Thanks for that bit of history on the Cherokee Tan pumpkins! I'm part Cherokee Indian from North Carolina. Traced my ancestry years ago to find that my grandfathers people claimed to be FARMERS on the census to get out of being sent to the Oklahoma Cherokee Nation. By doing this, they relinquished their Cherokee heritage but were saved from the Trail of Tears journey. It is disappointing not to be able to LEGALLY claim my Cherokee heritage but in my heart I know that I am and that is all that matters to me. My Cherokee Tan pumpkins have gone slap crazy and have taken over the woodline by my garden area. They are growing up the trees, all over brush piles but have also crept up into my garden area to the point I can't get to several of my raised beds without stepping all over vines. I know one vine is over 200 ft long and is almost up to my pots of tomatoes & bell peppers up by my greenhouse. People are amazed at how this pumpkin vine has taken over, almost like kudzu!! I have seen several of the round balls with blooms so I know I will have pumpkins, if I can follow all the vines in the woods to harvest them. LOL!! I planted 4 seeds and they all sprouted and made vines so I am hoping to be very blessed with a nice pumpkin harvest. QUESTION: How would you save the seeds to plant for next year? Do you let one get really ripe and harvest those seeds or can you save the seeds from any of the pumpkins? I'm not wanting to sell them but have plenty for next year and to give to family.
I have a video on saving the seeds. I will have to go put it in the cards in this video. Thanks for the reminder. Check back in a while for the videos.

Both got their seed stock from us, so you will know they are from the original Cherokee seeds we received.
I bought your seed last year and planted. These are AMAZING! They really need room so that’s what I gave em and they’re gorgeous and growing pumpkins like crazy. Next year they will get planted in my food forest under every tree and in numerous compost piles and I can’t wait to see them GO! Thank you so very much for spreading such goodness to us out here, we do living history and know the importance of keeping these alive and the knowledge going onward to our children.
Thank you so much for your help. My dad is EBCI and we're trying hard to regrow some of our seeds. I will be growing these for the first time next year and am trying to learn as much as I can.
Thanks for the information about Cherokee Tan Pumpkins. I believe the Indian were much smarter then we are today. I'm sure there are plenty more lessons to be learned from them.
Hubs is so thrilled to learn that the pumpkins in our front yard came from our friends at Deep South Homestead! They are flourishing. Thank you so much for this video, because I had no idea about where to cut the stem -- really useful info!
Nothing like waking early in the morning and going out to the pumpkin garden to see the eastern sun illuminating those Cherokee Tan bright green leaves gently swaying in the breeze. Satisfaction! Thanks for the pumpkin seeds! North Texas here, close to Oklahoma!
I’m so thankful for this video, it’s very informational. Seminole pumpkins are very popular here in north Florida. going to plant both Cherokee Tan (purchased from Hoss) and Seminole pumpkins this coming spring.
Thank you for the History of the Cherokee Tan Pumpkin, I got my order of 2 packets of see and plan on planting 5 - 7 of them next year... maybe at the tree line and see how they grow there. We bought 13 acers and are putting in a 1 acre garden 1 acre orchard 1/2 acre of herbs both culinary and medicinal. Lots of different berry vines and bushes, Pecan and Almonds will go in a sunk-in greenhouse, Walnuts and Hazel nut trees too.
Thank for showing this video. I bought some from Hoss. I planted them in a 7 foot long raised bed! So far I have had like 10 male blooms and only 1 female. I hand pollinated her with 4 male blooms. I am what you would say, "putting all my pumpkins in one basket". Lol.
@@DeepSouthHomestead I’m glad to hear that! purchased some for my north Florida spring garden. thank you for preserving this really cool pumpkin variety.

Hi Mr Danny, I purchased the Cherokee tan pumpkin seeds from you and Mrs Wanda. Oh my by November my husband had to go out there and harvest them as I had emergency back fusion , then ended up 5 weeks later my incision opened wide open and had 104.7 fever - I caught SEPSIS from the material ( rods, screws etc the orthopedic surgeon put in my back , plus he didnt use stiches or staples - my in home nurse even said it didnt look right ) A long story sir and Mrs Wanda. But ive been very ill since being off the IV antibiotic Rocephin i had to take in my vein daily for 6 weeks . So ive missed much of your great content the past few months . But wanted to tell you We still have some Cherokee tan pumpkins from Nov 2022 and its May 4th 2023 We ended up getting 22 pumpkins from me planting 6 seeds . My husband is gonna plant some more this weekend . We havent been able to have the huge Garden we had in past years & especially the 2 years before my injury . Im looking back on other ways to cook them and this content came up . God bless you & Mrs Wanda. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤ Mrs josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas ❤❤❤
Thank you for showing us the whole vine Danny. Mine tried to come back after the grasshoppers got them a few weeks ago so I can tell they are very hardy but there isn’t time for them to produce anything this year. So I got more seeds from you and will try again next year. Loved hearing about the history. I’m really praying I can grow these successfully and want to have a area in my garden dedicated to my Cherokee great grandparents. I think I found my great great grandfather on the Dawes list a few weeks ago. They were in Oklahoma and my great grandmother lived in Joplin MO after she grew up and got married. The records only go back as far as her father and his siblings and parents. Wish I could find out more but for now I will try and grow the Trail of Tears, the Cherokee Tans and the Danny Corn together. Looking very forward to that coming to life next year.
