@@Nick-up5wv I'm actually not against tanya being a traitor as she seemingly repeatedly says she's loyal to her heart/herself and whatever catches her attention with the right motive it could happen. It seems all the characters in Liu Kang's universe are fundamentally the same personality wise with different motives. Kung Lao will never be humble, Raiden is always nice and polite, Johnny cage is still egotistical and goofy, Shao is still a power hungry tyrant, and melieena is still jealous of Kitana and with a short fuse so why would Tanya be any different.

I seriously felt that she was so misunderstood in this game Tanya was always known to be a traitor non-loyal jobber and the fact that they did the opposite in this game makes her seem fresh and can do more than just be a Traitor or like that.
That's why a Tanya who is loyal only to Mileena to a fault is inspired. This is one of the characters Liu Kang successfully redeemed. General Shao, the opposite of Tanya, was supposed to serve the same purpose to Sindel. But Shang Tsung and Quan Chi successfully poisoned his mind.
She can do more than just be good as well and not be a servant. She's basically a servant
And that would be a good argument if she actually looked, felt, acted or played like Tanya. It dosen't feel like Tanya doing something new, it feels like it's a different person compleatly.
Remember that these are not the real characters, but the ones shaped by Liu Kang... so every character will be gooder than it is in truth

It’s funny hearing so many people using the same argument of, “this isn’t Tanya” when the entire purpose of NRS introducing Liu’s New Era is to offer a fresh take on classic characters. I’m glad that Tanya is no longer a one-dimensional backstabber. Her storyline as an Umgadi priestess is far more interesting than her being a traitor because it offers potential for change/growth. Also, the conniving narrative suits D’Vorah more than Tanya since the former is fighting for the survival of her entire species and she’s distrustful of everyone else.
Especially within multiverse plots involving MULTIPLE timelines. It’s not just a retcon, but literally endless outcomes. It’s as if they expect every single timeline to be exactly the same with no deviation of the characters’s development or makeup whatsoever.

it's more that the Tanya in MK1 is completely disconnected from the original. MK1 had a pretty clear desgin philsophy to me that characters fall under four catergorys.

Internally different
a bit of both
staying the same.
for example Rain is externally different from his prior incarnation. in MK11 he weilds a Katar and wields water like how sub zero wields Ice, but in MK1 he's a mage using his staff to create portals and beams of water. but internally he's the same rain we've had in preivous games. a schemer, someone who will use others to his benefit as it suits him.
Baraka is a character who is externally the same but has a different personality and motives.
reptile is a bit of both but some of his old personality still bleeds through like his attacks and gameplay, where you can clearly tell it's reptile.
and characters like Johnny cage, reiko and ashrah are mostly the same character internally and externally.
however this system doesn't really apply to Tanya. Tanya's personality is so vastly different and her abilities and general apperance are also different from before that she's practically a different character. there is nothing to inidcate to someone that this character is tanya. she has none of her iconic weapons. her eyes don't glow in the same way. none of her previous asthetic has carried over. none of personality has carried over. and there is literally nothing about this character that tells you it's tanya other than the colour yellow and that her name is Tanya.
In my humble opinion Tanya is an extremely boring character when she's like this. the push and pull of with her relationship between mileena was a far more interesting concept than having tanya and mileena just be a thing. not mention that we already have a bunch of honourable warriors, both men and women. Tanya doesn't need to add to that group.
and regardless of if you want to admit it or not she is a jobber. Tanya Jobs to everyone she fights and there is no way of saying otherwise.
for example, she jobs to kenshi before he got sento. Kenshi was apart of the Yakuza sure but Tanya is probably 10,000 years old and has most definitley been training since birth. Tanya would Unironically be far more skilled plus she magic. and yet she still jobs to him. keep in mind that Johnny cage was able to beat Kenshi, as well as raiden and since Kung Lao can match Raiden. by the story's logic all of earthrealms champions could take Tanya in a fight.
then there's reptile. Reptile is legitamately a untrained fighter. we can say this because he wouldn't need to be trained for martial arts. so we can comfortably assume that Reptile is winging it in most of his fights. and yet Tanya, with the help of another Umgadi, who is also Zaterran. Jobs to Reptile. that is inherently emabrassing for a character who is supposed to be in universe an tenacious and tough fighter.
they ruined her look and personality. I know a select number of fans like the change but they should have just made this person a new character instead of changing everything about a classic character people already loved
@@Hinesight_CCO I wouldn't say MK9-11's storylines are anything but high quality and has a pretty low bar to cross especially when you get to 11's but that's a different topic. This Tanya is fine it's just the lack of focus makes her feel less fleshed out then previous.
I had thought that Rain would find out about him being Argus’s son and thus a demigod which was hidden from him. It would have made sense why he betrayed the woman that raised him
Back to square one with Rain. He's a jobber again after being so cool. He destroyed am entire realm and we didn't even get to see it. He's "sorry" though so everything is A-ok.🤮
Tanya is not only beautiful, but is a very well-thought-out character in the story and a damn strong character to use in the game with a top 3 mid string, good ground/air projectiles, a 20-frame, full-screen combo-starting special that can be made safe with a Kameo and commands neutral in a strong fashion.
In the story, she is consistent and loyal. She did lose too many matches for my liking but given the fact that she didn't even have a chapter, she had really strong character development. She really did deserve a chapter to help develop her as both a champion of Outworld and a plot device for Mileena. It's heavily implied that Mileena got Tarkat from sneaking out to go see Tanya, so using that as an element in the story would have given greater weight to their relationship as Tanya could be even more conflicted than she already was.
In any case, the primary people that would disagree with this amazing video are people who are still hung-up about how this Tanya is completely different than the Tanya of old and do not like the change. MK1 Tanya is easily a better character than any version of Tanya before. She is now a whole character with real motives and feelings rather than a 1-dimensional generic evil person. People are certainly allowed to disagree with this assessment, but it's apparent that they only do so because of their resistance to the change(s) in this timeline.

