's item. This one was pretty unique because the player felt totally safe, only they never accounted for someone else joining the game at the last second. And it required teamwork!

Couple more from back in the day.
    1. Anni for gold, perfect gheeds for gold, later torch for gold. Pick up the gold with telekinesis once it's dropped. Somewhat harmless because the gold isn't very valuable.
    2. Act 2 palace trade. It sounds silly, but damn was it effective. You stand outside the palace, the victim stands inside. Both drop the items, you wish to trade. Once the "go" command is given, delay a little. The person inside the palace has to go off screen for a coupe seconds, which is when you pick your item back up (without them realizing) and start running for theirs.
    3. Little difficult to execute and required a character built around it. Build a barb with full "Increased speed", equip a bunch of +all skills/+barb passive skills. Agree on a place with reasonably long distance between the drops. Once the traded items are dropped and the "go" command is given, start moving slowly. When the victim is the same distance from your item as you are, turn back and run at max speed to pick your item back up before they can get to it. Then zoom to get their item too before they can get back to it as well. I've seen it done with barbs, but I'd imagine vigor paladin might work the same

the worst of all the scams i encountered back in the days (and they did the bar trick on me and so on) was this:
i played with a dude for like 2 hours straight. good talk, pulled him a bit, we had nice chats, good diablo, baal and other farm runs - we even shared some of the dropped loot from farming. it was the day i finally got my tal's armor and i was super hyped, helped other players and just enjoyed my laquered plate and the boost it gave me.
after a decent amount of time we played together (surely 3-4 hours) we talked about gear, builds and stuff. i told him how to's on the bliz sorc when he asked, if he might check the dmg boost when wearing my tal's to see, if the item and the bonus it gives would be good for his build.
stupid me gave him the armor and while waiting for him to write sth like: 'dayum, thats super nice' i suddenly read: (...) left our world. Diablo's minions weaken.
i can still feel the panic rush and even today, 15? years later, i'd bitchslap the shit out of his face if i'd see him again!
it took a shitload of time to farm one back. since then i'm kind of paranoid when it comes to friends in game :D

I never told anyone this, but I got scammed at that first location too. But the trick was when you dropped your item it actually went through the wall onto the other side, meaning you now had to run all the way back to pick it up, where as the other person doesn't have to move at all. Just click and goodbye, your item was gone
I also remember someone trying something similar in act 4, the fireplace near Tyrael. Not as good as the act 2 Atmas one but. Also, there was once this thing people used to do which is dump a load of shitty items out the front of act 1 and try PK you. Then when you went to go grab your body you might accidently pick one of these shitty items up and when you finally collect your real body, they kill you and all your items would drop on the floor. That's how the multiple bodies patch happened

Side note, I would often get both people's anni and torch by telling them " I dont need a 20/20 torch, I need a better anni, I'll give perf torch + crap anni for an average of each. (While not having a horrid anni myself maybe a 12/19/x anni, often after your 20 stat/whatever res torches and 15+/15+ anni's, because "I needed just a few more stats and i was good on resistances")
Fist step is to delay long enough to perm game incase the guy who decided to give you free stuff rage quits.
Then say "my friends know my common game/passwords, (if they are less dense than a rock they will ask for a ng, tell them to make and find a new target, aka leave them waiting unless they rejoin your game, call that one off.) lets go act 4 incase someone joins, since its a long run from any log in point, lets trade by jamella, away from wp. (Easily 3/4 of the time people trust you more from this because it makes sense.)
You goto act 4, I make a very quick pitstop at a pre selected uncommon wp to have (since most people get rushed, uncommon wps were easy, so I drop my stuff and quickly goto act 3 town, maybe a long loading screen? I was usually still faster than most, my dad was an engineer and just finished school for computer drafting, AKA I played on a badass computer back in the day, also internet was a priority) with an oddly high success rate I run up and say you first, to see some goodies drop. Grab and quickly change characters. This is where you (the person giving stuff away) had 2 choices, run to wp and play the lotto and start spamming wps (maybe 3 attempts before I get back) or leave and hope the game poofs, hence the delay to perm game eariler (same as afking in a solo game to self xfer).
I log on new character that has said uncommon wp and grab my originals.
I laugh at your attempt to make a video about a subject you know nothing about, other than probably giving me your items on more than one occasion, you know so little its embarassing.
"I like how he disconnects, it makes it seem so legit" more or less what you said...ctrl clicking cube in a shop = exiting the game with literally no message AKA buying you more time and leaving them confused (reason for trading next to jamella)
Btw I was also 12, some just bloom sooner than others I suppose.
While someone attempted this one on me and I cant claim it as an original, I feel I improved, maybe perfected it. if I wasnt baaling, i was pking, if I wasnt pking I was scamming (only in game, jsp was always clean), but Ive watched all these videos reguarding old scams, its a damn shame none of my originals made it in here, because they made rich in game XD
God I miss the simple times.

