Excellent video. Worked exactly as shown. It was a bit tricky taking the plastic cover off after removing the screws. Start at the back on the ends of the hinges with a small screw driver or knife and work from that end. After it was started it was easy. Wear a grounding bracelet as in the video. Putting it back together was also very easy. Thanks very much.
Glad it all worked out!
Darn good video no irritating music and fast forward stuff. Keep up the good work.
Thanks lol
I have the same notebook, i'll upgrade it like you did. Very informative and nice video, thank you.
Update: I purchased 16 GB 2400 MHz sodimm(Kingston) DDR4 and installed. Worked flawlessly. When i upgraded to 20 GB, total memory for VGA increased to 10gb (2+8 shared). Now using Unity is way more snappier. Thank you again.
awesome glad to hear you were able to upgrade!
is your an AMD R5 or intel ideapad s145, because i want to increase for greater usage with HDRP unity

Would you recommend this upgrade or just buying a new laptop? I have the same laptop as this, it is very slow.
@@oveyo8254 I think you can easily decide with monitoring your ram while you're using the most demanding programs. Mine was not enough so this upgrade really solved my problem. If you're not gaming on your laptop, I think it'll be enough. For example, now mine using up to 14 GB ram while on heavy load.
Looks so easy. Thank you. Will upgrade my Lenovo laptop just the same as this in the video.
Good luck with the upgrade. I still use the laptop every week for work. Surprisingly it has held up well. I still haven’t upgraded to windows 11 yet though
Thanks for your video!!
Nice and easy, thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I feel better about doing it myself.
Good luck! Also everyone recommends disconnecting battery first.
@@whattmeter Hey can I get an Amazon link to the laptop
@@whattmeter did you disconnect the battery in the video?
Lol my plastic links snapped, worth it, much better and faster performance. Just add 8gb and it should already be good. Thanks for showing us the tutorial, cheers.
oh sorry to hear that. darn those plastic links.
Thanks for this video. Successfully did this. I'd recommend anyone do this if you need more performance.
I only had 4gb ram, and running basic stuff was laggy.

I have the same computer model I put a memory am of 16 gb but now I slow the boot I stay with 20 gb in total.
although I came with 4 gb ofmemoria ram I did not find a second nooso of ram that I can do, thank you very much
Interesting, HWI reports that i also have LNVNB161216 MB ( but in Yoga Duet 7-13IML05 - Type 82AS) .
However power-shell reports max Capacity of 16 777 216 and single memory slot.
I'm confused whether it's up-gradable or not. 16gb is not enough for me. 32gb would best but even 20gb would help.
Any idea whether it's possible ?
My son is using the same laptop series and he only has 2gb ram in it, that's what came with the laptop he was looking if he can upgrade it then he found this video thanks
But i would lime to know if he could buy a 16gb ram and then install it?
Its a ddr4 type
the CPU may not support this amount of RAM

Hey man, great tutorial.. straight to the point! I have the same laptop but on Lenovo's website they say the max ram capacity is 12gb, does that mean the 16gb stick will cause problems in future?
I’ve been using it for work long hours. Never had any issues yet. I could be wrong but it could be the same like dell where they have recommended ram which was when they designed the laptop. Then when the bios gets updated they allow more ram. If they really wanted to prevent more than 12gb they could control it with the bios update. It’s kinda like how some laptops can only run 2400mhz ram. Even if you put a ram with 2666mhz, it only runs it at 2400mhz because they capped it. Just my opinion though. Issue is this laptop has no dedicated gpu memory so it relies a lot on the ram
Oh yeah i would double check to make sure the cpu you have can handle the upgrade or run crucial scanner to double check if the ram upgrade is possible
So I have the Ryzen 5 3500u version with the Vega 8 integrated graphics..and yeah it takes up a lot of ram!
On Crucial website it says that the laptop can support 20GB ram but on Lenovo's Forums people are saying do not exceed the maximum 12 gigs... I want to upgrade soon and I'm confused between the 12 and 20 gigs. How do I check if it's safe to upgrade to 20 tho?
If you are having doubts just play it safe. That ryzen 5 can handle it but if other people are saying they have issues with 20gb probably best to play it safe. I wonder if those having issues updated their bios. But in my opinion, best to play it safe and stick to the official lenovo website recommendations especially if you still have a warranty. The ryzen 5 with vega 8 integrated graphics! Very nice! Maybe there’s an incompatibility issue with this cpu, the 4gb ram integrated then the dim slot. The ryzen gets an increased performance boost with dual channel but maybe since it’s a different setup there’s some issue
@@whattmeter From what I can tell, the max gb upgrade is based on what model of Lenovo Ideapad S145, there are SEVERAL versions with different Chips, so I think if you have the Intel chip you can upgrade to 20Gb but if you have AMD like me, 12Gb may be the max.
Did you try to upgrade the radio card? I didnt found any information about LNVNB161216 motherboard if is compartible with WiFi 6 / Bluetooth 5.0 card.

