  • The storms of March 2021 brought the usual deluge of Albizia wood to litter our beachs. This year they also brought a remarkable amout of beach erosion which has undermined the bike path, taken out the parking lot and almost completely eliminated the beach.

    Mahalo for the Video, Really enjoyed it. I lived on Kauai for 15 years and moved back to the mainland. My families hearts go out to those that are suffering from flooding. Aloha, and Blessings.

    This erosion of Wailua beach happened before, our surfboards used to end up on the rocks (before leashes) along Kuhio Highway fronting Coco Palms. The line of rocks along the highway then is where the bikepath is now located. This was in the mid 60's, lasted for at least a year before the beach came back.

    Thanks for sharing this as its very educational to see the land and surroundings. There was also a lot I learned from your editorial. Do more of this and on the local happenings on island. Your reporting seems fair and balanced which is refreshing. I subscribed to the channel in hopes of more overhead views of Kauai. Mahalo.

    Hello, my family and I stay at Pono Kai two to three times a year, unfortunately due to Covid we have not been since August 2019. If you happen to be in the area could you get a drone shot of how Pono Kai beaches look? Also does the McDonalds down the road still have deep fried apple pies? I miss those. Thanks for showing these drone shots. I am saddened by the loss of beach in front of the old Coco Palms.

    Why is the State not cleaning up the accumulating drift wood off the beach? What? Are they just going to let it pile up forever? It's already a huge undertaking. Imagine in 5 more years of neglect. One excavator is hardly a solution.

    You should mentiom that the Albizia being washed down is a result of the State using the "chop & drop"method with the removal of Albizia trees up past loop road. Very poor idea that has had devastating effects on the land downstream from it.

    • @beautifulkauai7094
      @beautifulkauai7094  3 года назад +2

      I think there are a few people looking at this a little closer. A lot of the cut logs on 'Alio Beach were from work on the logjam at the bridge. I have been mapping all the albizia in Wailua ahupua'a for a while now (from aerial photos) and will make a video on that when it is finished.

      This is a very good point. I see them come and chop many trees down and they just leave the pieces in the woods. Seems they should do like Chefs and clean as they go.

    The traffic will still suck in that area. All they are doing is moving the bottle neck to the Wailua bridge then it’s back to a single lane again.

    • @beautifulkauai7094
      @beautifulkauai7094  3 года назад +1

      There is a significant amount that head up Kuamo'o so this is an important first step. Hold up on adding another lane to Lihue may be the area by the golf course with water on either side?

    Still think 2-lanes to Wailua Marina Entrance then move back to 1-lane is kinda lame.

    • @beautifulkauai7094
      @beautifulkauai7094  3 года назад

      an evolution, not a revolution. There is a certain amount of people that head up kuamo'o so the brigde is the main choke point... adding another lane to Hanama'ulu involves dealing with the ditches that flank the road by the golf course. Hopefully that is on their radar.

    I have a mixed reaction to your video. While it seems that climate change and global warming have caused serious issues that have impacted our islands which your video may document. The ebb and flow of sand on our beaches are directly affected by the same weather patterns. This is also mentioned by a previous commenter. However, I am not sure that the Albizia trees are a major cause of the flooding and reef destruction. The loss of the mountain forests occurred in the past century and albizia trees were planted to restore the forest canopy to prevent even worse erosion and the loss of the watershed through deforestation.

    • @beautifulkauai7094
      @beautifulkauai7094  3 года назад

      I do not believe that Albizia were included in the reforestation efforst of the mid 1900's. This fast growing species has taken off in the last two decades and now poses a serious threat in a number of ways. Our offshore reefs did not evolve with big trees rolling on them. All of these are factors in the accelerated beach erosion we experienced this winter. A lot of sand is sitting out in the bay and it will be interesting to see how much of it returns this summer.

    Islands wax and wane. I bet there is heavy deposition on the other side of the island. I know the islands there are not barrier islands, but they still move if it isn’t the bedrock part.
