      @@theexPAWersFor tough vegetation you'll need a Brush cutter, which uses a blade instead of line. You can get a 2 in 1 Strimmer / Brush Cutter. Land looks great. Have you thought about being Work away hosts in the future. If so maybe you could put up Teepees for accommodation.

    Some advice regarding the trimer from a professionel landscaper. The handle (where your hands are at) has to be in an 90 degree angle to the main shaft. To ajust lose the 4 screws on top of it. So your arms are less straight and you get an more upright standing position. Your back will thank you in the evening. The harness is fully ajustable too. The trimmerhead (the spinning part) has to be in an leveled position to the ground.

    Mice don’t like peppermint smell.
    We had mice in the engine from our Van and did some damage on wiring. So a friend of mine said spray peppermint under the bonnet and the will leave.
    Well I did and yes they left, and that was months ago. Haven’t seen them back.
    Good luck with your new block of land.

    Are there any local farmers who have goats? Goats will eat everything green down to the roots. If they routinely provide a "rent-a-goat" service, they provide moveable fencing to keep them contained and away from your fruit trees. We are going to have them here (New Hampshire, USA) in the spring for a few days to get rid of poison ivy and bittersweet.

    • @QB2ERS
      @QB2ERS Месяц назад +2

      "Everything" yes including eating stuff you don't want the goats to touch,.

    • @dennisolive4741
      @dennisolive4741 Месяц назад +2

      The problem with goats is they are browsers and eat bushes and trees more than grass. Since most of your trees are so short, goats would devour too much lower growth on the trees. I've always seen people clear a circle around the tree, make a basin around the tree to hold water, rocks tend to just get in the way later. The grass will grow between all the stones, and it's very difficult to remove it. You definitely need to cut all that grass down, before the hot summer, when the FIRE season begins!
      I bought a weed cutter that has wheels with a large center area with strong cutting strings. The really good ones pull themselves. The small one you have are good for along walls and such, but in between where is more open, a larger wheeled one, or a riding mower would cover more ground quickly. If you really want to splurge, buy a small tractor, with a mower, front end digger, fork lift attachment, etc.
      All in all, have a good time. 🙏👍❤️

    I'd have a serious think about gravel on the road up, as its such a slope, the rain will have it washed away, you'd have to put sleepers/wood all the way down otherwise it'll be money and work wasted!
    As someone who starts a job, and as I'm walking to get tools, starts another, make a plan! You have the drone, draw a map, then, on paper, section off your areas, and decide what you want to do in each area. Do a general strim all over first, then, work an area at a time. Keeps your shopping list down too!

    After the initial cleanup, it may be worth paying a neighbour with a compact tractor or larger ride on mower to help maintain the grass, especially if you are away travelling for a couple of months during the main growing season. For a small area this can be far more economical than buying your own, and save you arriving back to a jungle. :)

  • @andrewbisson5052
    @andrewbisson5052 Месяц назад +1

    Hi guys, hopefully helpful advice? You can never have too many tools, every one will either speed the job up and/or make it easier! Machines make sense they do cost but buying them one by one over time will make your limited time at the land more efficient and less exhausting. When pruning remember the three Ds (Dead, Diseased and dying) cut these out first then reduce/ shape as required , with most fruit trees if you think you’ve cut too much off it’s probably good. Finally rats and mice are kept down by predators in the countryside but buildings provide safety from them, unfortunately they will be breeding in your buildings and eventually chew everything you have in them, it’s what they do. The best thing to do is prevent entry by blocking the holes and gaps around windows and doors ( rats min 1 1/4 inch hole, mice have no ribs so can flatten down to a bic biro under doors etc) large leafed plant in last video looked like “hollyhocks” did you see any flowers on them? Keep at all the best Andy.

      In SPAIN or PORTUGAL? With the trees so far apart and not creating a canopy, it could not give the results you’re expecting. I grew up in an area with orchards, no stones but clover planted around trees to retain moisture and put nitrogen into the soil.

    Hi FAB job, luving the projects and seeing the wall completed, just shows how rewarding getting things done is. Team work!! We used to grow veg on our land some years ago, chilli peppers, tomatoes etc etc and for citrus to turn orange or yellow, they need a cold night apparently, so keep an eye on them! Don't for one minute forget how hot she gets in the summer on the land, and make a plan for maybe somewhere for you guys to chill off, a "hot" tub with cool water obviously would be ideal or even a small swimming area!! My sister lives in the Dordogne and their home made pool is great, lots of work, but well worth it over the years for essential cooling off. Hey, where are all those tool makers for sponsoring?

    The only problem with putting in a membrane to prevent weeds, and then a deep gravel layer on top, is that seeds travel, on the wind and dropped by birds and so they take root in the gravel. Always be ready to pull weeds snd small unwanted trees from that gravel whilst little.

    Just a thought: plant grasses and grains that the quail will eat. When you leave they will breed like rabbits and you can trap them with their fav food with a box trap.
    On the other hand, quail are very fragile. They tend to die in thunderstorms or when disturbed.
    Looking at the growth, you have loads of straw laying around. Plenty of dirt. Looks perfect for a free form home structure made of adobe. Work at your own pace and as big as the two of you need. Stay away from the low areas.

