  • Internationally acclaimed physician Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners In Health, delivers a virtual address at UH Manoa: "Who Lives, Who Dies: Reimagining Global Health and Social Justice." Tragically, these were perhaps Dr. Farmer's last public remarks before passing away on February 21, 2022. He delivered his address from the University of Global Health Equity in the Burera District of Rwanda.
In his talk, Dr. Farmer spotlights the grotesque inequities in global health and medical care and reviews the social justice approach of Partners In Health. He explains successes against tuberculosis and HIV and places special emphasis on work in Rwanda.
Also featuring remarks by Dr. Kalamaoka'aina Niheu, co-founder of the Mauna Medic Healers Hui and doctor for Onipa'a Na Hui Kalo. Moderated by Dr. Seiji Yamada from the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
The talk was sponsored by the John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Office of Global Health and International Medicine with support from Dr. Yoshihisa Asano, founder of the Noguchi Medical Research Institute (NMRI).
Co-Sponsored by the Thompson School of Social Work, Office of Public Health Studies and by the Queen’s Health Systems.
The Better Tomorrow Speaker Series is a joint venture of Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Kamehameha Schools, and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