I like that you explained this. I never grew up with the older games and know everyone’s exact origins. While I did know that Tanya was of more on a villain arc, I would’ve thought people would feel that it was appropriate change to make her good, like how Mileena has a better role rather than just being a clone.
Making her "good" ruins her character because now ALL of the women are "good" we need BADDIES to even things out so there's reason for conflict.
i love the pieces that this game laid out for tanya, but just like this series always manages to do, they didn’t do enough. tanya was in some serious need of more screen time, but instead she has like 10-15 minutes to be there and present interesting ideas for her character that aren’t explored to their full extent. really hope we get much more expansive story modes in the future, no matter how long they may delay the game
This exactly. They at least laid out the groundwork for an interesting narrative even if it went nowhere this go around but hey not every character can get 100% of the focus.
There’s some material there unlike Kitana who is lacking narratively especially compared to previous timeline.
With more flushing out and turning Tanya evil again, but a slow burn, Tanya could be fantastic.
@@Nick-up5wv i feel like tanya doesn’t need to be evil to be interesting, but it certainly helps to have her be an antagonist. the story of mk1 was best when you could see where the antagonists were coming from and why they believed they were doing what was right, so if they made tanya into a character that was forced to do villainous things for the greater good, it could be really compelling and also give her opportunities to manipulate other characters and even the audience. sucks that netherrealm doesn’t give themselves the time or story structure that would allow them to explore ideas like that
Honestly when I first went through this game's story, I didn't think Tanya as much of just Mileena's cud buddy behind closed doors and Mileena was the only one with a bit of an arc and not Tanya. But after watching this I have to agree that Tanya was for sure better written here than the first or second timeline. She had potential in MKX as Mileena's love interest and it would have been interesting to see whether or not she would commit or only be in it for the benefits of working with Mileena, but it sadly went no where then. And in the first timeline she just had a rivalry with Jade that few even remember or care for.
The role of caring for Mileena like this works better for Tanya here (over Kitana, who's just there and does even less than Tanya) as it adds a layer of depth as it shows the two truly have very strong feelings for each other that she's even willing to take risks for as Umgadi. It adds some weight to the character's shoulder as you pointed out along with her duties and service.
I still think there's plenty of issues with this game's story but Tanya's not one of them. Sure she doesn't contribute to the overall plot moving, but she's handled well all things considered. And I'm glad that to see this video pointing that out, otherwise I would have never thought about her and just passed her off. Great video!
She was written well, but not enough to push her forward. Seeds are there, but making her "good" is dumb. She can STILL have a traitorous nature and be with Mileena. Remember how Darth Vader had forbidden love with Padame and it eventually caused him to question the Jedi rules and betray them and become evil? They should do that with Tanya since her relationship with Mileena isn't accepted.
Are 100% right, but I felt like her character was too Jade-like, like I felt the storyline belonged to Jade but they didn't wanted to make Kitana and Jade lesbians
I love how Tanya is portrayed in MK1. Especially when it comes to her and Mileena's relationship. They're so cute together. They are perfect as a couple.
Tanya's always been defined by her traitorous activities, ever since her debut, and in every timeline. If you strip that away from her by making her gay with Mileena, you're stripping away what makes Tanya her own character.
I don't see why she can't be traitorous BECAUSE her relationship with Mileena isn't accepted making her more complex in the process. Also just because she loves Mileena, doesn't mean she can't be toxic. Kotal and Jade weren't exactly the best together. Just being "gay" doesn't make her a character. She needs to have substance. She could be gay, overprotective, AND a traitor all in one. Imagine that MULTIPLE character traits instead of just a few making her complex. THAT would be something.

