Drago had ridiculous power and, people forget, he had decent movement too. Clubber Lang was outclassed by mobile Rocky. Drago also had a chin to take those punches.

I love Clubber. I would watch him all day. But Drago brats him easily. Clubber is a power fighter. He is modeled after young George Forman. He is a knockout specialist. And Ivan is much stronger. Ivan is also much taller. His reach would throw the fight even more in his favor. He was also trained by a world class boxing coach, so his technique is pretty good too. Do I think Mr T in his prime would beat Dolph in his? Absolutely! But in the Rockyverse Drago beats Clubber every time.

@@TheJimmyswe150 Under 30 seconds is too early. You have to take into account that Clubber Lang can take a punch, so even though Drago hit so hard, Lang would not go down so soon. He would also grab and hold Drago to go on survival mode until getting KO'd somewhere between rounds 3 or 4

Well, if Rocky had lost the second fight with Clubber and the storyline were allowed to continue without Rocky in the picture, then Clubber may have still been champion when Ivan came along to challenge a U.S. Champion. So, Clubber would have been his obvious choice to fight. However according to the storyline, several months to maybe a year had passed since the Rocky 3 era, so Clubber would have had to stay in tip top shape to even stand a small chance against Drago who I think would have easily beaten him anyway because he had a height, reach and strength advantage and also being more heartless and ruthless. Drago would have pulled no punches and probably broke rules to seriously injure or even kill clubber like he did to Apollo.

It took Rocky 15 rounds to beat Drago, but only 3 to be beat clubber.
On the other hand Balboa had to learn to box in completely new way (not just switch to orthodox from southpaw) against Lang and just focused on conditioning against Drago. No other fighter Balboa faced demanded such radical change of strategy.
Clubber Stops him first Round. Rocky never went the distance in any of this fights except for when Lang stopped him which was in the second round
Clubber and Drago will try to match each other blow for blow, as both of them favor heavy offensive. But Drago will ultimately win, not only is he larger and stronger (due to steroids) but he also has better technique and higher endurance. Note, Clubber lost in his rematch with Rocky cause he ran out of steam in the third match.

Clubber Lang was by far the cooler character but if we look at how he was pretty easily drained by Rocky's movement and skill (once being re-trained by Creed) and knocked out. He was one dimensional. Drago was an olympic athlete, had the size and skill advantage (he was far more technically skilled) over Lang who was a slugging southpaw brawler who used his power and ferocity to overwhelm his opponents, but could be prone to running out of gas due to his explosiveness and aggression.
However we could look at the fact that Rocky beat Lang when he was about 5 years younger at least and may have had more in the tank than Rocky 4 era Rocky; so by that logic we could say that Drago lost to an old Rocky while Clubber lost to a closer to his prime Rocky (he was 32 in Rocky III). So that is the only argument I can make for Lang winning this fight.
I like Lang better as a character and he's great but I can't see him beating Drago unless this was a Lang spinoff movie and he was written to beat him. Given what we know about the characters and what we have seen of them in the ring, I would pick Ivan Drago. Then again, if we had steroid testing like we do now, Drago might not have been able to roid out and be as bad ass as he was.

Clubber definitely had the strength and toughness to hurt Drago.. But Drago is so strong all he needed was 1 punch to really hurt you to where you couldn't defend yourself and get knocked out.. Or killed lol.. Drago wins in the 4th round. Clubber like Mike tyson gets tired after 4 rounds

The rocky vs drago part is the most unrealistic fight of all rocky fights lol, he hit 1850 pounds when he fought apollo, that would have killed any man with those old school boxing gloves, and he sure did kill apollo, he it even harder against rocky, the fight would be over the first 30 seconds against rocky in real life, drago totally curbstomps Mr T, its not even close
Lang had no technique, he lacked brains so anything involving controlling his temper is irrelevant. Rocky was at his most dangerous in Rocky II, his mentality in Rocky III was his problem, not his gains or ability to endure hits.
TheAwesomeo1000, you got it all wrong man, Clubber Lang was all brute force but did not have the boxing technique or reach advantage to overcome Rocky's improved boxing skill (thanks to Apollo training him). Also, you have to understand that Rocky was at his best against Drago and all the stamina he got from his incredible training helped carry him through the whole fight until the end. Rocky had the conditioning and chin to take Drago's power, while Clubber Lang had the chin but not the stamina to get hit by Drago for 15 rounds. Drago's power and long reach would be too much for Clubber Lang!

