    Dear Susan,
From the first video of yours that I happily found on RUclips (and now I’m a student in Recallers program), my mindset has been changing-and continues to change-every day. I love you ❤and appreciate all that you do for dogs and people on this planet. It’s truly about who I’m becoming, what my dog and I gain from our relationship, and how I connect with others.

I’ve been a member of H360 for approximately 5 years now & I can honestly say It has changed the way I saw, handled & looked at my dogs especially their emotional state when learning, it also changed me in how I dealt with certain situations ❤ I now help/train clients in the sport of Flyball, Agility & I now have developed a sport for the herding breeds (Comebye Cones), thank you Susan, it all started with you, you are my mentor there’s only a couple of people I respect in this crazy world & you are one of them!,xx

I consider Susan Garrett to be my Marshall Rosenberg of dog training.
Prior to finding Susan Garrett, and staffs, body of work I lead a book study for three repetitions and nearly 3 years. Compassionate communication otherwise known by the title of "non-violent communication". I let the book study because I needed it personally. I also lead the book study because it was being talked about in a support group I participated in weekly yet not being accurately represented.
When I chose to walk away from that 3 year endeavor I had internal knowing that I would find another means of studying Marshall Rosenberg's compassionate communication. By walking away from the book study I knew I was making room for what was intended to come into my life next.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined dog training would be that next study of compassionate communication.
Studying compassionate communication with dog training is a way to saturate one's life.
Like Susan Garrett has pointed out in this video and Marshall Rosenberg and Thomas Gordon and Carl Rogers....
"The measure of our growth is how we show up when things are going wrong/the worst, when we are feeling frustrated and perhaps even angry."

My dog has gotten into my neighbors yard twice. This last time he found his way into their shed and got into the dog biscuits. My first thought was that he is now going to be hyper motivated to get over there. My second thought is how I can get him to believe that something better will be his reward if he doesn't go over there. I walked him by the spot he crosses over and he doesn't react, I give him praise for that, but when I'm not there (he's not on a leash) he goes for it. I'll have to figure out how to make him believe it's better to stay in our yard than going into the neighbors yard. (His recall falls apart over there too. It's great in my yard, no reaction to it in the neighbors yard.)

I wish the comment I just spent writing wasn't erased somehow. I wish the 21:42 minutes I spent watching this video would help me stop my puppy from turning into a demon dog as we return home from our walk. I don't have anymore time to spend on this "mindset." I need concrete advice on how to help this puppy. The only thing he's teaching me is that, "I'm a failure."

Dogs That, correct me if I’m wrong, but I would think so much permissive positive training, like not having any boundaries and unclear communication and letting the pet live without having any direction.

@@trishbech9082 Yes! Susan has said many times positive, not permissive. I think it's like you wouldn't let your toddler run around with no boundaries, never teaching them not to run out in the road or touch a hot stove, etc. (at least I hope not) Good parents teach them with kindness, giving them the confidence they need to become adults who can negotiate life.

Jenily111, you know I have to watch Susan’s videos over and over some times to really get things to penetrate my thinking, especially to change my default thinking from many years with the wrong teachings. I totally get that this can sometimes immediately give me light bulb moments, but then when I try to incorporate them I to daily living, I will watch again and sometimes a third time to make sure!

  • @Manaoohawaii

I am always so glad to hear about your evolution as dog trainer and a person. It means that when you tell us students to give ourselves grace for things that we may have done in the past, its because you have experienced how to do that for yourself. I was never one to use harsh methods on my dogs but I didn't know how to get results using 'ethical' methods. (hence, some of my past dogs were pretty uneducated) Oh, and I love when you quote Zig Ziglar! It takes me back to sitting in my Dad's store as a young adult and devouring any magazine article by him I could get!

