This should be called "ESF Flying beginner guide" as nothing here is specific to the Reaver's handling. I was hoping to find some cool exploits regarding the Reaver's passive perks, since it really doesn't have that many compared to the other ESF's as the focus is on DPS which is more of a dynamic, situational thing that only applies when you're dealing damage rather than say speed or manouvering which are always in play as long as you're not idle.
I couldn't figure out how to do the banking turn until I saw your comment saying moving the mouse backwards after you put the plane sideways, and it works now! thanks so much!
OP replied to the same question below. Answer: You have to also move your mouse up or down ("pitch") to make the turn. Actually ideally you would bind a key (or a mouse thumb button) to pitch down, to pull off what he does in the video.
You still have to move your mouse. So, move your mouse right to roll right, hit S+D, move mouse backwards (towards you (if not inverted)) which would normally be a dive, but since you're on your right side, will turn you to the left.
Going to reply to this reply. I was going through your Reaver Certs during the Beta and I noticed you mentioned the idea of the bigger threat being flak/sidearms. I can't say I've encountered the same thing. It seemed that, at least nearing the end of the Beta, that what I was almost always getting locked by a missile. Air or ground, it was a 100% constant thing. Now flak and sidearm fire was definitely there, but I felt that I was at more of a disadvantage trying to constantly evade a lock.
Very nice. Looking forward to more. Will practice these more tomorrow. As for future content, a few "live fire" exercises utilizing the techniques you highlighted in each video would be a great addition.
When an aircraft rolls and pitches up to do a sharp turn, that is banking. A "banking turn" in planetside 2 is a little different in that you are banking with no forward momentum, using thrusters. Play with that and you have reverse.
Good tutorial, shows me what i have to work on to get better. I really have to train the third person thing,i just dont feel comfortable flying with third person yet.
Your beginners guide and flight school vids helped me a lot. Hope to see some new content because your last vid was some time ago. But thx on general. Guys keep practicing ironfist's maneuvers. I wasn't able to fly for a minute or to surround a mountain close and sharp. Now I can do it but it took hours to learn and still takes to improve.
Scythe pilot who used to use 3rd person a lot: For high speed terrain maneuvers I actually prefer to use first person over third, as it allows me to see exactly where my aircraft will be in half a second (as opposed to third person where the camera is slightly offset), but only in the scythe; For liberator piloting I use third almost exclusively. I don't exactly know why that is (though the scythe's bubble-cockpit with wing reference points can't hurt). Also: you can't ALT-look in third.
So about a month ago I thought "this cant be that hard" so I pimped up my Reaver, Trims with Hellfire rockets Vortex cannon and even diffrent Glass, now time to take people out ;D aaaaaand every time a fucking syth lvl 100 took me out ... So I have watched all your videos, and have practised, went back and screwed them over, I even manage to hit around 12 out of the 16 rockets into moving tanks :D God It feels good to be king of the air, I even saw a syth the other day see me and turn around :D (he didn't get away) and this is due to your vids :) thanks a lot ^^
Ok, you got me! Once I heard the old Cyssor music I had to sub. Great video! Great facts! Great music (obviously haha)! Look forward to checkin your other videos out to really step up my game!
Not 100% sure, but he's probably using "up" and "down" keys that can be set in air vehicle keybindings. If you bind them to mouse or somewhere else that is quickly accessible, you can do really quick movements only with a press of a button that normally requires you to move your mouse like hell on your mousepad. Try it out when the game launches! :)
@sfgox10 Bind pitch up and pitch down. Best is to bind 'm to your thumb mouse keys (page forward and back in a webbrowser). There is a 99.99% chance that LMS changed his bindings and did not keep that in mind when he made this video.
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. It was workable in BF3, but with just the slight difference in Planetside 2, I can definitely feel the difference. The mouse really is an old thing. Something like '04, lol. I'll look into something like what you've mentioned.
Thanks man :) Wait till you see my more advanced tutorial videos. Have some really cool moves in there. I play on the East Coast server. Whatever the current name for that is ;)
ive learned alot thanks a bunch man even with a good experience in the reav im still noob in it but i can do ma stuff when it calls for it so thanks for the tips man it was very helpful
You should press a instead of d. Infact, pressing a or d doesnt really even matter, it is purely the pitch down that makes the turn. A and D are merely used to "balance" the vehicle during the turn.