According to the fictional statistics from the Rocky movies, Clubber Lang weights 235 lbs (announcement for the first fight) and is 6'1" (unconfirmed). He was loosely based on the boxer Ernie Shavers, considered as the hardest puncher in heavyweight history (Stallone wanted Shavers to play the part, but gave up this idea after sparing with him). Ivan Drago is 6'6" (unconfirmed), 261 lbs (stated in the announcement for the Apollo Creed fight). So, Drago is younger, with more amateur experience (although no professional experience), taller, heavier, with longer reach, much better boxing technique, much better stamina, much more composed.
1. The fight in accordance to the reality of boxing:
Clubber Lang is made for Ivan Drago. He has a wide guard (which lets all the straight punches get in). He has no head movement (actually, he moves his head twice in the one of the Rocky fights, but that’s all). He is extremely tensed (so, when he takes a punch, he does not roll with it). He doesn’t have good footwork. He has bad hand speed and foot speed. He only heard of swings, which are the worst punches in boxing (and therefore rarely used). His stamina seems bad, as he gets tired after 2-3 rounds. This is deceiving, however. His is in good physical condition. The reasons he gets tired are: he only throws hard punches and he is extremely tensed (so he consumes energy and he doesn’t breathe properly at the same time).
On the other hand, Ivan Drago knows how to through a left jab and a right cross. This is all he needs to finish Clubber Lang. The impact of a punch is dependent of its speed, as well as of the weight behind it. At first glance, Drago’s right cross has more speed that Lang’s right swing (a well-accepted reality of swings and crosses). This is however deceiving, as a swing has circular speed (that contributes to the impact). On the other hand, Drago is heavier. And much more importantly, Drago is using proper punching technique, which allows him to put more of his body weight behind the punch (by correctly pivoting on the left foot). Lang’s right swing would be a hard punch (although an impure punch, as Jack Dempsey would call it), but not as hard as Drago’s cross.
In a real fight, both Drago’s cross and Lang’s swing would be knockout punches… if they would land. The main difference is that Lang’s cross would never land. It’s so bad, that a bad fighter could see it from a mile away. All he would need to do is take a step back and then counter with the right cross. To land such a punch on a much taller opponent, with a much longer reach, with decent head movement, good footwork and fast straight punches is 100% impossible.
The way the fight would go:
Fighters coming out of their corners for the first round. Drago throws a left jab and steps back to avoid a possible swing from Lang (Lang doesn’t react; we have seen that he takes a lot of punches before even trying to punch). Drago takes a step forward a jabs again. Then he throws the right hand. It hits the chin, as Lang has a wide guard, doesn’t move his head and doesn’t roll with the punch. Game over: one of the fastest knockouts in heavyweight history.
I would say with a lot of confidence that there is no other possible outcome in a real fight between these 2 fictional fighters.
2. In a fictional fight:
One difference from a real fight would be the incredible capacity of the fighters to take punches (if a real fighter would have taken the punches that Rocky took from Drago, he would have been killed 10 times over).
However, the most important factor would have nothing to do with boxing and everything to do with storytelling. Which one of them could be portrayed as the good guy, the underdog that deserves redemption, and who can be presented as an even worse villain than he was? The audience must have reasons to get behind one of them and hate the other. If this fight would happen in 1986 (during the cold war), they would be forced to transform Clubber Lang into an American hero and to make Drago an even more dangerous representative of the communist threat to the free world. If the fight would take place just after Creed 2 (with Drago being redeemed), there would be no way of presenting Drago as the bad guy. They would have to make Clubber Lang some dangerous and ruthless gang leader (maybe a magnified version of Mitch Green - as the characters of Rocky and much of the dialog are copied from real life boxing).
If the fight would happen now (with the war in Ukraine), Drago would have to turn to Mother Russia and be the villain again (and loose again).
3. From the point of view of the screenwriter, obviously Drago was the best boxer Rocky has ever faced. He was created as a superhuman figure, a mountain impossible to climb that Rocky climbs anyway.
First, Rocky does the impossible and finishes the fight against Apollo on his feet. In the second movie, he does something even more extraordinary by defeating Apollo and becoming champion. In the third movie he stand his ground with a 7’ wrestler and defeats a great puncher by reinventing himself (he changes his style completely - this is the first time that Rocky shows boxing skills). So, basically, in Rocky 3, Rocky fights against himself (and wins).
Where can he go from there? Only up, obviously. So, what does he do in Rocky 4. He defeats a superhuman, a representative of the communist threat to the entire free world. In doing so, he makes believers even of the soviet leaders. The fact that Drago is a much better fighter than Rocky and then all his previous opponents is underlined clearly by having him effortlessly killing Apollo Creed. Now Rocky has to reinvent himself again, to get to a way higher level than were he previously was (previously, he was equal to Creed, better than Lang).
4. A real boxing match between Dolph Lundgren and Mr. T in their prime
Mr. T is being presented as a great bouncer, but listening to the nonsense that he says about his activity in this field, it is obvious that a lot of the staff is fabricated. Also, it is obvious that he has absolutely no boxing skills. Even if he was a great street fighter (and there’s no evidence for that, because, in fact, he never had trouble with the law), in the ring he would have little chance against an amateur boxer of his size. Of course, Dolph is not his size (Dolph is 6’5”, Mr. T is 5’10’). On the other hand, he’s not an amateur boxer either. Yes, he fought in karate tournaments, but that’s not boxing. If you watch his karate fights, his skills are horrible for boxing matches (he doesn’t control distance well - which should be his main advantage).
As far references, we have Dolph’s boxing match with Taktarov, as well as the boxing/wrestling exhibition between Mr. T and Rowdy Piper. Both of them looked bad…
So, based on the physical attributes and fighting experience, you might be inclined to give the victory to Dolph (on points, if the match is of no more than 3 rounds, by KO if it’s 4 rounds). However, there’s a good chance for the match finishing as a No contest or with a double disqualification, with both fighters refusing to fight because of exhaustion.
Ivan Drago wins hand down. Both power fighters, but reach, speed and endurance goes to Ivan.

