You then literally talk yourself into duffing it. To know you aren't going to thin it, judge the distance, the landing area, and how it lands, requires 100s or even 1000s of hours of practice. Toe down bump and run 8 iron takes about a couple of dozen practice shots to add it to your locker. Then practice Chipping and putting at least twice as long as you spend whacking balls at the range.