I just spent some time trying to learn the Banking Turn. When you say to use the A or D keys, are you referring to the binds called "Yaw Left" and "Yaw Right"? Because if you roll 90 degrees so you are flying on your side, and then hit Yaw Left or Yaw Right, you do NOT do a banking turn, you yaw such that you turn up, or turn down, depending on the direction. Please expand on what you have your A or D keys bound to, as it is not Yaw. Otherwise, there are some other movements involved.
Mouse is important, if your using an old low DPI standard mouse its a lot different from a high DPI gaming designed mouse. Try and get yourself a decent gaming mouse (I like Logitech G5 or Razer Deathadder) you will notice a huge difference in flying.
Question: when performing the banking turn, do you pitch with the mouse, or just use the turn keys and roll? Also, do you hold spacebar for the whole turn?
Nice video, I've been flying in PS2 since beta began and I'm starting to understand alot of what my aircraft can do. Back in WW2: Online I was stuck with spitfire (beautiful aircraft, so not hating) but in PS2 it's like a helicopter and plane in one. I think alot of the newer pilots are just pressing W and afterburner and hoping to turn onto their target. Learning these tactics will help alot of people out. Btw I notice you never use A2A missile, what is your experience with fighting against it?
How do you manage such smooth movement with the mouse? I'm finding that I have to pick it up constantly before I'm halfway through my turn. It might well be due to the limited desk space I've got, which may mean that I'm sort of shafted from flying anything like the one-seat craft due to having to pick up the mouse so often.
Hmm - having difficulty "skidding" in midair with the banking turn. Main problem seems to be that my reaver (equipped with the dogfighting airframe mk.2) doesn't shed velocity anywhere nearly as quickly as yours. Is that due to differing airframes, or have aircraft physics been changed in patches?
On my mouse for exampel are 2 thumb buttons, I set those to nose up and down. But you can use any keyboard key really. What it does is allow you to do maximum nose movement when pressing thse buttons. At first I crashed every time using them, but a few hours later I'm completely adjusted and will not fly without again. It's the only way to make the plane controls in this game work imho. How you set them? Just like any keybind in the options aircrfat tab.
Good video. I was wondering though, is the backwards maneuver possible in a Scythe? I'm having trouble getting backwards momentum. Might be because I have speed enhancement cert on.
some of them I already knew but most are sick man really the best is take off and in 1 second aiming at enemy. Man that is cool. May I know on what server do you play?
For your banking turn, you rotate in the opposite direction that you want to turn and then hold down. Is this actually any faster than rotating in the direction that you want to turn and then holding up? I can't tell a difference, and the latter feels more natural.
When I try to do the banking turn, I just end up losing control of the roll and becoming a sitting duck while I correct. In noncombat tests, I've found a conventional, belly-out turn to be equally effective while being easier. Is there any reason why you turn with your belly in?
hmm....I was trying to do the Reverse Maneuver in the VR training, but ended up exploding in mid-air, lol. tried it out a few times to make sure I wasn't hitting anything but still ended up exploding sometimes, haha
What rig do you have? The game runs sooooo smooth. I'm curious because I have a pretty good computer (3200Mhz, 8Gb RAM and a GTX650) but still the game runs pretty clunky. Not really lagging but the game is dragging itself ... whatever settings I've tried, even everything on llow I could not get the game to run like it runs in your video. Any suggestions?
I have it turned all the way up and things are still stop and go as I pick up the mouse to move it. I was thinking about swapping to the window DPI instead (I've got an older, logitech laptop mouse; nothing fancy or 'gaming' about it, lol), but I'll have to wait on launch for that. Liberator fine, but a Reaver is just murder lol. I've gotten better at it, but I can't pull any off much of what I'm seeing in these videos.
How do you pull of that bankin turn? Because when I try it I only manage some sort of tiny looping having the same effect in First-person perspective, but when I use it in third-person it horribly kills me...
you do realise pressing a or d will not make you spin round, in just slightly moves you left or right, so if you face side way it won't spin you around, just make you extremely frustrated
So, just for dummies like me: you turn into a direction, lets say the top of your plane points "left". then you hit s to slow down, d because your top points to the left and space?
i started trying to get the hang of flying but without 2000 dpi on my mouse i can barely do any turns or anything also is doing rolls and other manuvers supposed to be feel awkward in 3rd person? i always fly in first person in any kind of games and when i tried 3rd it didnt feel right at all and felt like i could not control it

