Hero to the Beatles when they were just teenagers, especially John Lennon, who adored him! Just had to check this one out guys! Can't wait to watch your program!
Nice! Chuck Berry was joking around more than usual there because he was lip syncing the song. If you look closely you'll see his guitar was not plugged in. The man who introduced him at the beginning was Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, a television show that brought rock 'n' roll to teenagers in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Berry name drops the show in the song and the crowd cheers when he does. The age of legal adulthood in the US is also 18. So the song is about a 16 year old girl posing as older so she can go dancing at night. Berry also drops the names of several regions and places in the United States into the song and that made is easy for The Beach Boys to turn it into "Surfin' USA" five years later. Berry sued them for copyright infringement and they added his name to the songwriting credits for that hit.
The connection to Surfin’ USA and the lawsuit is such an interesting piece of rock history-Berry’s influence is undeniable. Thanks for sharing this gem!
The godfather of Rock And Roll. What an entertainer. He was also famous for his "duckwalk"
He sure was, huge influence on Beatles and rolling stones....and me, too!
