Sounds like Chrises personal life and conflicts of interest are the reasons he's really taking off. Sounds like the government with snatch him with that air force contract.
I am not too concerned. If you look at the patents coming out of ionq, many of the researchers from his University lab are working at ionq. So despite Chris leaving there is going to be knowledge transfer. I think it is also overlooked that these accomplished researchers like Chris are relying on the their students to perform the research and become the subject matter expert. As long as ionq maintains the funding, I believe that ionq and the university lab will foster a collaboration to continue overcoming new challenges.