I was hoping for a dedicated video on Cherokee Tan Pumpkin. Got my seeds from you. Early on when the vines were less than 10 ft I picked them up to cut the grass underneath, I didn’t know about the roots along the vine and they stopped blooming for 2-3 weeks, thought I ruined the plant. I didn’t disturb them again and they finally started to produce flowers again. There are at least 4 pumpkins so far. Thank You.
I've had problems with my squash and zucchini. The pumpkins are just now starting to run and flower. Keeping fingers crossed that I get some Cherokee Tan Pumpkins! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Danny. I ordered my seeds first of the year. I handed out many plants to my community explaining the history. People were very interested and excited to plant this pumpkin. I planted three plants. Not quite sure when I should harvest them. Can you do a follow up video of when you harvest, it would really help out this first time gardener. Thanks again.
We have a playlist that I included in the cards which is a little i in the right top corner of the video. Click it and a drop down box shows you the extra videos.
I purchased some of these seeds from you on Etsy! I am so glad to have these 🙂 my boys are learning to garden with me this past year. I've learned SO much from your channel. ♥️
I love pumpkins. I think they are my favorite plant. Mine is growing everywhere too. 2 vines in our locust tree and heading down a hill to the train tracks another is heading towards our neighbors house. 😆 lol They're so darn cute!
Thanks Danny & Wanda! I planted some pumpkins earlier and was wondering why some looked wilted. Relieved to know they were just male blooms hadn't been bloomed yet. I'm gonna plant some of your seeds from Etsy soon!
I was so excited about my pumpkins this year but our weather and pest pressure were not on our side. We got 1 Cherokee Tan pumpkin, one Long Island Cheese Pumpkin and 4 Butternut squash before a storm took out the vines. I will just try again next year
My great grandma was from North Carolina and she was half Cherokee and and half English... My grandma told me that she could ‘drink the men under the table’, lol! I didn’t ask about the history of her family and I regret that. My grandmother did tell me that she married at age 13 so she would have enough food to eat and I thought that was very sad.
Thanks guys for making this mine haven’t got a flower yet I don’t know if I will get any at all in mine but there spreading all over and now it is getting into the 40’s at night! I doubt I will get any in Northeastern Michigan
Worms got to my Cherokee Tan pumpkins. Only got a 1/3 of what was produced. I was so mad...this is my first year gardening, but I'm working on my 3rd garden and building a hoophouse 32 x 16. Persistence!
In my small garden I plant chives, different varieties of onions, leeks, marigolds and onion chives. A lot of little bugs do not like these, neither do the rabbits. You can add garlic to that list. You can plant the root portions of green onions, they too come back in the spring. If you get tiny onions to plant at the nursery, they also are said to overwinter. Might look a little dry by now, so you might get a good deal. You can always mulch plants a little, before it gets mighty cold. Plant garlic cloves root side down, a thump deep and a handspan apart, around the time when frost starts happening. They develop a root system over the winter, that's the best way to do it. Or right away in the earliest spring if you missed that opportunity. ❤ Happy gardening to all, everyone and everywhere. ❤ Even with a few occasional challenges, or setbacks.
If the bugs are getting in from the bottom I've put a small board or paving brick under them. Get them off the ground. I have problems with the grubs chewing into the bottoms of my squash. I also run my squashes up fencing. Those cattle panels tend to really hold the weight for me but I only grow smaller squash like honey nut and buttercup and after seeing the ones Danny is growing would be good on a fence.
Thank you for sharing this with us! I planted some North Georgia Candy Roaster squashes this year which is another heirloom type from the Cherokee nation. They did great and lived up to their name, delicious and sweet. Lord willing, I will try growing this Cherokee Tan pumpkins next year if I can find a couple of seeds.