This is precisely why on my first story run, I selected Tanya to climb the pyramid. Making the final battle her chapter after steady character buildup in between the other player’s journeys.
I honestly hate how she has been treated i also felt at first that this didnt feel like tanya but post her reveal this is definitely tanya just without her tongas and the comments talking about her being ugly are wierd af tanya is absolutely gorgeous and has the most story shes had in a long time
No. She has POTENTIAL for a story, but it needs to be expanded upon. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder. She's beautiful to some and ugly to others. That's just life. Hopefully they do MORE for her character than "suddenly good and gay." That doesn't make her complex; it's just the opposite of how she's been portrayed in the past. It's STILL lazy writing and hopefully will be expanded upon in the future. For example BECAUSE she loves Mileena and their relationship isn't accepted umongst Edenian Nobels she could STILL betray the Royal Family and follow her heart for Mileena. THAT would add layers to her character.

She was kinda bisexual based off of her flirting with Kung Jin, but I believe she knew he was gay and was simply mocking him. She didn't show any desire in anyone; except Mileena, except it was implied she was just using her. Mileena was with Tanya, Rain, Reiko; etc. If anyone was bisexual it was Mileena. Than MK11 they made Tanya a lesbian in Mileena's ending and further explored that in MK1. I'm just saying making her gay; and again, randomly good, does nothing for her character or character growth. It's STILL lazy writing. She needs MORE to offer than just being gay and good. She can be gay, by WHY still not a traitor? Why not still be complex? Why steal elements from Jade's character and not make her ORIGINAL? She had a lot to work with as a traitor. Now she's just gay Jade. What else sets her apart? And; again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You think she's hot. Others say not. BOTH are correct in their thinking. She's not going to win any beauty pagents and her overall attire sucks. That's SUBJECTIVE. However her character presentation was poorly executed and could be written better. I'm not "mad" I'm FAIR. Some aspects are good. Some are not. She's Tanya in NAME only. She's not her original character.

I don't hate this interpretation of her, but they didn't do anything to make her complex. She's still one note; just "good" instead of "evil" They planted seeds, but I would hope they add to it in an expansion story. Make her be evil; with good intentions, have her betray her "sisters" and fall from grace, and rekindle her fued with Jade OR create a NEW fued with Kitana or something and maybe I'll take more notice of her.

@@Angie2343 Tanya’s been in a relationship with Mileena since X and I don’t understand why people get upset over her having a different motivations this time around I mean literally every other character in the game with a few exceptions are very different from how they were in previous timelines Tanya being loyal this time around isn’t a bad change but I do think they missed an opportunity for her to have a treacherous side it would make more sense for Tanya to betray people for Mileena’s sake instead of just doing it because that’s what Tanya does

She's awefull... her design is lacking, her hair is awefull, her playstyle is compleatly wrong and more like Jade (dosen't even have overhead OR low special moves anymore, her defining feature since MK4), her persoanlity is simply not like Tanya in any way, it's the compleate opposite. HEr realitonship with Mileena compleatly lacks any chemistry and feels flat, especially compared to how Mileena and Tanya felt in MKX.. Hoenstly, it's just not Tanya in any concevable way.. she could ahve been a decent character if she was a new character, an outworld warrior/high preist, but that charcter is not Tanya.

@@buford_milo7557 I'm glad for you, and I wish I could like her, but she simply isn't Tanya.. if they had just made her a new character, maybe I could have liked it, but this character basically means the Tanya I've knowen and loved for 25 years has effectivly been deleted from the series and replaced with someone who has no similarities. And I just can't get past that.
I like Tanya as well but she spent a lot of time looking at the lights in the story mode. 🤣 Her gameplay is crazy & her look is a little different but welcome. I didn't care for her look in MKX though.

