The ability of the crew to perform effective damage control is a factor you neglected to consider. Every Sailor is a Damage Controlman. Even if a small boat attack successfully damaged the ship, the crew would likely seal off the all water tight doors, and shore the hull as best as possible. Thus, preventing the sinking for the ship.
as I understand it, that was a few years back and we bought one of those subs or leased one . Pretty sure that's been figured out and been virtually sunk 100's of times.
Carriers are incredibly tough to sink. Check out the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. The USS Saratoga (CV-3) didnt sink when the first one went off. Also the USS Kitty Hawk was used as a test platform to see what it would take to sink a modern carrier. The Navy was surprised on how hard it was to sink her using missiles, bombs, and torpedoes. Are carriers indestructible? No. But they are very hard to sink successfully.
I thought A Electromagnetic Railgun may be able to sink any aircraft carrier. The railgun will drill into the body of the carrier and explode inside. Unlike the torpedoes only damage the outer body of the carrier. That is my understanding. correct me if I am wrong.
@The Quiet Kid China is already pushing carriers further and further out because of their hypersonic weapons, carriers have no reasonable defense. Carriers are a total and utter waist of money. They are only useable in smaller regional conflicts with less sophisticated weapons. ie Gulf War. Even in that case we could have launched everything from SA and it most likely would have cost half as much.
@@susanchin4117 I believe it depends on the torpedo. The older versions relied on delivering an explosive payload to the ship itself, but the new ones rely on blasting a cavity of water out from under them that can snap a large ship in half.
Apparently there was a war game several years ago in which the US did lose a carrier in confined (Strait of Hormuz) waters due to a simulated swarm attack. I'm guessing we learned from that though.
There's a reason we made space force. That's where the new "aircraft carriers" will be. Imagine being able to project power to 2-3 regions at a time using a single spacecraft. That will be what's coming. We won't know it's there
Norwegians did the same in an earlier war game, however the sub did not get away undetected, you did ;) Also there has been rumored that a conning tower of a russian sub appeared alongside a Nimitz-class and dissapeared again, this also was undetected until it surfaced.

Hahahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Perhaps you did not comprehend what I said. Maybe you do not know what "anything" means. Man has never made anything that cannot be destroyed, that is literal "anything", by the way. Do not fall into that stupid false sense of security. *NEVER* underestimate an opponent, *NEVER* . The fact that you think it cannot be sunk means that you don't really understand how weapons work. In a time of war a weapon will b e created to do exactly that, even if such a weapon does not exist today. Hell, they could just nuke it with that low flying missile they just showed off, or one of a similar design. One direct hit with a nuke and it is going to the depths, that is a guarantee. I know, you said; "no it can’t be sunk by any ship or aircraft", that is a cop-out and I won't let you get away with taking the easy way out.
Daniel Duncan ok buddy where talking about today. And nothing can sink it that’s not a nuke and they would nuke it as it could result in America nuking other stuff like bases. And your proving my point because you couldn’t state anything besides a nuke. And your forgetting cyber warfare and spies. You think the US won’t know if an attack is coming
The ocean is vast. No matter how big your fleet is, it can never be everywhere in the ocean at once. Sinking this ship would be easy. If a chinese ship popped up in the middle of a military drill without being detected, then saying "Yeah but in war" is a completely nonsense excuse. During many military war games, there ships are active as if they were "in war" swedish ships constantly sunk this carrier with no reprecussions, to the point that America leased the swedish subs to try and find ways to counter it. So yes, even today it can be destroyed. We can currently make water based drones. Water based kamikaze drones could totally sink this this ship easily. It really is becoming obsolete.
It can be sunk but it would be really hard since carrier are usually always escorted by destroyers or cruisers. And they probably already know the enemy is coming from miles aways before even arriving.
Even if a missile gets through the defensive screen, a carrier is designed to take significant damage before sinking. Hell purposely sinking a carrier is a chore in of itself.
Gustav Hohls if you can get near it. Carriers aren’t alone they’re always in a carrier group or fleet. They also have AA weapons so i doubt anythings getting close to them
@tyler, 2015 RIMPAC a French 30+ ye old Saphir sinks the 2 escort subs, the theodore and 7 surface ships undetected remember? US carriers got sunk since they were built back then same as now. What is your argument? US carriers become invulnerable over time?
None of this analysis touched on what happens if the carrier gets hit. That's the crucial part of how sinkable a ship is. In war, nothing goes perfectly. A carrier WILL get hit if attacked enough. How thick is its armor above and below the waterline? How good is its comparmentalization to minimize fires or flooding? How well-protected are the ship's magazines? Apparently none of this matters, because the Ford-class carriers exist in a world of perfect military efficiency and can never be hit by anything, ever.
Beware of Stealth Oil Tankers and Commercial Shipping as USS Fitzgerald and John McCain found out to their Chagrin ! Chagrin = annoyance, distress, having failed, or been humiliated. Nowt but factual! Firing the REM launchers (as shown) firing “into the sky” when the attacking Cruise missiles are flying low defies logic !