The storage ability of these is unbelievable! I still have some harvested last September! So glad we got some seeds from you last year! Do you happen to know the scientific name for them? We grow several winter squashes and want to be sure they can't cross pollinate so I can keep the line pure. We're in far NE GA, so our seeds have almost made it back home :)
@@DeepSouthHomestead thank you! That's great - managed to grow 4 winter squashes last year, all different enough genetically not to cross then. They store for me a good 8 months or so. Great baked solo and wonderful made into pie. Our local farm2table chef loves them.
I planted Seminole pumpkins for the first time this year/ They act just like the Cherokee Tans. One plant has taken over a 40 sq. ft. area and has at least 10 good sized pumpkins. The dogs have walked all over the plant and it just keeps going. Haven't eaten one yet.
If you have enough to share, I would buy some , I live in the Choctaw Nation in Okla po box 715 Antlers ok. We actually live in Snow ok. My wife is Choctaw. Let me know and will keep in touch. Johnny Mccracken. Thanks my friend.
I planted some here in NC in the spring that I got from y'all, they are growing, one is doing the best out of the about 6 I have planted. Here in the middle of September and they're just now flowering what I'm thinking is the female flowers. So I'm not sure that I'll get any this year. I don't know if I need to start them earlier next year or what but we will see how they do
Im gonna HAVE TO PLANTS SOME as landscaping..lol. if i had a hill i sure would do that...we got squash bugs sooo bad only types that root might survive...
I'd like to get some of these seeds, but seems as your etsy shop keeps selling out! My daddy died 2 years ago at age 91. Grateful that he put me on the Dawe's. I want to continue to honor my heritage.
@@sandradelvecchio6894 I'm in West Virginia but mine did not sprout till the 5th of July. Just starting to see the female flowers so might not happen. For the first time in 4-5 years the figs have ripened however.
In way up in Michigan and one of my squash vines just two weeks ago got excited and put on 5 new squashes. They quite big already and I'm hoping for a long warm fall since it's in a somewhat sheltered spot I've already decided to cover with frost cloth if it's only one or 2 cool nights in the hopes of stretching my season. I might try these Cherokee tans as I've got Cherokee Trail of Tears pole beans and they are the best dry bean I grow they can be eaten as green but I have others that I like better for green beans so I just let them go for dry beans.
@@rodneysnextchapter615 the dry beans look like black kidney beans but a bit smaller and they cook up a deep brown. We use them for chili beans and in the mixed bean soup. The plants are beautiful too. The bean pods turn a rich ruby red as they age. They are good for greenbeans but i like the rattlesnakes pole beans a bit better flavor wise so the Trail of Tears end up for dry beans. I only grew out about 10 vines this year to refresh my seed stock as I had quite a few left from last year and needed to refresh several other pole bean seeds. Im kinda a seed hoarder! 🤫 I have the Anasazi beans out there too. But one of my other soup bean favorites just didn't grow this year so I'll have to see if I can find more stock. The Speckled Cranberry pole bean makes wonderful fat creamy beans i hadnt grown it in years due to losing the seeds. I might try planting out all the rest of the seex left and cross fingers next year. The worst thing is running out of garden space.
Going to try some of your Cherokee Tan seeds this year. I want to save some seeds from this crop for next year, but I want to be sure to keep them pure. I understand that Cherokee Tans and butternut squash are related closely enough to cross-pollinate. How far apart do they need to be to prevent cross-pollination?
We planted a garden for the first time this spring. My first planting of summer squash did well. But in July I planted a second round of summer squash and a first planting of winter squash including pumpkins, cushaw, butternut, spaghetti and acorn squash. And also Hubbard squash. Then came the powdery mildew and squash vine borers. I lost all of the plants. The borers were even in the blossoms and fruit. Please tell me what I can do to prevent another infestation.
Thanks for the video. I hope you can answer a question I have. Do you know why a pumpkin plants female flowers will bloom but the male flowers stay closed? This is what my plant is doing right now. 😩
Ok im convinced the long thing that was supposed to be a squash called aomething like " trombone" squash seeds are actually these...or seminole. ..im saving one for seeds...but its a pretty plant and does produce a lot of fruit...but it isnt long by any imagination. Swash vine borers which i have a lot of...dont bother it at all. So.strange to get this instead of what i ordered as the packet even had a picture of that trombone squash on it! And all i get is round small green things...
This is most likely a cucurbit mochata may not be spelled just right. As long as the other squash don't have that genus name they won't cross pollinate.
Would Cherokee Tan Pumpkins do ok on trellises or does it need to have those roots going in the ground in order to continue producing? Loved the video!