I really love your breakdown and understanding of her parts of the story. It makes me wish the whole thing was about the politics of Outworld instead of that as a story front for another tour through the multiverse. Rain is such a disappointment and even his ending, it's basically Havik's ending but then he feels bad after? Seems like they made him flip flop so they could pad the "bad guys" side of the fights. It's way too early to be talking MK2/MK13, but it would be nice if they forgave him, but as punishment forbid him from being a mage and he had to be some lowlevel bodyguard with a katar instead. His MK11 design was so cool. I truly don't understand the point of throwing that away, introducing a concept of mages of Outworld but that being it?
Having watched this video attentively, I think a better title for this video would be “Tanya in MK1 is misunderstood.” but I understand a dramatic title like that will grab you more clicks. I understand :)
It’s not really a debate about right and wrong, it’s rather a discussion exploring how Tanya was written and the criticism for her stems from the executions of her writing and design.
It is ultimately a matter of preference and opinion, which is subjective. So saying people are wrong about her 🎉as if it is objective is ironically wrong itself, respectfully.
Also, a jobber is somebody who loses frequently so Tanya does fit that term technically as well so people aren’t wrong if they do say that. However, I do think it is hypocritical and illogical to only use that as a means to hate or criticise this new Tanya as power scaling and losses affect all MK characters in general.
You explain and address her writing and characterisation well. There are few things I like about this new Tanya, refreshing change from being selfish and treacherous but there are also things I don’t like: her weird anti male rhetoric personality in her dialogues along with Umgadi being MK/Outworld versions of Amazon and are incompetent.
Her being blindly loyal & self righteous & in a typical forbidden love relationship with Mileena is boring compared to her previous versions as her motivations and actions had a lot more potential & she was more complex. It was even stated by Rain in 11 that Tanya was deceiving Mileena as well as she set both of them up together.
Thus I understand why she gets a lot of criticism. She also doesn’t carry anything from her previous designs apart from yellow and the name Tanya. They just completely changed her and slapped the name Tanya on her.
But I won’t spend time in my day to hate on her or attack people who like her.
She’s ultimately a different person and different version of a character from a different timeline. If you prefer the older version’s writing, cool. That version still exists in the older games and *SPOILERS* in the new era as well due to multiverse/Titans/timelines being a thing. If you prefer her older designs that were consistent with each other, stay patient we may get 3D era skins or MKX skins based on the older Tanya version.
So chill people. Old Tanya, New Tanya, there are flaws in both and strengths in both and you’re no better or worse if you like one over the other. They both exist, so pick one over the other or love both. Simple. Just my thoughts.
Maybe everything about the New Era Rain will be explained in the next Mortal Kombat game.

Tanya's narrative is excellent - she is torn between her devotion to the Umgadi and their mission as royal guardians, but also her deep love for Mileena. The result is this strong emotional conflict between willing, sworn duty and love. Its an age old story that is being told in a very interesting way. It enriches Mileena's Narrative because it has created this interesting romance between them that also has its own dynamic, and it also Enriches Li Mei's as well. Li Mei and Tanya are two sides of the same coin, both loyal to the crown but through different means. I cannot wait to see how it pans out in the next iterations, whether Tanya succeeds in creating reform, whether Mileena lives long enough to be able to properly be with Tanya and whether we get to see the whole conspiracy that killed Jerrod revealed.

@@Angie2343 hmmm, I dont know - this actually opens up more complicated paths for Tanya to tread. Just being a traitor feels too simplistic, if she is to repeat that old pattern, this new era gives her multiple complex reasons to do so - will she betray her new empress/ her lover/ her empire/ the umgadi? how and why? Also - she was already, as you say, gay with Mileena, they have a kid together in Mileena's tower ending in MK11 so this isn't even new. Even their intro dialogue in MK10 is pretty flirty

All very good points. I hope it evolves from here. Her being "suddenly good" isn't working for me. They need more reasons and flushing out of the story.