Both fantastic movie boxers, i’ll take Drago to knockout Clubber fairly early. Clubber has big time power, but the size technique steroids and skill will all come to destroy the wild hooks. The power of Clubber is nullified by the Russians power and without having a power advantage everything else is in favor of Drago.
Agree. Drago has advantage in size and stamina and while Lang delivers insanely strong hits with really fast pace he runs out of steam fast. If Drago survives two rounds of Lang coming at him with full power (and Lang will do that) he has won and just needs to hammer Lang out. To win Lang must get past Drago's reach and smash him in first rounds.

@@Remy4722 Maybe, but i look at it and think Rocky was not training to his full potential in the first Lang fight. He got comfortable easily beating people and lost his edge and training methods. The only reason he beat Drago in their first and only encounter is because he recaptured that magic that he lost by Rocky 3 and he was fighting for his best friend and country. Switch Drago and Clubber in 3 and the results would have been the same in the first fight

@@TheJimmyswe150 It is mentioned for being there and very formidable. Balboa had to learn to box with completely different way to defeat Lang. Drago was immensely strong with huge reach, but Lang was strong, fast and mobile.
Just looking at characters I bet on bigger guy, but Lang has about 0,4 odds of winning. It all goes down to first rounds, Lang hits hard, fast and his brawling style might be confusing to more scientifically fighting Drago. How Drago is at the end of 2nd round tells how it ends. If he is faltering Lang will knock him out in 4th wearing him down in 3rd and if Drago is standing firm he will simply smash Lang in 5th. Lang lacks stamina, but can take a punch.

I choose Clubber Lang. If Rocky could get to him, Lang would definitely get to him and do way more damage early. Clubber Lang was tough too and could take a punch. And Clubber hit harder than Rocky. Drago uses his jab but it's not enough. He's not nearly as aggressive as he is with Rocky because of Clubber Lang's power so he circles the ring.. He cuts Drago early and drops him in the fourth or fifth round. I understand that Drago has more skill, but Clubber was a seasoned heavyweight with decent power, an attitude, and a good chin and he was hungry. Clubber Lang wins by KO in the fourth or fifth round.

Clubber Lang "before Rocky III" would have had a better chance of being able to go 5+ rounds against Ivan Drago -- than Clubber post-Rocky III. Unlike Apollo Creed, Clubber never would have "half assed" his training prior to "any" fight. Post-Rocky IV, after seeing Creed get beaten to death, Clubber likely would have been even more dedicated to his training in a fight against Drago, than if Creed had never faced Drago. Clubber could always "hit harder" than Rocky Balboa could, and therefore every one of Clubber's punches would do more damage to Drago than Rocky's punches did. Rocky beat Drago because he "wore him out" and landed a sufficient volume of punches. Whereas, Clubber had less stamina than Rocky, but significantly more powerful punches than Rocky did. A Clubber Lang, in his prime years, fighting at 100% would have won at least 1 round against Ivan Drago, if not 2, but ultimately, I think that Drago would have prevailed, but NOT killed Clubber in the ring.