There are videos out there where some of our YT channel friends have planted them on trellises and have grown a lot of them. I have a playlist called Cherokee Tan vs Seminole Collab
Awesome information that I needed. Thank you so much! Can you also comment on how to keep the plants true to seed as I want to keep them pure to add to my other Cherokee seeds garden but I don’t know how far to space them from other pumpkins and would that apply to all other pumpkin seeds and also cucumber seeds. How do they taste and how do you use them?
How can I get some of your seats for the Cherokee tan pumpkin. I love the things that you grow I try to plan and grow a pumpkin called the naked Punkin it has green pumpkin seeds inside of it and you don’t have to peel you just tossed them and eat them they don’t seem to grow in Farmington New Mexico they make up beautiful but that’s it Iuse cow manure and chicken I water it keep iand keep damp and full sun

Hello, I checked your Etsy shop and seems there isn’t an option to purchase the Cherokee tan pumpkin seeds. Do you still sell the seeds? And if so how can I purchase them? Thank you
So they take some shade? I assume they are mold resistant? Do they taste like regular squash? Would like to see more videos as the come along. Thanks for sharing.
Danny, can I grow these in the N. W. how long is the growing season for them. Or, could I greenhouse grow them? I know you mentioned they do best in bazarre spots (compost piles, etc.) would love to try them, but I am doubtful.
I have some of your seeds growing in Washington State, and they are full size, but still green. How much time do they need to turn tan? I'm worried the cold will set in. They mature much slower than my small sugar pumpkins, which are ready to pick.
Just today, I saw a tan pumpkin in our local grocery store. They didn't have it tagged Cherokee tan pumpkin. It was tan with light green strips. Is that one? I would buy one but they were so big for me.

If you have enough to share, I would buy some , I live in the Choctaw Nation in Okla po box 715 Antlers ok. We actually live in Snow ok. My wife is Choctaw. Let me know and will keep in touch. Johnny Mccracken. Thanks my friend.
@@johnnymccrackensr1389 They are on our etsy store.
I planted some here in NC in the spring that I got from y'all, they are growing, one is doing the best out of the about 6 I have planted. Here in the middle of September and they're just now flowering what I'm thinking is the female flowers. So I'm not sure that I'll get any this year. I don't know if I need to start them earlier next year or what but we will see how they do
That is good to know an thank you for sharing the information about pumpkins 🎃
Thank you for the information on this plant!
Im gonna HAVE TO PLANTS SOME as landscaping..lol. if i had a hill i sure would do that...we got squash bugs sooo bad only types that root might survive...
I.was just about to.ask about the rooting vine.
So it looks like they do OK in shade/partial shade...am I right?
If so, I have the PERFECT spot to grow them (many spots, actually!).
Yes they will.
@@DeepSouthHomestead Thanks Danny...I placed an order through Etsy for next season.
Definitely trying this next year. I have purchased seeds from you earlier this year. Saving this video for reference. Great information Danny.
I'd like to get some of these seeds, but seems as your etsy shop keeps selling out! My daddy died 2 years ago at age 91. Grateful that he put me on the Dawe's. I want to continue to honor my heritage.
Check now. Hopefully there are some still there. If not, email me at deepsouthhomestead@gmail.com I will make sure you get some seeds
@@DeepSouthHomestead Thank you so much!
I planted some too late this year.
I'm hoping the frost holds off this year.
Trying to push them a little.
Me too, plus I’m in PA, so I probably won’t get much. I have one fruit on the vine.
@@Emeraldwitch30 Yes , good idea covering them for short frost .
I'll have to try some of those Cherokee trail of tears pole beans , thanks.
Interesting liked the way you explain things keep it up.
My Cherokee Tan's came from your original stock
What time of year do you plant? And do you start your seeds in the greenhouse?
Early spring after all danger of frost is gone.yes in the greenhouse early.
How does the taste compare to Seminole Pumpkin?
When is the best time to plant them?
spring
We planted a garden for the first time this spring. My first planting of summer squash did well. But in July I planted a second round of summer squash and a first planting of winter squash including pumpkins, cushaw, butternut, spaghetti and acorn squash. And also Hubbard squash. Then came the powdery mildew and squash vine borers. I lost all of the plants. The borers were even in the blossoms and fruit. Please tell me what I can do to prevent another infestation.
Thanks Danny
That was good information.
Im ordering some😊.....im only 1/16 Cherokee, but,i would love to grow some....💜💜
Thanks Danny. Like to give it a grow.
