Thank you for the review! I've had the monitor for 3 months and feel about the same. I really spun my wheels about the studio display. Got it for work and use it really only for work (gamer PC is downstairs) and it has been wonderful, it replaced a 165Hz 3k 32 inch Asus and has been great. The camera is good enough for work, the sound is stellar (and no wires for speakers), and the pixel density is wonderful for what I spend most of my day doing, looking at the written word and/or code. In particular, I like how well my Apple stuff connects to it. My Asus monitor would regularly have issues with docking stations and forget the direct connect, so I got this one and it charges my Macbook Pro M1 (14) and I sometimes connect my tablet instead and that works as well. It has been great and I have stopped second guessing. I went with the VESA attachment instead of the base stand and haven't regretted that either.
Nice review - thanks. I am looking to buy one in 2024 because there just doesn't seem to be a monitor out there with the same build quality and pixel density as the studio display but I am holding out to see if a new one with improvements will be released in 2024. I would like to see Promotion support at 120hz and I would also like to see a removable power cord. I just don't like the idea of having a non removable power cord especially considering I have dogs that can easily chew it and then would suffer the inconvenience of not being easily able to have it replaced. Aside from that, I think it is a beautiful display and look forward to eventually purchasing one.

I've heard some sales bringing it to sub $1000, and you can get refurb ones for like $800 or so. Makes it pretty competitive at that price considering a height adjustable ASD is $2K lol
I connect my Mac and PC laptop through thunderbolt. It's a weird use case, but I didn't wanted another gaming monitor, so I just use the studio display with a HP Omen with a 3070 and plays Rocket League at 5K no problem. Love this monitor for my Mac-pc balance.

The lack of ports including an Ethernet port, latest Tb4 ports, even perhaps an SD card and others, seem too great to ignore in this monitor.
A-13. Thank you, for an excellent detailed long term review of the Apple "Studio Display". I agree 100 percent with your comments. In 2025, most likely, I will be buying Apple's 32-inch XDR display and then adding external speakers and web camera to go along with my first M-1/M-2/ or M-3 processor desktop computer (smile...smile).
3:55 You always need to color calibrate, if you're working with color critical photos or video. 5:38 The display probably has 178 degrees of viewing angle, but it's definitely not color accurate. That's pretty clear to see in your video. It looks to be under 90 degrees.
They should take off the cam, speakers and a13 and externalisé power unit to make it slimmer. This way we can have a studio display air that is more affordable.
Are you still within the return window? I'm going to go with the VESA adapter as well, as I got a dual-arm setup for $100, way cheaper than upgrading to the tilt & height adjustable stand, and it'll be rotatable!
@@NaviaryMusic No I'm well outside of it. Thinking I may end up using the monitor for another setup and switch to my daily driver to the BenQ RD280U(A) Only because it kind of has KVM capabilities that my Studio display doesn't I have to manually move the upstream connection on the Studio display.
Thank you for the excellent review! I've had mine for a little over a year now, and definitely love it. I accurately (in my own personal use case) opted for the tilt and height adjustment, but I wish I would've done my due diligence before choosing to go with the standard glass display without actually going to an Apple Store to check out the nano display and compare in person. Hi Andrew, thanks for this useful tutorial. I use DaVinci Resolve for my video editing and I do a lot of colour grading too. Do you think this display is good enough for what I am doing?
@BassDad First of all, Android has a 70% market share. 30% is not a majority. Second, any monitor that costs $500 or above, will be or can be calibrated to be color accurate. Even some game monitors. That's not something Apple has patent on. There are many monitors, even cheaper ones, that are better for color critical work. And some are a lot better.
No Face ID is so sneaky from Apple. If you’re in the ecosystem, which you almost have to be to purchase this, you probably use face or Touch ID for passwords, especially the Apple created ones. By not having Face ID it basically makes it so you have to have a Touch ID keyboard if you want to use your laptop in desktop mode or are using a studio/mini.