Thanks for the tips. Flying in 3rd person view for just a few minutes made a big difference

Love the planetside 1 music

I've been trying to fly in 1st person this whole time. You just saved me so much Nanites

D is used to keep the nose of aircraft aligned with the horison, the turn itself is made with the mouse.
I came here from Wrel's videos btw! I also just started using an Xbox 360 controller for my flying. It's pretty legit when combined with xpadder.
Your beginners guide and flight school vids helped me a lot. Hope to see some new content because your last vid was some time ago. But thx on general. Guys keep practicing ironfist's maneuvers. Yes you can invert your flight control. Look in the settings menu in-game.
Here from Wizz last night! Thanks for the video!

Epic hahahah
Thanks a ton for this! I'm gonna hop on and try some AV battles with the banking turn technique you showed and practice on that.
If u use inverted, push, ur mouse forward to look down. (or pull back if ur flight controls are regular)
I am really doing my best ti improve as a pilot. This helped me a lot, thx. :)
Keep up the good work!!
Very nice guide, I'll definetly be re-visiting this guide as I practise flying the Reaver. :)
Ok, you got me! Once I heard the old Cyssor music I had to sub. Great video! Great facts! Great music (obviously haha)! Look forward to checkin your other videos out to really step up my game!
The render distance seems to did the trick. Thank you.
In case you didn't figure it out by now. Switch to the secondary weapon by pressing 2 and then fire normally.
Not 100% sure, but he's probably using "up" and "down" keys that can be set in air vehicle keybindings. instant like. tremendously helpful video and good commentary (good voice). keep it up man

The mouse really is an old thing. Something like '04, lol. I'll look into something like what you've mentioned.
Yes and there are three huge maps to pick from and three factions to chose from.
Thanks man :) Wait till you see my more advanced tutorial videos. Have some really cool moves in there.
I play on the East Coast server. Whatever the current name for that is ;)
More advanced maneuvers such as full reverse turns will be shown in my advanced tutorial that should be out later this week,
ive learned alot thanks a bunch man even with a good experience in the reav im still noob in it but i can do ma stuff when it calls for it so thanks for the tips man it was very helpful

hey Ironfist, panikasia here, thanks for the vids!

turn up to ultra (4) in the ini, then turn of shadows and particle effects, and them ,maybe turn down your render distance to 85 percent
This problem can be fixed by changing the vehicle DPI settings for your mouse. (should be a separate option from infantry DPI)
You still have to use your mouse to pitch up/down when you're rolled on your side.
Liberator guide is planned.
you have to pull back on the mouse. your reaver is sideways now, so by pulling back, you will turn
Mouse is important, if your using an old low DPI standard mouse its a lot different from a high DPI gaming designed mouse.
Try and get yourself a decent gaming mouse (I like Logitech G5 or Razer Deathadder) you will notice a huge difference in flying.
Yeah, search planetside 2 fps fix here on youtube to reduce your render distance. It will help loads!
Yeah I think practice may be the issue. I like that flying takes skill and is challanging, but there's little room for error outside of the VR.
Dots per inch. It's basically a way of increasing sensitivity of your mouse.
yer I did a new vid other day, my flying is really improving now. Once get used to the mouse+key combo its actually really good.
so in otherwords, u cannot fly ships effectively without upgrades
Excellent guide! Thank you!
What do you use to roll? The default is the arrow keys but that means taking your hand off the mouse. Q and E are both used in the aircraft too.
It it possible in all 3 aircraft, with any type of performance cert.
Try using the v-thruster upgrade to help get you started though.
i know iron doesent use a joystick and get a good distance of the ground with the spacebar befor moving it will stop u from crashing instantly
I am having a hell of a time getting use to the mouse roll. I find myself running out of desk when trying to turn as well, lol.
Nice video man, learned some new things. Thanks! :)
Question: when performing the banking turn, do you pitch with the mouse, or just use the turn keys and roll? Also, do you hold spacebar for the whole turn?
Hi LMSTVx Thanks a lot for the video, do you use default or custom mouse bindings? If you use custom ones could you share which ones?
Thanks
scroll the middle button on ze mouse to cycle thru your weapon/equip
Nice video, I've been flying in PS2 since beta began and I'm starting to understand alot of what my aircraft can do. Can you comment on why you would bank in the opposite direction that you want to turn? Does vertical thrust apply MORE to ascend rather than descend?
super super super helpful, thank you man. Subbed up
it should still work being a regular on the stream i see him use it a ton
How do you manage such smooth movement with the mouse? I'm finding that I have to pick it up constantly before I'm halfway through my turn. Why not just use "descend" vertical instead of the "ascend" vertical, so you don't have to roll opposite? Aren't they identical in terms of thrust?