The first MK game I played that introduced me to the franchise was MK4, which was also where Tanya made her first appearance. Since then I ended up liking the character, more because she was one of the only dark-skinned women I saw at that time in fighting games, heavens, even games in general. And as I've followed the series since then, I've also seen Tanya's evolution, which is why I didn't mind the new design, as each game from a new generation of MK she gained a new design that was very different from the previous one. And also because I'm a person who gets used to changes very easily and quickly, and although it's not my favorite design, I still thought it was a cool one.
But after I grew up I realized that Tanya from the original timeline (MidWay) was quite... "empty" as a character, the fact that she was more of a cheating, backstabbing, untrustworthy and hungry for power didn't make her very different from characters like Shang Tsung and Quan Chi himself, so she ends up having no type of authenticity in her personality. In the first NRS timeline (MK9 to MK11) she started to have more interesting points, this time she was also an edenian ( _for those who don't know, in the original timeline she was not an edenian, this was clarified in the official MK4 comic_ ) who wanted to free her Realm, and although she had the same goal as Sindel, Kitana and Jade, she had questionable methods so this meant that she was not seen as an ally to them. And this even made her dynamic with Mileena more brilliant and interesting, because come to think of it, their relationship was the complete opposite of the relationship between Kitana and Jade ( _In MK Deception it was established that she and Jade were rivals, although this was never further explored and over time it became something forgotten_ ). While Jade and Kitana's relationship was somewhat platonic, Tanya and Mileena's was somewhat romantic/sexual. While Jade was faithful to her friend, it was not possible to know that Tanya was truly trustworthy to her lover. It's a shame that we never saw Tanya's side of this plot, since after D'vorah's chapter, we never saw her again.
And now about MK1... Well, I think Tanya in this game is fine, but that's it, just fine. I liked that she is now no longer a potential traitor as it makes a lot of sense as the reason she became one didn't happen in this timeline, in the original her Realm (Treche) was conquered and enslaved, so she lost all hope, in the first NRS timeline she lost Edenia and would do anything to get it back, even backstabbing someone. In this new timeline, this never happened. The only problem is that this makes her very similar to Jade in terms of personality, she basically became a "Jade" for Mileena. Not to mention that she wasn't explored much in the story mode, they wasted her potential and made her world revolve too much around Mileena.
But with all that said, I still believe that in the future They will still explore her further, although I believe she will not become a traitor, perhaps there will be a situation where she will need to betray Mileena's trust.
Welp, that's it, a very long text.
Just one error: In the official MK4 comic she was not Edenian, just like her father, they were from a Realm called Treche, which was conquered and enslaved by a sorcerer called Shil Kaad. But her MK4 bio suggests that at least her father was Edenian (it's not known if he was native or an immigrant) so that made her Edenian by birth. In MK Deception there was a retcon that confirmed once and for all that she was in fact Edenian.
So forgive me for the misunderstanding.
Mk1 should have been a mini series, no idea how that would work as a game but a bit more time seems like it would have done wonders

Nope. She didn't have to be a "force for good" in order to be a complex character. She could have very easily made bad decisions to justify her intentions and still be a traitor. She wasn't just "one-dimensional" if you read the original MK4 comic and follow her in MKD. Also do to her traitorous nature it led to her bitter fued with Jade. She could have been to Mileena what Kitana is to Jade; but seeing as how Edenia doesn't approve of her relations with Mileena, turn on the Royal family and do everything she does for Mileena. Originally Sindel didn't want Mileena's condition to be exposed and was thinking of putting Kitana in her place. Tanya could have ambused Kitana after learning this. Also Tanya could have been responsible for King Jarod's death and used her position of power to frame Li Mei. THAT would have been better than a nameless jobber Umgadi killing Jarod and Tanya catching them. Point is just because a character is evil doesn't mean they cant be complex. Plus there's TOO many "heroes" in MK1 for my liking and they could have kept her evil and a traitor, but have complex reasons for the story. Instead she's just good now. That's lazy writing. They needed a chapter for her where she starts off good and slowly descends into madness and evil. THAT would have been better than a goody-two shoes roll that basically is just the character that is T'Challa's bodyguard in Black Panther. Boring.
Outside of her game play not being as fun as mkx, everything else is an upgrade
Her personality is a massive downgraid, compleatly lost her charm and wit, her hairstyle is also 100% a downgrade, and her relationship with mileena feels flat and lacking chemistry compared to MK10.. but the gameplay is the biggest deal breaker, her drill kick not even being a low anymore is just insulting.

Chapters for *all* characters would have fixed all of this. Using reskinned characters and using them as jobbers too. Like in Johnny and Baraka's chapters.

