- The storms of March 2021 brought the usual deluge of Albizia wood to litter our beachs. This year they also brought a remarkable amout of beach erosion which has undermined the bike path, taken out the parking lot and almost completely eliminated the beach.
Mahalo for the Video, Really enjoyed it. I lived on Kauai for 15 years and moved back to the mainland. My families hearts go out to those that are suffering from flooding. Aloha, and Blessings.
My first time visiting Kauai was about 20 years ago. And the changes in that time are crazy.
Jheez
This erosion of Wailua beach happened before, our surfboards used to end up on the rocks (before leashes) along Kuhio Highway fronting Coco Palms. The line of rocks along the highway then is where the bikepath is now located. This was in the mid 60's, lasted for at least a year before the beach came back.

Epic instrumental and video thanks brada!
Fantastic drone footage. Very informative. Thank you. New sub.
Thanks for your great videos.Do you have any of Hanalei Bay Area?
Not at the moment.
Awesome video thanks for sharing 🤙🏾
Thanks for sharing this as its very educational to see the land and surroundings. There was also a lot I learned from your editorial. Do more of this and on the local happenings on island. Your reporting seems fair and balanced which is refreshing. I subscribed to the channel in hopes of more overhead views of Kauai. Mahalo.
Aloha Norman. Check out the other videos on this channel.. there are some more extensive aerial videos of Kauai's eastside.
Hello, my family and I stay at Pono Kai two to three times a year, unfortunately due to Covid we have not been since August 2019. If you happen to be in the area could you get a drone shot of how Pono Kai beaches look? Also does the McDonalds down the road still have deep fried apple pies? I miss those. Thanks for showing these drone shots. I am saddened by the loss of beach in front of the old Coco Palms.
This video from our channel shows Pono Kai and covers the bike path from Kapa'a Shores to Kealia Beach: ruclips.net/video/9U3DTta7vvE/видео.html
Really puts things in perspective. Thank you!
Sad my Aina disapearing. Once paddle surfed out there
I have heard that Maka'iwa was disturbed by putting in the swimming ponds at Lydgate?
A tragedy… Such a beautiful area. So sad for all the people who call this home.
I wondered last week why the ramp was going direct into the ocean.... honestly if someone wasn't paying attention they could turn right there...knock a few flimsy cones over and right into the ocean
Why is the State not cleaning up the accumulating drift wood off the beach? What? Are they just going to let it pile up forever? It's already a huge undertaking. Imagine in 5 more years of neglect. One excavator is hardly a solution.
omg...this is shocking...I remember being there multiple times in the past and never saw it look like this - with brown water, disappearing beaches and the massive amount of driftwood. Can't believe what I'm seeing.
Good reporting.
Falcataria moluccana, the albizia trees in Hawaii, are *THE* fastest growing tree in the world... As much as one inch per day.
Ask logging companies for solutions and what kinds of machinery they need to clean up aloha Kauai
Maui really needs a "public transportation system" for not just for the local community citizens but also for Tourists. This will lessen the need for so much rental vehicles and wastes.
The brownish river water reminded me of Southeast Asian countries.
This is so sad. Hope the rain stops for you soon.
This guy the bridge he is talking about is new the parking lot he SAYS he used to park at is under the new bridge this our cycle during the winter I’ve lived here for 38 years we have floods every year some bigger than others It’s the tropical climate and we’re the home of the wettest spot in the island’s
Jheez....invasive species disaster
Cause & effect, all man made. Building a rock wall, jetty or better yet illegal ocean front walls by investors who pay-off politicians!!! State & County mindset is still reactive not proactive🤙🏽
You should mentiom that the Albizia being washed down is a result of the State using the "chop & drop"method with the removal of Albizia trees up past loop road. Very poor idea that has had devastating effects on the land downstream from it.
I think there are a few people looking at this a little closer. A lot of the cut logs on 'Alio Beach were from work on the logjam at the bridge. I have been mapping all the albizia in Wailua ahupua'a for a while now (from aerial photos) and will make a video on that when it is finished.
This is a very good point. I see them come and chop many trees down and they just leave the pieces in the woods. Seems they should do like Chefs and clean as they go.