same range as attacking speed boats, short range coastal sub... They need to park somewhere and hope the carrier group will move over them, then after that they have to deal with the anti torpedo torpedo, that the ship carry. After a torpedo is fired and the Ford goes full speed that a 30-1hour chase before the torpedo can hit the carrier , while the ford fires anti torpedo at the torpedoes, and in turn the sub is dead by firing, the only real chance for the sub is a nuclear torpedoes.. and that WW3... Guided at best range Torpedo go at 64mph Ford can go 40+ mph.....The old JFK carrier was built for speed was thought to go 57mph when it overloaded it engines for top speed, no clue on how long it can keep that speed... Oh ya anti torpedo where not on 1990s USS R Regan... during that time, they started installing them in 2010, by 2035 all US combat navy ship will have them... The race between technology defense and offense continues.
The purpose of a carrier being to project air superiority in the form of, effectively, a mobile airbase means that they will never truly become outmoded for as long as navies remain a thing. Threats to the carrier are real and present, but countermeasures are always possible. I don't see carriers going away any time soon, personally.
Yep, even if new tech like manoeuvrable supersonic missiles prove to be a serious threat, the defensive capability against them won't be far behind. Offence vs defence is a constant race.
They should downsize them tho. Sink one carrier and there goes many airplanes etc. Make them carry less planes etc and more mobile so if one is sinked it aint that bad. Thats just my opinion tho not a fact feel free to disagree
All you need to do is put a few holes in the flight deck and the carrier is out of the battle, headed for home for repairs (if it's lucky). And repair yards for ships that size are few and far between.
If you should number your favourite movies including ships what would the order from 5 to 1 be? Which film genre would you choose - romance or action?

@@Aa-zp5kn its not like that bro subs are different than ships. It would cause damage to the carrier but not enough to sink it
The ability of the crew to perform effective damage control is a factor you neglected to consider. Every Sailor is a Damage Controlman.
Even if a small boat attack successfully damaged the ship, the crew would likely seal off the all water tight doors, and shore the hull as best as possible. Thus, preventing the sinking for the ship.

Piroclanidis no I am commenting on how during a practice drill/mock battle a Swedish submarine had “sunk” a us aircraft carrier.
as I understand it, that was a few years back and we bought one of those subs or leased one . Pretty sure that's been figured out and been virtually sunk 100's of times.
USS Ford: I'm unsinkable
RMS Titanic: Join me to the bottom of the ocean
You don't need sunk USS aircraft carrier to counter it's threat for long time.
@@susanchin4117 I believe it depends on the torpedo.
The older versions relied on delivering an explosive payload to the ship itself, but the new ones rely on blasting a cavity of water out from under them that can snap a large ship in half.

Man has never made anything that cannot be destroyed. So, short story, yes, it can definitely be sunk.
Daniel Duncan no it can’t be sunk by any ship or aircraft

No Name the Netherlands have them 2
same range as attacking speed boats, short range coastal sub...

Carriers won't go away until ships start flying. And probably not even then.