    🎉 Congrats Dogsthat! 🎉 Woohoo 150! 😊
I’ll say it again Susan, as a recovered “old school” trainer, your philosophy, podcasts and programs have transformed life for the better!
I actually enjoy training and look forward to the dog that’s in front of me and discover who they are and not dictate and demands my desired outcomes. I examine more of what I’m doing and how I’m communicating, rather than looking to “correct” the dog.
Susan, you are a treasure! Your teachings are gold. Thank you for sharing your philosophy to everyone, helping us all individually as well as all of our relationships. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I've worked very hard through several of your programs to keep a good mindset. This podcast has been very helpful in helping me reflect on how I trained my dogs before Susan Garrett and after. Thanks to your training methods I have learned not to get frustrated with my dog, but to laugh and figure out what "I" have done wrong. It's a very healthy mindset.

I don't understand why a human would get frustrated with his/her dog. Is there any valid reason for this? What typically frustrates humans seems like dogs being dogs. For example, dog steals a slice of pizza from the kitchen counter (prey drive), male dog pees in the garden (dog marking territory), dog chases squirrel (prey drive), etc. In my mindset, getting frustrated at a dog is counter-productive to the training process. The best trainers I know NEVER get frustrated with their dogs.

You had me at “it’s yer choice”. I have spent decades training teachers and parents of children with autism about ABA strategies. But I have to thank you for keeping me on the straight and narrow with my dog. Our current dog is a 2.5 year old double doodle…anxious, energetic, strong prey drive, very smart, ball-obsessed, but very sweet and loves to play the games. Have I been tempted to take the short cuts (like away “camp”. But I can turn to one of your lessons and pep talks and reap the rewards. Is she “there” yet? Of course not. But we’re having fun now and she has learned so much and we both say, thank you, Susan!
*And I’m serious about “it’s yer choice”. I’ve loved showing friends with their dogs (I’m not a dog trainer) because they invariably get it very quickly.

I have been overwhelmingly feeling that I can't do my dog justice. 3 dog schools and a behaviorist really crushed my heart. The frustration got to me today and I chased my little guy yelling through the yard in nightgown and slippers and punished him by putting him in his crate. Helplessness really throws ethics out the window 😢. I have been yanking on his leash too and don't go for walks at all right now because I feel so horrible about it. I hope Recallers will bring a little fun back into our lives.

Good for you for recognizing that a program like Recallers can help you and your pup. It will take time for you to really internalize everything and what it's doing for your dog. In the mean time have fun, make everything a game (which should make you smile and laugh), and take joy in the process of learning.

Mindset concepts have been a part of both my professional and personal life for years. But despite the length of time that I've embraced them, it's always been a good idea to review them and consider the changes that I've yet to make. When I entered into Home School The Dog in February of 2021, my mindset took a flip and bounced on its tail! All that I had learned from my years of working and living with a mindset frame of mind (if that makes sense:) became a new fertile ground for a broader and more encompassing outlook on life. Windsor must have noticed it, too, because he focused on me in a new way, a much better way, that allowed us to build a relationship that I'd only dreamed about before. And we are still building on that, considering how we could be better, and moving further away from the "you are really frustrating me" mindset that I didn't even know I had to begin with! Thank you for sharing these inspiring podcasts. They are just as important and beneficial as those that teach us how to get a good sit!

I've heard before that assuming the best in others (this kind of mindset) leads to a better life. Things like wellbeing, health, stress levels, happiness, satisfaction, career accomplishments, etc. all improve. I'm wondering if anyone has heard of studies researching these links? Or if anyone knows search terms I should be looking at.
Thanks for all the content Susan & team!

it’s really funny but I have way more patience with my dog away from the house than I do inside of it. And it kind of shows in our training. From the vet go she was better with let’s go and drop it and leave it outside because that’s where we played and training was play but inside the house everything’s more subdued because it’s in the house. So I have to do things backwards. Where she’ll get the zoomies inside the house in a quiet house but outside she’ll relax and settle despite everything going around her. The only thing of course being dogs because I don’t have any safe dogs to work her around atm.