I was so hype because I thought this story was just going to be straight forward and all about Outworld. Would have been amazing to see Kotal back, to see tension between all these characters wanting power like Sindel, Shao, Reiko, Rain, Kotal, etc. and instead they gave us a tournament that truly felt like kids wrestling in the back yard.
Kotal trash period. One thing NRS did right was make him a jobber. Trash Kharacter and a hypocritical one too.
They can rewrite Kotal. He has a chance. Look hiw they fixed Syzoth and Baraka, the biggest jobbers of MK.
I’m MKX Tanya was treacherous. But her goal was to restore Edenia. And she also cared about her late family members. It was in her intros I just don’t remember with which characters.
She had ideals she was ready to fight for. But she was willing to throw people under the bus if it meant achieving her goal. Considering her family was murdered and she probably went trough a lot of trauma.
And I do believe she had romantic feelings for Mileena but when Mileena was captured she run away. Maybe their bond wasn’t THAT strong. Or maybe Rain was right and Tanya was involved in Mileena’s capture.
She’s a desperate survivor.
But in MK11 Mileena ending they are happy together with a daughter.
And in MK1 Tanya don’t remember her family but Umgadi are her sister. And Mileena is a woman he loves.
For the this Tanya is still our Tanya. Just the one who had a better life, stronger social support group (sorry English not my first language).
And she’s still “betraying” her Umgadi vows by choosing to continue her relationship with her princess. It’s just she’s not betraying anything actually important. Because imho stupid laws should not be obeyed. I understand why bodyguard should not entangle with a person they protect. But c’mon, it’s not like that never happens.

I’ve been wanting to see Tanya Kitana Mileena and Jade interact with each other when Mortal Kombat started this type of story mode since MK9. It’s crazy all 4 havnt been playable at the same time since MK9

If there be a story expansion (like MK11 Aftermath) it is possible that the characters that didn't get their chapter in the main story will have theirs. But that is according to a datamine leak about the expansion in another video that actually outlines the whole story. Let me see if that video still exists and if it is somewhat legit.
i just find it interesting how they give tanya so much respect and story from mkx-mk1 while making characters like nitara, skarlet, noob, rain, etc. actual jobbers. the writing is significantly better in this game than mk11 but its so irritating that theres a clear imbalance from character to character. The villains should not be as one note as they are.

I need to confess when I first saw Tanya in MK1 I thought her face was modelled after Deborah Wilson but it wasn't her, also I don't think she was that ugly in my opinion though im not a fan of her hairstyle, looks weird.
Well, Tanya is kinda fun to play but her new story is so boring. My problem with Tanya is that her character is always circling around Mileena. I know that Tanya is an Umgadi but Tanya being just a servant or in other words a sidekick for Mileena feels just wrong. Tanya could have been a better character in Mk1, but attaching her to Mileena ruined everything. Don't get me wrong, their relationship is cool. My problem is Tanya being Mileena's shield.
Keep in mind, a homosexual royal is _always_ a big deal, because they're prioritizing their own needs over their country, because a royal's first job, _FRIST JOB,_ is to secure the royal line. That means heirs. Can't do that with a homosexual relationship. Royal bastards are also a big deal, they muddle the line of succession, so...YES, you can't have royals banging their bodyguards even if it's hetero, because _who inherits what_ is critically important in a monarchy. The most selfish thing a royal can be, is gay.

Honestly, I feel like old, traitor tanya would've been more interesting than protector warrior tanya, maybe tanya could've worked as an assasin for sindel that tried to lead mileena away from the throne but fails and tries to flee with rain to try and take back the throne, eventually teaming with Havik but after a mini arc with her, she would've switched back to mileenas side but ending up in jail with rain but they eventually escape when a new threat rises. As I'm typing this I realize this would be way to long for a character in a single mk game and this is just rains arcade ending
Just have her go bad and convince Mileena to turn bad as a result of they're love not being accepted.

Sorry, I disagree, aside of the fact that the only thing that makes her Tanya is...well, the name.
She is only there to be a jobber and Mileena's lover, but she has no weight in the story in any way. You can erase her from the story and nothing will change, erasing her doesn't even affect Mileena's story, as she has many other people that love her and support her like Kitana, Li-Mei, Sindel, Jarred and later the Earthrealmers, Tanya is not even needed. She doesn't do even one single thing of importance not eve for Mileena, which is the only reason she was added to the game.
Even her ralationship with Mileena jsut falls flat, there's no chemistry there. Unlike MKX where you could feel the chemistry between them in a "two against the world" Dynamic that really fit for both caracters (even if Tanya probably was manipulating her it came across as also genuinly cared about her). In MK1 they changed Tanya into a compleatly different person and as a result the chemistry between them was just gone.