The banking turn can be done banking up instead of down, correct? Meaning if you roll right, you will "bank" right instead of left?
Good video. I was wondering though, is the backwards maneuver possible in a Scythe? I'm having trouble getting backwards momentum. Might be because I have speed enhancement cert on.
some of them I already knew but most are sick man really the best is take off and in 1 second aiming at enemy. Man that is cool. May I know on what server do you play?
thanks :D I will check on release, too late now

You deserve more views!!!!

I can show a lot of things on RUclips video's but it is very difficult to teach somebody to aim ;)
All I say is keep practising!
Using the v-thrust upgrade. Check out my "Reaver Upgrade Guide" video for more info.
Are you using vertical thrust at any time during the banking turn or reverse manoeuvre?
Very nice, thanks!
I think going fast then slowing down and turning will make you turn on your enemy even faster.
There's that one menuever which you slow down or aim up then slow down, making your enemy zoom past under you.
or 5 meters, depends on your perspective.
The whole roll and turn trick doesn't seem to work. Maybe because my mouse sensitivity is too low?
hmm....I was trying to do the Reverse Maneuver in the VR training, but ended up exploding in mid-air, lol.
tried it out a few times to make sure I wasn't hitting anything but still ended up exploding sometimes, haha
Tell me something more about your sensituvity in aircraft
This just saved my squad from 2 enemy aircraft!
What rig do you have? The game runs sooooo smooth. I'm curious because I have a pretty good computer (3200Mhz, 8Gb RAM and a GTX650) but still the game runs pretty clunky. when I look at the VTOL it reminds me of the Apache helicopter
What keys do you use to bank? Can't seem to get a good set up where I can press A or D and the banking key at the same time.
What upgrades do you use? dog frame or hover mate?
How do you pull of that bankin turn? Because when I try it I only manage some sort of tiny looping having the same effect in First-person perspective, but when I use it in third-person it horribly kills me...
Do you know if they will lower minimal system requierements? I really looked forward to this game, but I can only play at about 10-15 frames...
you do realise pressing a or d will not make you spin round, in just slightly moves you left or right, so if you face side way it won't spin you around, just make you extremely frustrated
It sounds like your controls are inverted. U can undo this in settings.
I think you have to tilt your nose down as you do it.
when the banking started, I was blank for the rest of the vid! 0.o
question mate, if your still playing, Should I buy a joystick ? as I find when I jump in a reaver now, it crashes in about 5 seconds lol
So, just for dummies like me: you turn into a direction, lets say the top of your plane points "left". then you hit s to slow down, d because your top points to the left and space?
Which of the performance slot "Airframes" do you recommend?
No mention of the throttle key?
How do you make it to point the directions with the mouse? in control setup it dosnt reconize the mouse movements to set em up
how can i set my controls so i dont have to keep the mouse moving to keep turning?
i started trying to get the hang of flying but without 2000 dpi on my mouse i can barely do any turns or anything also is doing rolls and other manuvers supposed to be feel awkward in 3rd person? i always fly in first person in any kind of games and when i tried 3rd it didnt feel right at all and felt like i could not control it
the reaver looks like a modernized apache