Can they cross pollinate with zucchini and yellow summer squash
This is most likely a cucurbit mochata may not be spelled just right. As long as the other squash don't have that genus name they won't cross pollinate.
@@DeepSouthHomestead the yellow squash and zucchini are Cucurbita pepo so will they cross pollinate
thank you
Question-- so do you harvest these individually as they ripen or wait and harvest them all at once ? Also, is it better to cure them before eating?
Would Cherokee Tan Pumpkins do ok on trellises or does it need to have those roots going in the ground in order to continue producing? Loved the video!
They will grow on a trellis ok.
Don't plant near other curcurbita mochata varieties. We have a playlist on the Cherokee pumpkin.
Deep South Homestead thank you I’ll watch them all....I really enjoy your vids thanks much and stay safe
Check out my Etsy store.
Awesome information Danny Thanks!
HI DANNY,, I HAVE A VOLUNTEER PUMPKIN PLANT AND I HAVEN'T SEEN POLLINATORS YET.. THE PLANT IS HUGE...I LOVE IT SO MUCH..=d DO YOU THINK I SHOULD START HAND POLLINATING.. I JUST AM RUNNING OUT OF GROW TIME.. I THINK I WILL HAVE TO COVER IT IN SOME MAKE SHIFT GREEN HOUSE PLASTIC TO GIVE IT MORE TIME TO PRODUCE.. ANY TIPS ON HAND POLLILNATING? PLEASE ADVISE.. THANK YOU DANNY AND WANDA..
Pick the male flower off then pull the petals off exposing the male center and rub it all over the inside of the female flower.
@@DeepSouthHomestead Ok I'll try it.. I knew folks hand pollinated but wasn't sure how to do it.. Thank you so much ! Danny I hope someday you write a book.. Danny's old school ways of life. or Good Ol' Boy's How to live off the land .... you have so much knowledge about everything.. I am convinced there is nothing you can't do, fix, build or grow.. Amazed by you .. :)) Blessings to you and Wanda.. thanks for your help.
Thaaaank you brother (hearts)
Just ordered mine, thanks!
What time of year do you plant these? I live in central Florida and I thought it might still be too hot.
spring
Looks pretty shady where you've got 'em planted. Do they handle the shade AOK?
I bought some from you last year and they did great in full sun.
How's the shade?
They will grow in either.
@@DeepSouthHomestead holy moley...its a beautiful vine too.
Hi Danny, if I save Cherokee Tan seeds what other plants do I need to keep away to keep them from crossing?
Any cucudita mochata name plant
Hello, I checked your Etsy shop and seems there isn’t an option to purchase the Cherokee tan pumpkin seeds. Do you still sell the seeds? And if so how can I purchase them? Thank you
So they take some shade? I assume they are mold resistant? Do they taste like regular squash? Would like to see more videos as the come along. Thanks for sharing.
In the cards we have a play list.
Oh and do they have enough seeds per pumpkin to roast
Yes
Danny, can I grow these in the N. W. how long is the growing season for them. Or, could I greenhouse grow them? I know you mentioned they do best in bazarre spots (compost piles, etc.) would love to try them, but I am doubtful.
You need at least 120 day's
Danny- how can i get some of those seeds? your etsy doesn't show any available?
We will put some up.
I have some of your seeds growing in Washington State, and they are full size, but still green. How much time do they need to turn tan? I'm worried the cold will set in. They mature much slower than my small sugar pumpkins, which are ready to pick.
Danny are the pumpkin seeds n the cream pea seeds in Etsy organic? Thank you 😊
They were grown with fertilize. And they are an open pollinated variety.
Just today, I saw a tan pumpkin in our local grocery store. They didn't have it tagged Cherokee tan pumpkin. It was tan with light green strips. Is that one? I would buy one but they were so big for me.
The Cherokee tan is a small pumpkin about 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
Already sold out, can I be alerted when back in stock??
Just added a few
Love the history...how can I get the seeds?
Deepsouthhomestead.etsy.com
?do you have another form of transaction, other than dealing through the net?
POBOX snail mail. But we can't guarantee that we will have them when the letter arrives. That is why we have an etsy store.
Are the seeds still available? I don't see them in your etsy store
We will be putting some more up soon.
Interesting history 💝
Awesome video
How many pumpkins does one vine produce?
It depends it can be from five to thirty.
How pretty that.vine is
Hi Danny I just went to Etsy and it said the Cherokee tan was sold out. Please tell me how to order the pumpkin from you????

We are sold out. I do not know who would have any for sale.
@@DeepSouthHomestead Thank you.

Are yall gonna have anymore Danny corn for sale any time soon?
