  • We recently sat down with the lovely Zoe Kazan, lead actress and screenwriter from RUBY SPARKS, and chewed the fat about how the idea for the film came to her, writing for herself (and boyfriend/leading man Paul Dano) and the film industry's fascination with the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" trope (people, DO NOT call her a "Manic Pixie Dream Girl").

You can tell that Zoe Kazan is intelligent, and has a strong sense of style; though I do think she should learn to be less sensitive and defensive about criticism, because criticism simply is not worth the negative energy many people spend attacking it.

In a nutshell movie's points were:
1)honey moon period does not last, butterflies will fade regardless how perfect your partner is
2)you are guaranteed to not like some part of your partner as well as your partner ain't gonna like some things of your personality regardless how strong your love is

And about " Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG)" idk. Like the first time i watched it- i was little (4 years ago wow, man ur in ur 20s now but whatever) i really didn't think much of it other than it being a comedy but had a nice ending after getting into a haywire-such it is in life.
But now i realize it was so much more (i mean it always was but ya) than just that, it changed my preceptive then and it did again now with more clarity.
Now, I mean really if you put Manic Pixie Dream Girl as a TYPE of character (that's being sexist) it would really defeat and to a degree disrespect the creator's intention. Sure MPDG can be used as a tool and stay just that, but what and how you end up using would really define the movie and affectively change the term MPDG- its versatile and even though it maybe sexist to a point but it should never be hold back just caz it could end up labeling the movie itself. That's just the critics being critics- its so true now in 2020 than it was in 2012 (i watched it in 2016).
MPDG- idc but this really is the reality of most (back then but i still think it holds) men and women and Zoe being Zoe snaps to wake you up from it. You can be in ur 20s like me or in ur late 30s or even 40s- its better late then never.

Too intellectual??? Umm well contrary to popular belief, any worthwhile artistic pursuit (film, literature, music etc.) requires a great deal of thought, both creative AND intellectual.
Just because someone is an artist (in whatever artistic medium) does not mean they should not have a vocabulary appropriate for their discipline and area of work.

"artistic pursuit (film, literature, music etc.) requires a great deal of thought, both creative AND intellectual"i agree i'm not saying it doesn't art isn't about intuellect .it is about knowledge (different thing). She belongs in a psychiatry office not and art studio true artist talk from there heart. Not their head :/

i like alot of a indie films today and actors one thing that turns me off is there too intuellectual .They speak of there work like a physician speaks of human anatomy then they place the tag of artist on there chest.

When the video first started playing I got confused and thought I was watching an amateur porn casting couch video.
