Futurama writers had degrees in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry etc. The jokes are multilayered, starting with the most obvious ones and ending with the most subtle, complex and hard to dig jokes I have ever encountered. A total masterpiece.
You’re right about the six year gap due to cancellation. Fox (which ran the show back then) state that the show was cancelled due to low ratings, but that’s a lie. Fox purposely sabotaged the show by constantly changing its air times so no one knew when new episodes were on. They did this because they thought the show was going to be “The Simpsons in Space” but it was its own thing, so Fox really only wanted The Simpsons despite its declining quality. Keep watching Futurama. One of its best arcs is the romance between Fry and Leela.
Then there's Box TV's "Firefly," which didn't even get a full season, was preempted, episodes were aired out of order, or not aired. Teenage Mutant Fox TV Programmers!.
This show is a classic and I'm so glad its back again, and now I've been watching reaction videos to the series. This series has amazing continuity and genius story writing. Here's a fun fact about this episode: somewhere within it is a hidden detail, very very easy to miss and never think about, but this detail comes back in a big way over 60 episodes later and relates to a running story thread for a huge portion of the series (when it comes up). Now that's amazing. Futurama has come back from the dead four times now for HULU. I hope this show continues on for many years like this because the writers have still got it.
According to the DVD's audio commentary, John DiMaggio (Bender) had originally auditioned for the voice of the Professor, and co-creator David X. Cohen had actually considered doing the voice of Bender.
Hells yes! A Futurama Christmas gift I didn't know I needed! I can't wait to follow you down this amazing journey. Also, just my opinion: Futurama > The Simpsons.
Of all Groening's work, I think Futurama was his best. The humor's very 90s, but still works for the most part and there's quite a few bits of commentary in the show that sadly aged too well when comparing it to modern day life. I hope Copyright leaves you alone on this, since I would love to watch someone new experience this show. Also, the "Job assignment" bit disappears after the first season. It was meant to be a commentary on how people get pigeonholed in modern world, but it would have gotten in the way of some of the show's plot if they had kept it around.
Nice! About a month ago I was looking for some Futurama reactions but as far as I can find there's only like one other reactor so I'm surprised to see you start it. This should be fun.
I've been obsessed with adult cartoons ever since I first watched Futurama when I was a kid, and to this day I wasn't able to find another cartoon that made me so invested into the story (the closest being BoJack Horseman). Despite its awesome jokes and a lots of cool scientific stuff, the story is still the best thing in Futurama. It gets so interesting in later seasons. I envy you a lot for being able to experience this show for the first time, and you bet I'll tag along in your journey ;)
Your in for a wild ride with a fantastic show. Another couple of shows I'm rather certain you would really enjoy, provided you end up loving Futurama; the medical comedy Scrubs, crime drama Numb3rs and the sci fi series Stargate! Each has a great balance of humor, sorrow, drama, sarcasm and wit that is hard to beat. The other factor that they all have in common is great ensemble casts.
Oh damn, you're reacting to this show, now I have a lot of your videos to catch up with. I think this show's old enough that it gets more overlooked and worth reacting to.
I loved this show. Silly and funny, but there were so many touching episodes. And omg I had forgotten all the easter eggs hahaha this show has smart moments too

I’m so glad you’re reacting to this. Big Bang Theory AND Futurama? Let’s gooooooo. I never really got into The Simpsons, but I’ve heard this show is like the nerdy less popular cousin. Very underrated and I’m quite sure they had academics on their staff helping fact check things. I watched a doctor react to this once and he pointed out a couple of “hidden” jokes that 99.9% of people (myself included) would never have even noticed because we just don’t know those obscure facts, and I love that the writers include things like that. Also has some surpassingly emotional moments. I think you’ll enjoy it.
as a pizza delivery guy, i always felt close connection to fry lol. i swear there was even a Cryogenics research facility in my delivery area. they never ordered tho, but i was waiting for them to.
FWIW, Matt Groening's last name is pronounced "Graining" (like "raining"). At any rate, that seems to be how he and the people that work with him pronounce it.
I feel like accents will still exist in a thousand years but they'll be vastly different than what we have currently and a lot of them are going to be kind of like Spanglish mix of your local one language and the immigrating other language
Created by Matt Groening starring Fry, a pizza delivery guy who accidentally gets stuck in a time traveling pod for over 1,000 years when everything is different
Are you really going to do the whole show in order? if so, i am SO on board. ive been wondering to myself a lot lately why reactors dont react to shows like this when theres a gold mine of content. It might be a comedy but this show has a decent plot or plot elements at least, and tons of emotional, moving moments too. this show has it all.
"Popcorn In Bed" is doing "Firefly" and you're starting a cult favorite SF Animated series? This is a great way to start the week.;) "Space Pilot 3000" is the gateway drug to the world of Futurama. By the way, Earth hosts a number of Alien species that you will see throughout the series.
It's fun that you misnamed Fry as Philip because his full name is Philip J. Fry (which by this point I'm sure you already know, but maybe you didn't remember this coincidence xD). Also, The Simpsons is THE series I'd go to for social commentary. Its first 10 or so seasons are probably the best depiction of American society of its era in a lot of ways.
One big joke in season one that takes explanation- Lela the alien cyclops is voiced by Katie Segal who stared in "Married... with children" a future episode is a parody of that show
this is my first reaction of yours, and i really like how you go about it. alot of reactors are overly shouty and have frankly a lame sense of humor, so i quite enjoy your commentary c: it feels like when i first watched futurama as a kid lol. and i love seeing your thoughts on the world itself, 'capitalistic nightmare' sounds about right lol.
I wish you would react to SANTA CLARITA DIET (zombie alert!), a brilliant show with ONLY 30episodes/20min long so you could finish it pretty fast! Joel & Sheila's relationship is AWESOME to watch! Drew Barrymore is such an amazing actress & we get the sexy TImothy Olyphant with his awkward smile in the perfect/worst situations... The beginning is a bit slow so please give it a chance, a few episodes and you will be hooked! Also WRECKED (Lost "parody") another brilliant show with also only 30ep/20min long! :)
so I have this cap, my wife calls a whaling hat.... while wearing it, guess what my theme song is!?!?!? wow, yet another series I love. Hey.. have you considered 2 eps per upload? Big Bang theory could certainly do with it. Either way, enjoying your reactions, thanks!
So is anybody going to point out the fact that the countdown for new years Is being counted down from 10 all over the world at the same time when we have this thing called time zones that wouldn't allow this 😐😀

One of the writers invented a math theorem just for an episode.

This is such a fun show, I definitely need to rewatch it
I watched it like 20 times already, all seasons and movies, but yes, it's time to do it again! :)

its a fun show and a twisted sense of humor. Tons of memes have been born from this series. Hope you enjoy the twists ahead.

Good thoughtful reaction. This is one of my favorite shows of all time.
The 4 fingers thing is a Matt Groening trait, the Simpsons only have 4 fingers too...except for God who has 5
INTERESTING. So in the Groeningverse, people were NOT made in God's image.

that's because they ended the show before it had the chance to become bad, while with the simpsons they still trying to exploit that corpse
