As I listen I hear Neil Young lyrically and chords 😎 This guy has an old soul. His grandfather truly made a HUGE difference in his life, it's fantastic!! 👍
Three times in conversation I've said "this song is His Champagne Supernova"...the one that will still be on juke boxes in 20 years. High point of all his hard work.
I love Jason's songs, they tell real stories live oak is my favorite, then elephant my mom died of cancer in 2003 .meaningful songs ty my friend from ky.
I love the Gordon Lightfoot feel to this song. I cannot wait to see him post baby at the show in Charleston, SC mid October. Saw in this past Spring and Fall before. He is am amazing talent.
My goodness - I'm SO glad I learned about this most talented artist on Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" interview.. Just a few brief clips and I was hooked. This album speaks volumes to my soul. I just sit back in my man cave and get lost in this album. I shared it with my brother-in-law just yesterday (Thanksgiving) and he too was mesmerized...
Saw him last night in Augusta, Ga. played for 2 hours with Tommy Emmanuel as the opener. All told a 3 hour show for $35.00. Not a better deal to see a great concert in this country. Man were they good.
Saw him at the Fox in Atlanta last weekend and wound up paying $242 a ticket. You guys got a deal. Then again it was worth every penny. Amanda Shires on background vocals and fiddle was great.
My youngest son has always been interested in a wide genre of music and introduced me to Isbell via this song - amazing voice, and I identified a bit with this song for sure!
this guy should be known worldwide everyone I send this to loves it, and it sounds good when I fumble through it on my guitar. simple and lovely song. more more!!
John Prine says Jason is the new voice of American music ...so far every record he’s made has a song that “floors” me this is one of them ! I thank my lucky stars for artists like him..
This song so beautifully captures the guilt, pain, and angst associated with being the child of a teenaged mother. My mother was 14 when she got pregnant with my older brother, and she had me by the time she was 17. Until I was around 9 she was a shockingly nurturing and devoted parent, then she decided to live out her missed teenaged years. She eventually spiraled into addiction and died when I was 14. I've always struggled with guilt for taking the years she should have been experimenting and making the mistakes that would have made her a resilient adult.
Makes perfect sense. In our younger years we are egocentric, we see everything that is happening to us to be about "us". We're really not equipped, yet, to be able to deduct what the true dynamics that are in place. Once older, unless we change this misinformation, we'll continue to apply that outdated info to present situations. We change it by 'doing' differently, self talk, etc, even if just acting 'as if', till it becomes the new norm. Definitely a process and not an event.
HopkinsBluesProject this song slammed me hard when I first heard it , and it does every time still. I hope you've been able to heal the wounds . I struggle with them often ..
Just heard this song on my Pandora. Absolutely amazing, beautiful musically, sad, and terribly poignant lyrically. I don't hear Neil Young at all but more shades of Gordon Lightfoot or Michael Murphy...only so much better! When he holds the line "...just by being born..." my knees go weak....incredible!
I've been a fan of Jason Isbell for awhile and I thought nothing could surpass Southeastern. If you want to know the truth, I was almost disappointed with Something More Than Free the first time I heard it. I thought, "It's got some good tunes but..." However, I gave it time (because he's one of my all time favorite artists) and this album has grown on me substantially. This song is probably my favorite on the whole album. Mr. Isbell, you've done it again. I apologize for prematurely judging your latest release.
Darren Lamb your correct , I’ve had the experience on every one of Jason’s records , ya gotta listen a few times for all that great stuff to sink in ..
Pictures of the farm before us Old men in a gospel chorus Sephia And saddle horses easy on the reins Eighty-one a motor in your mama's seventeen again She's squinting at the dusty wind The anger of the plains You and I were almost nothing Pray to God that God was bluffing seventeen ain't old enough to reason with the pain How could we expect to stay in love When neither knew the meaning Of the difference of sacred and profane I was riding on my mother's hip She was shorter than the corn All the years I took from her Just by being born. Didn't mean to break the cycle At seventeen I went by Michael No one ever called by my own name anyway Half full generations Living all these expectations Giving way to one late to have a baby on the way You were riding on your mother's hip She was shorter than the corn All the years you took from her Just by being born
You guys do know this was one of the original singers/guitarists/song writers for DBT, yes? He's an amazing talent. So glad he decided to go out on his own.
+Cheston Welborn They actually had a few albums out before he joined them, but that was when they really started firing on all cylinders. Regardless, he's pretty great

+George Hussey I appreciate the Lightfoot mention. Gordon has inspired multiple artists, he's the best. Thanks for recognizing this.
Maybe my favorite song on the album, musically. It lilts in all the right places.

Old men in a gospel chorus Sephia
And saddle horses easy on the reins
Eighty-one a motor in your mama's seventeen again
She's squinting at the dusty wind
The anger of the plains
You and I were almost nothing
Pray to God that God was bluffing
seventeen ain't old enough to reason with the pain
How could we expect to stay in love
When neither knew the meaning
Of the difference of sacred and profane
I was riding on my mother's hip
She was shorter than the corn
All the years I took from her
Just by being born.
Didn't mean to break the cycle
At seventeen I went by Michael
No one ever called by my own name anyway
Half full generations
Living all these expectations
Giving way to one late to have a baby on the way
You were riding on your mother's hip
She was shorter than the corn
All the years you took from her
Just by being born

Her fault.
Not yours.
Live your life.
would you blame an infant for killing its mother in childbirth?
if the answer to that question is no then why would you blame yourself for being born?