Works just fine if you have an Apple Watch btw - it can also unlock your Mac and that's what I do. (I have a studio display but don't have a Touch ID Keyboard)

Gonna wait for the next generation of the Mac display with immaculate design of theirs, probably with support of 2 inputs too
Great review - I love the studio display which, for me, replaced an 8 year old iMac 27 (along with a MacBook Pro M3 Pro 1T). Killed two birds with one stone. Yes, it's pricey, but the total cost even with the middle tier M3 Pro MacBook Pro, is only 15% or so more than a maxed out iMac 27 would have been a couple of years ago. The only comment I have heard consistently is disappointment with the camera - I do not agree, but everything is relative (coming from an 8 year-old iMac). But even compared to my iPad Pro M1, it is at the very least on par. I believe there was a major firmware update that corrected many of the camera issues. And center stage is a brilliant innovation on both devices and works equally well on both. With Apple's new desktop strategy, this is a must (seamless integration with the MacBook Pro for example). Thanks and keep up the good work! I would buy this again if given the choice.
Hi thanks for the video. I have a couple questions for you. I went to Best buy to take a look but was pretty much on my own since the sales help was non existent. The sound coming out was ok but too heavy in the bass dept. Will the typical Apple Universal equalizer in Music help to adjust this? I didn’t check when there. I noticed in the dock that there was Word, Excel and Power Point available. Is Sonoma offering free Word or is this just an enticement to get you try it then subscribe? Lastly, would I be able to connect a 7 Gen iPad to this display using my ipads lightning/USB C charging cable?
quite informative - thank you! Leads me to the question: is the update of Apple Studio Display already in the planning stage..? Reliable informations...??
11 years passed between Apple releasing their Studio Display and their previous display (i.e. the Thunderbolt Display). I, therefore, doubt they'll release an update any time soon.
Yea they are taking back all the returns on this item because its an absolute piece of garbage for the price, putting in a panel with HDR now ! yay and 144hz, both 6 year old tech, omg I heard that you can actually hook up an HDMI cord too it as well.. its going to be soooo innovative... they can charge 2500 dollars and i would buy one... oh wait no there not.... and people getting excited about an iphone 13 chip in it ( offloading tasks... what a crock of crap).. my god most Monitors today have some kind of processor, all samsung TVs have their phones chips in them.. don't be an dum dum dum. shop around and save some money, or Buy a 5 year old 27 inch Imac that has the exact same panel in it but is an actually computer!!! how bout that.
Now that was an excellent review ! my Imac is late 2013 now the time has come to upgrade to the future 🤣 I have look to the new colour mac but i dont like them, this is more heavy duty an suits me better 😀
I wanted to get the studio display but I am really an ultrawide girl since I use spreadsheets and have a lot of windows open all the time. Great update though!
Thanks for this video. I first looked for the new iMac and this Studio Display is next to the iMac and I see " oh the 27" looks not so big " to compare to the iMac. So I choose the Studio Display with the MacMini M2 Pro. And with the config of the MacMini with 16GB Ram and 515GB SSD it cost me less then the new iMac with the same config 🙂 And now I don't must buy every 10 years a new iMac ;-) I think the Studio Display works more then 10 years and in this config I only must buy a new MacMini when there's no updates more for the system. And the old MacMini maybe I can sold by eBay or other. For my 2013 iMac that still work perfect I get no updates since last year and that's makes me angry! A good working machine for recycling so Apple want 😞 For me the price is not too much, you must see the complete package 🙂 P.S. I bought a used MacMini M2 Pro for 900€ ( new 1549€ ) that was a good deal on eBay 🙂
You computer worked and they updated for 11 years? There is no reason to be angry no other manufacturer supports 11 year old computers in fact most don’t support 5 year old computers you will be ok
I have 2 LG ultra fine at 2 office locations. Looking to upgrade to the Studio Display for my home office setup, but do wish there was a 120 hz / pro-motion option, or even a 240 hz at this price point. Seems strange and I do worry about spending this much money if we might possibly see an upgraded option any time soon. I am wanting the better speakers for minimal clutter on the desk and best in class sound from integrated speakers. Maybe it is a silly reason to buy a monitor, but it really does seem to sound good to my ears, in store anyway, which adds to the feeling of premium quality. Was surprised to hear the mediocre sound from the mics on your video and did appreciate that demo, as well as the so-so webcam. Well, we will see I suppose.
