I taught myself this method long ago but a simpler way is to just double the 73 and fill in the missing multiples by adding 73 to the numbers before. Or just keep adding 73. Really simple and effective
The form of multiplication was used in the 1202 Liber Abaci and 800 AD Islamic mathematics and known under the name of lattice multiplication. "Crest of the Peacock", by G.G, Joseph, suggests that Napier learned the details of this method from "Treviso Arithmetic", written in 1478.
+John Jones Hi John, the game in your picture isn't football, you've got the wrong shaped ball. Glad to see your not a Maths geek or I would have had to go in to set theory. Long division is just division by a number with more than 1 digit like 18. "Partial Quotients" is a method for long division. If you want to see the best version of "partial quotients" see my "No Tables" version at ruclips.net/video/JqtuINV3o2M/видео.html As with my football example, we Scots were doing interesting things a long time ago and don't mind you reinterperating things . (We just wish you wouldn't call our game Soccer). Best Wishes Spike