    XLarge rocks under the trees , painted white helps keep weeds away and ground moist. The white should reflect the heat. Best not to. put the rocks right up to the trunks of the trees as any mulch can burn the trunks. Have a look what your neighbours do, it c🎉 UK
    Citrus trees love grass clippings as a mulch

  • @paulAtherton-qm2wk

    Re - your strimmer.
    It's a 2-stroke - so oil mixed with petrol. Ensure the oil and petrol are mixed in the correct ratio - could be 50:1 ( ie 2% oil ), could be 25:1 ( ie, 4% oil ) or anything in-between. Use quality 2-stroke oil - fully or semi-synthetic.
    A very important issue with 2-strokes is the spark-plug. They work twice as hard as in a 4-stroke engine and they run at higher temperatures because of this AND they have oil in the fuel to contend with, with causes them to burn out quicker than a plug in a 4-stroke engine. Ensure you have the correct grade of plug and it is set to the correct gap - the distance between the plug body and the electrode. You need some feeler gauges for this job. Ensure you use whatever measurement is stated in the owner's manual - it may be in mm or imperial ( thousands of an inch ) and buy the correct type of gauge. Take the plug out and clean it every few hours of use - a wire brush for the main body and some fine glass-paper to clean the actual gap.
    Also - make sure the air-filter is cleaned regularly and it wouldn't do any harm to strip down the carburettor and clean out the jets. There is a mixture screw which determines the ratio of air to fuel - screw it in all the way and then 1.25 or 1.5 turns out from fully in. Adjust the tickover screw to suit the engine when warm.

    I have seen, with my own eyes, a mouse literally walking up a vertical brick wall, and going into the roof via the eves (TINY gap) - that was a house I used to live in years ago. They can do a lot of things. Not to mention get through smaller gaps than you can even imagine... ;)
    Those rounded rocks look like quartzite: hard, solid.. nice!
    19:57 that looks like a Loquat Tree... Nice, smallish, orange fruit with a large-ish stone/pit. Taste pretty good.
    28:04 that looks like a little "Sucker" coming up from the root stock, below a graft. You need to cut that off at ground level, asap. The rootstock plants are usually very vigorous - which is why they make good plants to graft onto - and will take over, and also take energy away from the grafted fruit tree...
    If you could possibly acquire one: a ride on mower/slasher would make a HUUUUGE difference to the (ease of) maintenance of the land.... and be a lot of fun.. 😉

    You'll have time between now and the spring to do research on gardening and plant care. If you don't have a wheel-barrow, this would be a very important item to have to save trips and backs. Word of advice...get the best one you can afford. (of course that goes for every tool you buy.) also think about raised beds for your veggie garden to save them from the wild boars. at least 60cm high will save your back and also save from the boars. Fill them with wood you chop from your trimming etc to save on soil. Raised beds were the best gift I ever gave myself.

    Don't put gravel down. Expensive, can't strim it, can't hoe it, can't sweep it, won't stop weeds even with membrane. Weeds come from above, blown by the wind and watered by the rain. Weeding on gravel is a full time nightmare job. Simply driving on it will compress the soil and keep the weeds down with a little grass strip down the middle. Up to you though😉

    Be careful putting wire round a tree trunk, make sure you adjust it or as the tree grow the wire will embed into the bark.

    The high grass around the low trees may be the reason they have survived in hellish heat as it provides shadow for the trunk & perhaps even some moisture in the ground. Common thing to use against weeds is cardboard, as a pile of stones would work like an oven i'm afraid. You've got a very pretty piece of land indeed! Even the shed looks almost like a tiny house, i suppose it's not that hard to turn it into a frugal one with your energy! 💚

    They sell a special gardening liner that you put over the soil and then put the stones on top. Otherwise, you will always get weeds. Scotland was absolutely beautiful. But I am super excited about your new land because I love that kind of work, and watching it. So, enjoy the ride! 🌈👏

    yeap, living in the countryside toughens the body and the mind. resuming, one's priorities change! by observing the land's generosity one learns to be more attentive to it, more giving, relaxed, understanding that things take time to do right. mistakes will happen, always do, by one reason or another. you seem optimistic, that's a good start. work with the land and you'll have it's generosity. if you go against it the result is never-ending hard work. be wise. be humble. be happy. and stay strong 🤠😎

    Hi Sarah and Nick, your land looks so different. Lots of work ahead of you. Just wondered if a brush cutter attachment would help the ‘strimming’ function. I have a similar strimmer and the cutting cords wear down quite quickly if some of the undergrowth is woody. Nick, I am not a beard lover, but it does look a bit better than in previous vlogs - a bit! Have a good journey home to your house.

    Diz so cute smiling at the camera!Please don't buy quails, especially don't consider travelling with them in a cage or putting them on the roof terrace, completely inappropriate.
    Quite entertaining watching you on your land, lots you need to learn & I'm not really sure what you're doing there at all with a home in another country & a van for travels. It's hard work keeping land under control if you're doing it full time never mind occasionally.
