I worked there for a year in 1974 building the Airport. It helped my Kiswahili. One of the waiters in the Hotel Zanzibar would would slap me up the back of my head if my grammar was wrong. I called him "Mwalimu." It was the the best of times. I was the only Mzungu wearing shorts in the town. Visitors had to wear a Kikoi or long trousers. You could wear shorts if you were working. I was supervising a slip way into the harbour for The Mowlem Construction Company. Tourists that came by seeing me asked why are you allowed shorts and all I said was "Because I am Scottish!" Livingston landed at the same place many years before. It was a wonderful time and the people were the most honest on earth.

I would rather have this kind of life rather than the fast paced western life. i have worked at madagascar tamatave for a mining firm. the place is such a wonder, people may not have the best in life but happy and contented which is a typical attributes mostly of asian and african countries.
It may look like an idealic tropical paradise but the downside being you will be harassed by "beach boys" every day offering everything from beach tat to drugs and sex! It gets very tedious when all you want is pleasant stroll along the beach...literally ruins your holiday!°
