I remember hearing James say he doesn’t like hopping so much but he plays really bad if he doesn’t do it. I don’t think he really knows why, but it works for him. It’s never good to do something just because someone else does it and is successful. Everyone’s body and brain work different, so stay curious and determined and you’ll find ways to get better that work for you.
Love this! Many players think they need to do everything like Ben John’s does but Ben’s a backhand dominant player and most people have a better forehand. So it wouldn’t make sense for them to model there game exactly after him. Thanks for the comment!
You are a phenomenal coach young man. How about technique for 3rd shot drops from baseline for returns that are hit with pace and either sit up high..above the waist or stay low..neither of which are dropping so you can catch them as they are descending!
Great stuff!! I’m trying to improve my speed ups. As I’m getting better, the game is getting so much faster. I’d be interested in hearing your tips on speed-ups especially how to anticipate the counters and engage in fire fights. Thx! Keep up the fantastic coaching!!
Great video again. I have a ball machine and will try the catch drill. Side question. Is that indoor court something you built? I am considering doing one and am wondering about wall material and ceiling heights. Was thinking the court would be 64’ long and 36’ wide to have adequate space on sides and behind baseline.
It is my friends court that he let me film in this past week. Super generous of him. I am not sure the exact dimentions but id suggest giving yourself 10ft on either baseline and 4 feet on either sideline.
Love your videos! It seems most instructors describe continental as "shaking hands". But for me (former racquetballer and construction worker) - and maybe a lot of players - it's better described it as the "swinging a hammer" grip. ... Here's the difference to me: When I "shake hands" I tend to get my webbing and my entire palm wrapped onto the handle, but when I "swing a hammer" I not only get the perfect continental position for my thumb and fingers, and I keep the webbing off the handle and still get the butt of the handle right there in the meat of the heel of my hand (below the pinky). That gives me great control but leaves a nice loose grip with some space between my palm and the handle. That then allows softer resets and blocks, but I can still tense up fingers and wrist instantly to go to the "strength and speed" mode I need for counters or putaways.
depenidng on the speed the ball is coming at you, you need to adjust to make sure the ball goes as far as you want. To do this I see two variables that you can choose to adjust: 1 hand stiffness 2 moving your paddle towards or away is one of these variables better to consider? should i always have the same stiffness and only adjust how i move the paddle? Not sure which variable to play with
This is great stuff and I am going to try it out today. But if hopping is bad then how does the split step fit in? I thought we should always slit step before every shot.
Love your videos man. Question about the Montis sneaker warranty. They have a 6 month outsole warranty, but in order to qualify, you have to submit a claim within 120 days (4 months) of purchase. Soooo isn’t that a 4 month warranty then??
@pickleballplaybook yeh I try to explain this but it's rec play unfortunately, I think I need to find someone my own skill level to partner up with to play with and practice all the time. Hard to find someone to put in the time though.
I have a simple trick for you guys if you really want to improve… Do tennis footwork drills… for breakfast… lunch and dinner. No secret. Footwork is the key. 😊
Instructors should drop the "handshake" description of a continental grip, it doesn't make sense. First, a standard handshake position would be an Eastern Grip. If someone does shake your hand in what we call the Continental position, then you would have to have your hand in the Semi-western position to accept. The best way to describe and explain grips is to explain the bevel system(easy to understand) and how to place your index finger pad on each to form the grips(Continental, Eastern Semi-western and Western). The whole point of having an octagonal handle is because it makes finding your grip incredibly easy, fast and accurate so you can do it on the fly mid-game. No need for imprecise descriptions.
Hammer grip, and shaking hands grip is widely known as continental. That’s why I prefer to just point out the exact bevel. Here’s a helpful link: www.blufftonsun.com/lets-shake-hands-to-learn-how-to-get-a-grip/#:~:text=First%20is%20the%20Continental%20grip,volleys%20(forehand%20and%20backhand).
Where do these pickleball haters even come from? 😂 I’m almost convinced most of these weirdos are bots. They usually seem to have odd name and number usernames too.

You’re a legend for doing this! Thank you
I love how you describe the steps in every detail! This is very clear no nonsense instruction! 👍🏽👍🏽 Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! More to come. Thanks for subbing.
First time viewer. A great, no-nonsense video that emphasizes the “quiet head” principle which applies to so many athletic mechanics. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the sub

You got it. I’ll cover this in a near future video. I really appreciate it! ❤️
Great session and I love your teaching style. It breaks the shot down and you give an explanation for each step. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate it! Thanks for subscribing

I'm getting a "this app is not available in your country" message when i try to download the Android version. I'm in the USA.
Thanks ❤this is the amount of detail I’m looking for on how to hit better re-sets. LOVE the slow-motion!
Glad it was helpful! You’re welcome 😇

That’s a good question. The honest answer is to just drill it and figure out what works best for you. Loose hands will be best for most every shot!
Man, Colin makes it look so easy! thanks for showing
You bet! He’s unbelievable!
YMMV JW might not hop a whole lot but Frazier does, and it works for him.
Frazier is extremely still when he makes contact with the ball. There is no hoping 👍
This is great stuff and I am going to try it out today. But if hopping is bad then how does the split step fit in? I thought we should always slit step before every shot.
The split step happens prior to the shot taking place. When they hit, you split. Hopefully that helps!
Good stuff! is the app MAC os compatible?
I believe so! It is compatible with IOS
Thanks for the great video! Do you think the 1 handed backhand reset is better than a 2 handed?
Possibly. I think it greatly depends on the player and their comfort with either shot! Does that make sense?
What is the best ball machine?
I’ve used a lot of ball machines and nothing beats the slinger!

Nice video thanks
Most welcome
Love your videos man.

They changed that warranty to 6 months. Just a typo! 👌
With your index finger, is your thumb resting on it or is your thumb resting on your middle finger?
Middle!
I've noticed that my partner won't ever move enough to shade and I always get burned down the line, how can I get there without hopping?
Communicate with your partner. Partner communication is huge. In fact, send this video to them 👍
@pickleballplaybook yeh I try to explain this but it's rec play unfortunately, I think I need to find someone my own skill level to partner up with to play with and practice all the time. Hard to find someone to put in the time though.
J W Johnson is a firefight machine!
💯

Great point! Tennis has helped my footwork so much when I played D1

Don’t forget about the bottom of your palm as well. It’s not just your index finger 👍
continental grip is not shake hands -- that is eastern --- continental is imagine you are gripping a hammer

A split step is an athletic motion that is used in every REAL sport! There are NOT pickleball ball machines??? Noway? Thats hilarious
Yeah they’re sick!
