Be aware of standing too close to Evelius while he is stunned. As he gets back up, he will use a small area-of-effect attack to knock you back, which will do some damage to you (followers are more-or-less immune to this). Achieve some distance from him and you will be able to fight for longer. Shurikens are also excellent at neutralizing fan operators and activating inaccessible gap levers. They, along with throwing axes and wizard wands, have longer ranges than if you merely threw regular objects.
Regarding the marble: I once got a positive response from Evelius by giving him an eye. He took it and said something along the line of "at least you tried" Not quite sure if that was a bug but give it a try next time

also please for the love of god throw your shurikens, they are literally god killers in small throwing form, they can kill the gambler and the trolls like their nothing Addendum, the poison dagger inst effective on evelius he is fully immune to poison and death potion, the dagger itself do very little damage
Give the ninja star a try. Its an amazing ranged weapon when thrown, does a ton of damage, trivializes some traps like the blowing fans and can even be poisend.
I wonder if anything happens, if you take a dead companion out of the tower. And waht, if you take dead Alva to her shop. Or try to sell your dead companion xD

I think this time the galss marble was just at the bottom of the stair, immediately after he ask for it. A little white thing at 13:42...