The scammer is outside the camp, the other is inside. Scammer convinces the person inside to drop the Item that he wants duped. Now the scammer simpy teleports in the camp (yes this was possible) and picks it up quickly. The scammer usually did not use soso as it would be too obvious. I used to scam in middle school.
One was to trade for an anni or torch. I'd create a game and look for an Act 1 map that had a gate. I would put my A2 Merc on the outside, geared out with might aura (sometimes would use a pally to give fanta as well) at this point people knew all the scams and grabbing gear through walls etc. They would be super hesitant, especially if they thought I wanted to be on the outside, because I could just teleport into town. But they were more willing to attempt to scam me when I told them I want them outside. I'd get them to drop their item/or torch/anni and then all ask them a question. And as they typing I'll hostile when Merc was near them. The Merc kills them and I run out and grab the gear and leave.
Another thing I'd do to scam whole accounts was to tell the global chat that I was quitting the game and offer my free account. When someone replied, I'd ask what they wanted me to change the password to so they can have it. And there were times that the password they told me to change it to was their actual password. I'd drop all their gear in a friends game. And that was that.

In addition to the "nk17" scam there was actually a much easier way to "corpse pop" someone, which is basically what you're doing in a roundabout way. The way I saw corpse pops happen most often is someone would kill you in a duel, then while you were running back to your corpse they throw a bunch of random items on your body. When you went to click on your body you would equip any item you clicked on and then you would click your corpse. If you picked up say a gray short sword all your gear except your weapon would be equipped. Then you just kill the poor SOB and all equipped items would drop, which was most of their gear.

Oh man you forgot the best one.
Convince someone that you're giving up diablo for awhile and you need someone to hold onto your gear because you won't have time to keep logging in to keep your account active. Tell them that you don't have any other friends and that they can hold onto your gear for you but only if they earn your trust first. Go outside of town and position yourself far down the wall. Have the other person in town on the other side of the wall and then drop most of your gear on the ground showing them that you "trust" them (knowing your gear is perfectly safe because you can't teleport over that wall from inside town).
After a few seconds, pick your gear back up and switch sides with the person so that now you are in town and the wall is separating you again. Tell them to drop some of their gear and after their turn they will have earned your trust and they can pick it back up. After they remove their gear hostile them and watch your carefully positioned mercenary one-shot them while you are in town and your merc is out there with them (you dropping your gear first was just a distraction to get your merc outside).
Now that they are dead, you will easily be able to outrun them to their gear outside of town and pick it up for yourself.

This is where my brother screws up, he gives the guy HIS PASSWORD to his current account, i guess it would be convenient right?
the guy logs out, and into my brothers account, and my brother is logged out, trying to log into the new account he is going to receive

  • @-Keith-
    @-Keith- 3 года назад

There was a better variant of the pvp corpse popping scam that was more reliable. The idea was to drop a bunch of trash items on top of a hostile player's corpse after killing them. In order to get their body back, they'd have to pick up the items first. But if their inventory became too full to pick up all their gear, they'd only be able to equip some of the items from their corpse and the body would remain on the ground.
At that point you'd kill them again, and whatever items were equipped at the time would drop to the ground. So if you wanted their weapon, you'd drop a bunch of armor on their body. If you wanted their armor, you'd drop a bunch of weapons on the ground. If the victim wasn't holding alt to check for items on top of their body as they ran back to grab their corpse, there was a good chance you'd be able to pop them.

One has been mentioned a couple times below, which was there was a drop hack program that I was tricked into running which resized my game window, opened my inventory, dead reckoning dragged all of my worn items out of my inventory, dropped them on the ground, and exited the game. I do not even know why someone bothered to scam me with this as my gear was pretty much complete trash. Easy lesson learned. The other scam used to be in Act 2. You would drop an item and someone else would drop an item near the edge of town, but then they would teleport into town right on top of you and steal your item. I can't remember losing anything significant as I never had anything significant to lose. All my godly items I had were handed to me by hackers or people who bought their gear.

Back then you couldn’t put your torches in trade. So you had to trust people had the torch they said they had. Everyone wanted sorc or paladin torches so we would drop trade at the small wall near Akara. Everyone would scam each other.

My brother used to run a scam in D2 back in the day. He would fully hi-jack peoples accounts. He must have been 10 years old. He would join a server and ask people what there dungeon rank was. Most people did not know what this was so he would advise them if you log into the DnD system it would tell you your dungeon rank. "just type /DnD username password" while he continued the conversation to try and help them trouble shoot why they weren't logging in the DND(do not disturb) notification would tell him there message which was there username and password. Then he would logout, login as them which would disconnect them and change there password.