Can I use this ram for my Lenovo laptop ideapad
I have a lenovo ideapad l340 gaming, have the same motherboard, this motherboard only holds ram with 2400mhz ?
$60? Pretty good price! For a total of 20GB, not bad! Have the AMD A6 S145, but needs the DC jack replaced or maybe get the broken tip of the plug out! Opened mine up to take some m/b pics, has the 1TB WD Blue HDD, & 4GB RAM card. Have you upgraded win 10 home to pro on the Lenovo?🤔 Thanks for the great video! Can your models CPU be upgraded?
I swear this motherboard is majesty !! Up to 7th gen Intel or AMD A6, Nvidia MX110 with 4GB VRAM and With all this free 4PCIe lanes for nvme or eGPU - man this is a beast !!
It’s even cheaper
I did increased from 4 to 8 gigs and I should say it didn't helped to desktop windows programs execution at all
Tho it helped a lot to the native Android apps and Linux system to work much better
Can you, thru m/b or other settings, allocate a little more RAM to the GPU? Thanks. Have the S145, but the soldered in place RAM isn't beside the changeable RAM, but it might be on the other side of the m/b
Is the iGPU memory is allocated dynamically and automatically like after 2016 in all the machines?

I would go 8gb ram if possible (8gb+4gb). You can check cpuz to see if it runs dual channel. There’s a noticeable difference in performance in my opinion running 12gb total vs 8gb
@@whattmeter is there any way for me to see if my soldered inter grated 4G RAM is 2666 or 2400 i cannot see its specifications due to it being integrated and i cannot remove it ... will it make a difference if the two are not the same ?

or will it affect anything interms of improvements or issues
with intel i3, I wouldn't go past an 8gb ram stick (12gb ram total). I've been using 16gb ram stick on this i7 as my daily driver and i haven't had any issues at all. I'm typing this comment on this laptop right now. I use it for mostly work stuff and light editing. Just my opinion though.

i have the same laptop planning to upgrade the ram its only 4gb so i need to just buy ram and just plug n play? cuz the motherboard has a non removable 4gb?
Yes! If it’s the same model the 4gb is built in. There’s only one ram slot ln this laptop. It should be plug and play. People also recommended disconnecting the battery before installing new ram, which I didn’t show in this video. Make sure you check the speed of the ram as well. The one in the video was 2400mhz so I would double check to make sure the laptop supports the speed you are buying

I have the same motherboard than you, the LNVNB161216 in an ideapad s145-15api (ryzen 7 3700u version) do you think it will work with 20Gb of ram? On most of the website it says 20Gb max supported, but 12 on the lenovo website
Also i use Linux, so the "Open cmd as admin > type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity > convert kilobytes to gigabytes to find out max ram capacity" trick won't work for me

I would run crucial scanner to see how much ram is compatible. usually 12gb of ram is more than enough, unless you are trying to run some extensive games/ multi tasking. Hello sir i have the same laptop and i wanted to upgrade the ram but i don't know what is compatible or not. Does ram on pc works in the same laptop you're using in the tutorial?
It depends on motherboard
But actually saying, any SODIMM DDR4 stick up to 16GB will work 100% with no issues
like that's how it works now
Awesome tutorial. For some reason my computer isn’t showing the soldered ram. Any idea how to fix it?
oh really? same model? did you check task manager > performance > memory (it should be 20gb on the top right corner)
Yeah same model. I’ve checked and opened up the computer. My computer shows I only have 4gb total. with the 4gb being in the slot. I tried removing the stick to see if it was registering the soldered ram rather than the removable stick and it wouldn’t boot.
That is odd? Is it showing slot 1 of 2 in the task manager? Or slot 2 0f 2
@@whattmeter it shows slot 1 of 1 so I guess I only have the one slot. I think I read somewhere that the soldered ram is optional but I can’t find where I read it now.
Ohhh never seen one like that. I wonder if it’s a different motherboard model
can u tell whats the great ram for the s145 ? it s 8 or 16?
Depends on your cpu. This pc had an i7 8th gen so I know it could handle 16gb no problem. Been using it daily for work with no issues. If the cpu is an i3 or ryzen 3 I wouldnt go past the recommended 12gb ram max but thats just my opinion
is it absolutely crucial that the mghz of the new ram match the old one?
Yes, otherwise the higher frequency one will start working at the lower frequency of the other stick, and sometimes it won't even work
@@theheavygamer430 there the modes that ram stick support
If there's no a single one in the singular intersection (meaning the fastest mode should be either the same for the sticks, or the better one also capable of the fastest of the worse stick .)

More ram increases responsiveness. Also helps multi tasking applications. If you are referring to faster boot time most likely an ssd upgrade would be more noticeable

I guess I can answer your question
Your laptop's capacity on how much RAM does it support depends on mostly the CPU your laptop are using. Since your laptop is using the Intel Core I5-8265U (1.6 GHz), it can handle around 32 GB of RAM at max.
I hope this helps and correct me if I'm wrong.

It was instant. I did match the speed of the current ram of 2400 mhz so I wouldn’t have to change the xmp profile. I don’t know if this laptop has a locked bios.
