    "The whole Omni just left."
    Yeah, no, the Rhodes-Flair match suggests otherwise.

      NWA owned the Omni many sell-outs and big crowds.

    Manny Fernandez was one of the better, yet underrated workers of the 80's and I liked the intensity he
    brought to his matches. He was a solid, mid to upper-level wrestler who could also cut a decent promo, and work as either a heel or a babyface. However; Manny is practicing a bit of revisionist history here.
    The idea that his match against Abdullah the Butcher was supposed to be the main event at Starrcade
    85 is complete nonsense. This was the Starrcade that featured the Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard 'I Quit' match in a cage in Greensboro, which was one of the best Starrcade matches ever. The other main event at the Omni in Atlanta was the Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes NWA world title match.
    Fernandez vs. Abby was nothing more than a special attraction gimmick match. Abby was not even working
    that territory as a regular at that time. It was a good match for what it was, but in no way was it a main-event caliber match for
    Starrcade. Manny also indicates that people - including himself- left the Omni after his match, implying that nothing could follow it. However; If you watch the Flair/Rhodes match from that show; you will see that one of the first guys to run into the ring to congratulate Dusty Rhodes after what appeared to be his winning of the NWA title, was none other than Manny Fernandez. Did he run all the way from the hotel bar back to the Omni and into the ring?
    I can appreciate that guys will take some creative liberty when relating stories from their heyday (kind
    of like fishing stories), but when they can be verified or refuted with video, it's probably a good idea to keep the embellishments
    somewhat reasonable.

      yeah- i cant support it either. nobody would have walked out on flair vs rhodes... those two owned georgia back in the day. cant think of any matchup that had more heat- maybe dusty and tully or magnum and nikita.

    I actually love the Mexican death match between Abdullah the Butcher and Manny Fernandez. That being said, ain’t no way in hell that was going to main event at Starcade 85. With the story that Ric Flair and dusty Rhodes had? Fuck no! I call bullshit on this!

      I always thought Flair was an overrated wrestler. I would not pay to see him. Actually Abdullah & Manny, I would pay to see them fight. Both of them are very intense when it comes to matches. I consider the Flair and Dusty match a very boring match so as the match with Harley Race & Flair. I actually find Abdullah very entertaining to watch., headbutting referees is just hilarious. The indian strap match between Wahoo Mcdaniel & Manny Fernandez was very entertaining.

    • @jamaynex
      @jamaynex 8 лет назад +4

      Big shows back then didnt really have main events as the last match. I clearly remember going to several shows where Flair defended the title in the middle of the card or even before intermission. I dont think he meant main event but last match

      as have I at MSG where Hogan was middle of the show. Still I feel at Starrcade would never have been Headlined by Manny ever. love the dude but cmon

      Let's Talk Wrestling

    • @jtbarnett5238
      @jtbarnett5238 7 лет назад +3

      He's lying. While house shows in that era, & even today will often have the title as the "pre-intermission main event," supercards of that era, as was case before & after, featured the main event last. Just look at the Starrcades from the previous two years, or the inaugural David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, or even the WWF event from Shea.
      For one thing he keeps referring this to the headline, top billed, & main event, so he actually mean main event, not last match.
      He's outright lying about people leaving en masse after his match. You can clearly see there's a packed house in the Omni for Flair vs Rhodes (go watch it on the network).
      Three, I remember this Starrcade, and this was just a match. It was not the draw. Flair vs Dusty & Magnum vs Tully where the two hottest angles not only in the territory, but also in wrestling. The Rock 'n' Express match would have been third billing, because outside of Dusty, Flair, & Magnum, no one was more over.
      You could even argue that Mid-Atlantic title or National tag title match was more important. Manny was a mid-carder, who was mainly in mid-card feuds. The highest he ever went on cards was tagging w Dusty or working against the R 'n R.
      The Bull is just lying to sound more important than he was.

    The Raging Bullsh1tter with Abby at the Omni was Definitely the Main Event in Starcade '85 - who would want to watch Ric Flair vs Dusty Rhodes after that? And don't believe Black Bart when he shoots on calling Manny outside in "North Fork Virginia" and Ramirez not coming out to face him until the Police arrived, old Bart got lucky that night, and that's the truth of the matter....