Tanya could be similar to Vader or even Romeo and Juliet and influence Mileena to be bad and they can be bad together, but together. Look at MKX. They were lovers with a child. STILL evil, but they had a Nobel cause. Changing someone from bad to good with flimsy reasons is just lazy writing.

To me...I don't care if they're jobbers or not, it depends on who they are than what. I grew up in the klassic era, has bits of knowledge on the NRS era which had a lot of tough pills to swallow on how low the series got, and I needed development/research to complete the classic era while writing my fanfics. Since then, I always believed Tanya and Rain to be traitors, and that's pretty much who they are here. Some may be jobbers and need more airtime, like how Reptile and Baraka improved, but overall, these two aside from Sindel and Kitana spell corruption like always.
They should REMAIN traitors and not redeemers.

sorry but no lmao there’s nothing about mk1 tanya that is compelling in any sense. her new character as this virtuous warrior is boring (as we have many already) and in the story, she quite literally does nothing except be loyal to mileena and the umgadi. there’s nothing to tanya outside of these two things and it’s honestly disheartening that nrs would even think to change someone so completely, because even her personality is unrecognizable. she’s a boring jade ripoff, and deserved to be treated better than some kind of glorified servant
it also doesn’t help that mileena is also less interesting in this game… most of the retcons (i don’t care that it’s a new universe, bullshit) are unnecessary and make the characters less complex versions of their former selves. hopefully they decide to put more focus on character writing in the next game because many lack the campy charisma they possessed before.

I’m relatively new to the Mortal Kombat Community, I didn’t start playing the games until MK11 and I’ve played damn near every other game since and I have to say, I’ve never been more disgusted at this community than watching everyone be racist towards Tanya bc of how she looks. All of the hate she’s getting, and the lack of people playing her character in this new game is purely due to racism, and the fact that NRS honed in on making her look like a black woman, as opposed to racially, ambiguous. Her play style is great. Her character shift from this timeline to the previous timelines is stellar because she’s no longer a traitorous jobber so anyone hating on Tanya really needs to get a life and go touch either some grass or a real woman.
Nice try, but the hate doesn't come from her astetic; at least from regular people who care more about her character than looks. Looks are subjective and not EVERYONE is going to think she's hot or ugly. Look doesn't matter. Character does. Her character had good seeds planted, but wasn't expanded upon and is just lazy. Basically she's just a Jade replacement; right down to her weapons. Bi-han was just a Sektor replacement. Havik was a Dairou/Darrius replacement. Her character has interesting concepts, but without expansion is boring. Her criticism SHOULD stem from her character portrayal; not her ascetic. Her character could have been presented better. She's the Mailbu Stacy of Mortal Kombat. Instead of expanding on really good ideas and exploring the character and showing why she is the way she is she just got a new hat. She's boring as a character. Her gameplay is good. On the topic of design I, for one, don't care about the race change. I care about her outfit and appearance. Her dress sucks. It was MUCH better in MKX and in MKD and MK4. I personally always enjoyed her VERY first appearance and felt it didn't need to change, but this outfit is uninspired and boring. Doesn't stand out like Chun Li, Ling, the girl from Killer Instinct, or OTHER iconic fighter outfits. For starters the edition of grey is drab and depressing. Giving her more of a Cleopatra Egyptian look would be better than whatever this was supposed to be. I look forward to where she goes in the next game, but she still needs some work to be a better character.

I didn’t even realise people had a problem with Tanya in the story mode. I thought the hate came from her into dialogues and how they are heavily “men are bad, women are better” stuff.

She 100% is a Jobber, the point of a Jobber is a character who we are told is strong but is only there to be beatten by other characters to make them look even stronger, and thats exactly what Anya does. Being head of the Umgadi is them telling us she is strong, but then she loses every fight to make other characters look good in comparison. That makes her a jobber.. atleast im MK10 she beat down cassie cage and had some actual acheivements (like freeing Mileena from jail and being the one to restart the civil war).
And that's compelatly ignoring the fact I hate what they did to her personality and move set in MK1.. it's just not Tanya..