Regarding wanting to move items between characters. Back in the day, if you didn’t have friends online, you’d have to drop your items in a opened game. Of course you wouldn’t want everybody to leave the game, thus closing the game and you would lose everything. Therefore, ppl would join popular, easily identifiable games like “drop and leave.” Sometimes people would gear up the assassin with all speed increasing items. They would max out the skill that increases the speed (forget name). You would join and go to an act town that you could hide items in. Usually act 2, on an outer dock. You would leave and come back with the other character. The assassin would see what act you go to by hovering the way point. Then they would catch up to you, out speed you, and get to your gear. Happened once. Around 2002. Lost a 250 psn small charm. Will never forget. Character’s name was Of mice and men.

dont recall what it was but you get the guy to put the item in the trade window to get them to think you could duplicate it, and you had them type in 3 long lines of code after you type it - basically, once they did the last one it made the game hit the check mark to trade, so you could accept it. then they timed out, so once they timed out, your buddy joins the game, you give them the item and then you never have to return to that account again. fun times back then

Someone got me with the good ole "hit shift + F4" saying it would dupe the items I drop on the ground. Someone also definitely got me with the quick item swap.

Got scammed only one time. So I needed a low torch. Since you couldn't trade it through the trade window we agreed to use this going-around-some-random-wall method. It was a crappy necro torch or something with a very low value and this guy said he will trade it for like 5-800k gold. It was pretty obvious like... who the hell would trade a torch for gold? But it was a cheap torch and I was like well, I'm almost sure I will get scammed, but I don't know how and it's just some gold, so I dropped it on the floor. What I did not know is you can simply pick up gold with telekinesis even in town. He even used a barb or something and used some item with telekinesis charges. I wasn't even mad.

Used to spend most of my time in Act 1 PvP games. My favorite thing to do to unsuspecting players was to fight them and kill them, then throw a ton of random items on the ground around their corpse. When they would come back to their corpse they would accidentally panic click and pick up a couple of the items and then finally click their corpse. But since the items would go on their player when they picked up their corpse their gear would go into their inventory and fill it up, thus leaving their old corpse on the ground.
Once they did that if you killed them again, everything they were carrying would drop on the ground because you were not allowed to have two corpses with loot on them. Got lots and lots of high end loot over the years with that method.

I remember at one point early on when you died in pvp people would throw down trash items around your corpse so you would accidentally pick one up and auto equip it, this would keep one item on your original corpse and if they killed you before you fixed it and got all your gear back, your entire set of gear popped onto the ground. I also remember an infamous bug where people could simply open a town portal and throw an oil potion through it and it would crash either your game or the server.. I think it had to happen on your screen to get you, at least at one point. I vividly remember naked barbarians in particular just camping the town entrance with a town portal and an oil potion in their hand, just waiting for someone to come close enough.. rarely they would get killed before they succeeded and then a battle of camping the town entrance would begin again in a different way.. if the naked barb could get out there to throw a potion again or not.. I remember one time the barb trying to crash the server got camped at the entrance by a frozen orb sorceress so the barb took the wp to the cold plains and tried to long distance crash them from behind. It was a hellish game in the early days.

There's a scam where (if I was the scammer) i'd partyup to allow seeing where i was in the map, go far far away, then: 1. Drop the item you want to dupe 2. hit Alt+F1, then F2 and so on till F10. Alt F4 would close the program and it would let you go grab the item.

I recall being told that I could dupe items if I visted a website. Instructed to put all my items on my character, go to the website. Click on the website link with Diablo 2 open. It would run a script I guess which threw all my items on the floor, exited the game and back to desktop.
Glad it was with Assassin build rather than my bank account, much wiser these days.
Thanks Diablo 2 for prepping me for life *thumbs up*

Lost my lv 94 pally to a scam. This was in HC in a trade game. Player traded me near exit of town in act 1. While in the trade window another player joined, hostiled, and killed me before I even knew what happened.

The best scam was the dnd rank scam. /dnd put up an away message when people whispered you. So you'd tell the victim to type /dnd then their account name and password to get their "did not die" ranking, whisper them to get their account name and password, then log into their account and take every item they had. Nothing like phishing people as an 11 year old in 2003.

I got scammed once for a Buriza. It was a stupid scam, and I'm not sure how I fell for it. It was basically multiple players (friends of scammer) confirming that the scammer could dupe items. It was like 17-18 years ago so I can't remember the specifics but somehow they showed 2 of the exact same items with the same stats to me and at least 2 people showed me that which made me believe that the scammer could actually dupe the item lol.

I got scammed by the rattle cage swap. I also got scammed by an amazon that had an amulet with teleport charges before I knew that was a thing. The only person I ever scammed was someone who I knew was a scammer, not that it makes it right, but that was my rationale.

Your first scam, you just had people fill their inventory with potions, then say if you die in pvp and disconnect and reconnect really fast, it would cause lag with the server, and wouldn't save your character, so it should dupe. This was in the era where everyone was duping SOJs. Pick up their items and leave before they reconnect. This is how I got scammed, but I was also 10 years old and all they got off me were shitty yellows. But I learned fast that nobody tells you the truth online. :P

There was a scam to join guilds where you go to a certain page and click the link and it causes you to drop all your gear and disconnect you while your in a game. I was so wealthy from this scam.