@@gh8284 I picked one up as well as a 57" Samsung G9. Love the quality and colors of the Studio monitor, but it is sitting away from my desk as I have gotten hooked on the ultra wide screen for productivity, though not as crisp and no camera or speakers. Decisions decisions.
@@gh8284 I do not notice it at all but I do primarily office / productivity work. I am sure for gaming (Not an apple strongsuit anyway) or of the fast motion needs (maybe some video editing) I suppose it could be an issue. But it is so beautiful, so vibrant, not harsh like I find OLED to be, the sound is the best of any monitor I have ever heard (not good enough to take the place of a proper sound system setup, but for a monitor, best in class) and the best built cleanest setup ever. All in all, with its faults its amazing. Makes you want to keep looking at it out of enjoyment of the clarity, color, cleanness.

A13. I had an LG 40" widescreen, sent it back - I was so disappointed with it and should have just gone for the Apple Display in the first place. I've now got the apple display and couldn't be happier with it. Despite being slightly more expensive for a smaller screen. After all, Apple does it best whether you like it or not. I am a big Apple fan, and would not consider anything else.
@keithatkinson It depends on your needs. There's not a quick answer to that. Are multiple input ports important, so that you can use the display with several computers, important? Do you need a quick switch button for that important? Which color profiles do you need? Do you need a quick switch button for that? Do you need HDR? Is sound important? And so on. The Apple displays are good allrounders, but not great at everything. For instance, the speaker system in the Studio Display are said to be way better, than any other monitor speakers. But they could never fulfill my needs, even though I've never heard them play. You simply cannot get filling sound out of speaker cabinets, that small.
It's the least monitor for the money of any display on the market. It's slow dim IPS without addressable backlight. Literally the only feature is that it's 5k, which is important thanks to apples poor scaling support. It's also tiny, you have to sit rather close to a 27 inch for it to not feel small.
2nd gen is coming when the new MacBook Pros launch with M4. 1st Gen will continue to exist for those unwilling to upgrade their Macs to take advantage of the new core technologies in Apple Studio Display 2.
every monitor marginal shifts colors with time. please do not buy apple nonsense that it does not need to be calibrated with time. at this price point, it should cover 100% adobeRGB and it does not.
But thats the problem, no one cares about 100% RGB, except pro photographers. I would buy it yesterday if it had it. Non the less, it is a beautiful thing.
The web cam is fine it’s literally on par with the web cam in any Mac, HDR also is a gimmick most ppl are not watching HDR content, and you’re not really supposed to use a PC with a Apple display. Also the reason the display probably doesn’t seem as vibrant for you in low light probably has to do with the nano texture display. No one should get that option because it isn’t as contrasty as the glossy display, mine is super vibrant even in low light
Unfortunately, Apple has not dropped the narcissism that Steve Jobs also had. That's why they come up with a beautiful aluminum monitor, the Studio Display, which has a number of drawbacks such as a non-removable power cable, a much too high price and unaffordable accessories. I hope for an update of the Studio Display where they at least change the above things. No more narcissism Apple!

You computer worked and they updated for 11 years? There is no reason to be angry no other manufacturer supports 11 year old computers in fact most don’t support 5 year old computers you will be ok
A13 - I bought this one in last week and disappointed for the compatibility. This monitor was made only for mac studios.
I’m in exactly the same boat. I think I’m going to hold off.
@@dalelangehennig161 do you notice the 60Hz as that is really what is holding me off. I would love it if it was 240Hz for that price tag.