Isn’t there a biomass energy plant on Kaua’i that “could” burn all this material!? Need constant grants to collect it as that’s no volunteer gig...
What an Outstanding Video of the recent, or shall I say; on-going rains on Kaua'i. Excellent narration. Very informative! Mahalo Nui!
thanks. sad, the amount of driftwood from those trees is crazy. will be beautiful once again soon though..
The traffic will still suck in that area. All they are doing is moving the bottle neck to the Wailua bridge then it’s back to a single lane again.
There is a significant amount that head up Kuamo'o so this is an important first step. Hold up on adding another lane to Lihue may be the area by the golf course with water on either side?
Excellent video. Sad. Thank you for the intelligent narrative about the invasive trees. Explains a lot about the debris.
Still think 2-lanes to Wailua Marina Entrance then move back to 1-lane is kinda lame.
an evolution, not a revolution. There is a certain amount of people that head up kuamo'o so the brigde is the main choke point... adding another lane to Hanama'ulu involves dealing with the ditches that flank the road by the golf course. Hopefully that is on their radar.
So sorry to see the erosion damage to my favorite beach on beautiful Kauai.
This makes me so sad :( my buddies thrift shop keeps flooding and Bob has his hands full over at the palms now.
Don't think I can fit under the bridge anymore
Can they use the wood in wood products somehow? Thank you for this excellent video.
I'm going in September that's really sad
Thanks for the video.
I have a mixed reaction to your video. While it seems that climate change and global warming have caused serious issues that have impacted our islands which your video may document. The ebb and flow of sand on our beaches are directly affected by the same weather patterns. This is also mentioned by a previous commenter. However, I am not sure that the Albizia trees are a major cause of the flooding and reef destruction. The loss of the mountain forests occurred in the past century and albizia trees were planted to restore the forest canopy to prevent even worse erosion and the loss of the watershed through deforestation.
I do not believe that Albizia were included in the reforestation efforst of the mid 1900's. This fast growing species has taken off in the last two decades and now poses a serious threat in a number of ways. Our offshore reefs did not evolve with big trees rolling on them. All of these are factors in the accelerated beach erosion we experienced this winter. A lot of sand is sitting out in the bay and it will be interesting to see how much of it returns this summer.
Wow!❤️
Wow
Islands wax and wane. I bet there is heavy deposition on the other side of the island. I know the islands there are not barrier islands, but they still move if it isn’t the bedrock part.
This is devastating about the alibiza trees destroying the reef! Great video, thank you for sharing. Praying for the community to recover from this
Auwei!
@moldyoreo right, its been a while, 25 years to be exact. No can spell old Hawaiian now but can still talk da kine when need. Regular oreo stay brown on da outside, white in da middle, like one coconut, not? Moldy kine I nevah had see.
Super cool use of a drone & thank you ! I was there during these last rains & it is most powerful seeing the impacts from the ocean and air sides :-). When it’s said “the parking lot we used to park at that now is gone” (opposite Cocoa Palms), how many years back was that ?
Sad to see the flooding and super sad to see the old coco palms.
Invasive for sure: I see Bamboo in New Jersey! Please be aware.
I lived at Anini beach in the 80's. Beautiful...
County needs to implement vetiver grass. Wasting tax dollars
best for the hillsides... not really any vegetation (other then mangroves) that will stop the ocean swells.
@@beautifulkauai7094 we have some really successful ocean plantings. They are tricky but with planning can act like a mangrove. The late Chris Lawfords place is a great example on Maui
@@bigislandsoil The root structures are amazing!
All those trees by the bridge are not gone including the palm... the power of the ocean...
great video
The natural course of nature's flooding and sea level rising predicts that the highway will at some point in the not too distant future, be subject to major erosion, and something radical should be on the drawing already.....thanks for the informative video.
💔
Excellent job. I find it staggering to hear about climate change, destruction of the beaches and anything "man made" and in nearly the same breath that it will be rebuilt. Why bother when you know you cant fight mother nature or build on sand.
Why bother? Because it is our home....
Will be visiting in June, so sorry to see this.
