You can understand how complex this arrangement is just by the fact that this the first time they seem like they have to try. In an interview they did in Japan each of them said what was the most difficult part for them in the song and that it took a lot of consentration. It is well worth the Grammy!
Blows my mind how they make certain effects ... like that bit from 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' -- how'd they create the synth? It sounds exactly like how it does on the record. Wonder if they come up with the breakdown together, or if just one or two of them do it? 😶
porcusuxor For the words, it's just one person altering the way the way words come out of their mouths. The background is made up by one or two people like you suggested. It's just a matter of mastering the art of altering sounds from the mouth, which amazes me as well. :)
To make it sound like synth, you have to add to it a certain rumbling sound that blends in with the voice. Also, curling your tongue inside your mouth can thicken the sound that comes out, depending on how your tongue is curled.
So like, I just came from watching a very long list of college kids doing PTX covers (some of them pretty darn good), and then I came here, and at first I didn't realize something was amiss, but then I realized that I was watching this and thinking of them as another group of college students doing a cover and how similar they were to the previous videos, and now my brain is like... whoa.
I think kevin is the biggest in ptx and I think Scott is the longest I thing Kirstie is the shortest and mitch is the skinniest and avi is the most swaggest
Can’t say I’m a fan of this song live. It seems like in every performance they’re always double timing and rushing the song. I wish they’d slow it down to the original speed.

That's actually for a drone, but it works anyway.
+porcusuxor I think part of it is because at any given moment, at least two of them are singing, so the harmonies make it sound like there are layers.