@@gh8284 give a couple of months, a 5K 120Hz monitor will be out
I like to think I’m not cheap, but I’ve wanted a studio display for a while, but I can’t stomach the price. It seems over priced to me.
Anyone have the #'s on how many have sold?
Can you review your LG monitor? I want to buy it for using window 😊
We are waiting for a new Apple Display with 120hz and hopefully bigger. At this moment still on LG OLED C2 42. Great for video editing
HDMI 2.1 only allows 5K 60hz
A13 - a 32 Inch model would be EPIC ;-)
Is this display overkill for non-creative college students?
yes
@@singhkrishanu do you have affordable display recommendatiosn for students with Macs?
@@soonie411 I am using Benq PD2706U. This is Pantone certified and good for video editing / graphic design work.
@@soonie411 Samsung Viewfinity S6U (if you are fine with WQHD) and Samsung Viewfinity S8 (if you want UHD), both have USB-C to connect to your Mac. If you want Smart-Features Samsung M7.
LG has a series of affordable monitors that are great. The LG 27UP650P-W for example. @@soonie411
A13 thanks , very informative video.
Keep dreaming...
@@akyhne dreaming about what?
@keithatkinson That Apple makes the best displays.
@@akyhneinterested to hear which one you’ve found that’s better?
Bought a $2.5k monitor to play flappy bird xD
Feels like everyone who upgrades comes from a LG ultra (including me) hahaha
It's the least monitor for the money of any display on the market. It's slow dim IPS without addressable backlight. Literally the only feature is that it's 5k, which is important thanks to apples poor scaling support. It's also tiny, you have to sit rather close to a 27 inch for it to not feel small.
2 decades from now when this monitor drops $300 in price, it’s gonna look amazing in my set up 😂
a13 great video I’m planning to get one this year and that’s got me even more excited about it
I wait for a next version with MINI LED.
The Studio Display has been a bit controversial to say the least, but it’s a typical Apple product.. great all around but at a premium
A13, enjoyable long term review watch!
2nd gen is coming when the new MacBook Pros launch with M4. 1st Gen will continue to exist for those unwilling to upgrade their Macs to take advantage of the new core technologies in Apple Studio Display 2.
This didn’t age well
A13 - love your reviewww !!! :)
дякую, було цікаво
$1599, you're Australian mate, it's $2499 here...
I really want to justify this as an on set monitor but the integrated power is just such a big downside.
my studio display is unusable just after 2 years of light usage. because I did not buy apple care, it cost $1300 to repair. this sucks big time!!!
every monitor marginal shifts colors with time. please do not buy apple nonsense that it does not need to be calibrated with time. at this price point, it should cover 100% adobeRGB and it does not.
But thats the problem, no one cares about 100% RGB, except pro photographers. I would buy it yesterday if it had it. Non the less, it is a beautiful thing.
@@billmorris3334 thanks. indeed apple has the unique ability to repackage 4-5 year old tech, in a shiny box and charge top tier prices for it.
@billmorris3334The problem is, that Apple claims pros don't need to calibrate. Anyone who works professionally, needs to. Everyone else don't.
The Nano coating is rubbish, takes away detail in images and text especially
I'm baffled why they didnt make this an iMac. Perhaps they have moved on.
Bro's using trackpad anf mouse at the same time
Totally not worth the price. This year, the new QD oled panels are superior and cheaper
No.
With such a high price tag, you'd hope this display would be made in the US!
60 Hz for 15 hunnit 😂😂😂

Unfortunately, Apple has not dropped the narcissism that Steve Jobs also had. That's why they come up with a beautiful aluminum monitor, the Studio Display, which has a number of drawbacks such as a non-removable power cable, a much too high price and unaffordable accessories. I hope for an update of the Studio Display where they at least change the above things. No more narcissism Apple!
A monitor of that price that doesn't come with a power button nor 120hz.
OK for apple arcade, terrible for gaming 😂
No chance with competitive gaming but for casual Mac games that don't require higher refresh rates, it works well enough
