    Well done! Take it from someone who retired 12 years ago at 44; you won’t regret it. I bike, swim, lay in hammock reading, take wife to leisurely lunch and hang out with grandkids 4 houses away. You won’t regret your decision.

    I am certain you will know that it was the right decision to undertake this exciting family adventure as you progress along the Great Loop, although I am also certain there will days when everything goes haywire and you will wonder why you ever thought doing the Great Loop was a good idea! I'm close to retirement but much older than you. I didn't have all the great advice when I was younger but I kicked it into high gear in my 50's and will be just fine when I do retire.

      Hi Paul! That's so cool you found this video! Yes, FPU got us on track to pull all of this off. We were just interviewed for a podcast and they asked what we recommend and we started right there at the baby steps. Congrats on nearing your retirement. Sharing our story (especially with young people) is part of our mission. The power of compound interest and the freedom you feel when you have no payments can't be beat! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    Been watching your videos for a few months now Just sporadically here and there while doing research for the loop.
    While I'm just a couple years younger it really is inspiring to hear your story.
    I work a 3&3 schedule, so that's our plan. 3 weeks of boat, then 3 of work. And I travel for work, so we think it's doable. Guess we are gonna find out. Lol
    We are kind of doing this for health reasons. While we aren't retiring, we are gonna do the adventure anyway.
    I've got a brain tumor, and my wife has MS. So we are living a retirement life before we retire. If that makes sense. We are both healthy enough now to do this, and honestly we don't have any sort of terminal diagnoses. So it's not doom and gloom. Just an adjustment.
    Almost debt free. Almost. And have a smaller nestegg, but we will make it work.
    Glad I saw this video recommendation. Makes a lot of sense of how and why you are doing this adventure. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
    Thank you. Fair wishes and good health are being sent your way.

    Congratulations on taking the leap into retirement at your age, best wishes. I'm 59 and over the years I dished out 633k for my 3 sons colleges. All three graduated with zero college debt from private colleges(loyola university, DePaul university, and Northwestern University).
    I'm curious as to what your plan is for you kids college tuition? Also what is your plan for health insurance? Your video just popped up so this is the first video I saw on your channel.

    Funny how everyone has a different perspective on what a rewarding retirement will look like. You are looking forward to retiring so you can take a long journey in a boat - I am looking forward to retiring so I can hang out in my garage all day and tinker on old cars!
    Last week I hit my 25-year anniversary with a company that has gone through a very painful reorganization which completely changed the corporate culture over the last few years. Lost many close coworkers in the process. Have a shade over four years to go before I can move on to my second career as an automotive enthusiast - but who’s counting…….😂
    I would think your profession would allow for short term contract work if you ever hit a tight spot - might actually be fun to go back to the grind for specific projects knowing it is only temporary! Good luck……..👍

    Don't worry about missing the problem solving, you own a boat now and are about to go traveling with your family. You will be solving problems every hour, on some days even more. You're leaving work for all the right reasons. It will take you about a year but once you've covered that period of time you'll never look back. You will continue to gain more confidence in yourself everyday. Quitting work is the best thing I've ever done.

    Very thoughtful of you to give them 12 weeks notice - speaks to your character. Have a question - did you ever have "one more year" syndrome, where you could have FIRE'd earlier but kept creating reasons in your head to work for one more year. I've been dealing with that for the past few years. Perhaps having the lymphoma allowed you to crystallize your decision making process so you could pull the trigger without delay. Good luck to you.

    • @onFIREfamily
      @onFIREfamily  2 года назад +2

      My nature would totally be to have “one more year syndrome.” I get it! The math just seems better and lower risk, financially, that way. Two things though: 1) Health. Yes, mine in particular, but I’ve seen far too many hard workers retire with plenty and then last a year or two before health dashes their retirement dreams. I didn’t want that. 2) Kids. They are only kids for so long. Doing this now while my oldest is a sophomore was a big time push. I was uprooted during high school and didn’t want to impact her friend network during her junior year (making senior year that much more difficult).
      Do the math. If you have the means, do it NOW! I keep telling myself if I’m wrong and the math wasn’t totally right I can always work later. You just can’t buy back your health or time with your family. Best of luck to you on your journey!

    You said your money is in 401Ks and IRAs - well you must have money in taxable too because those funds cant be touched without penalty until 59 1/2 so you have 13 years to bridge. Unless of course you are doing 72T.

    Just curious... Now, I love what I do and want to keep doing it as long as possible.. does everyone here hate what they did so much and your work that you just couldn't wait to be done? That sounds like a horrible way to live your life. Wouldn't it be better to actually find something rewarding and interesting so that you can actually have a long and lustrous career? What I'm reading here is that most Americans are so dissatisfied with their work lives that they start trying to retire as early as possible. How is this any kind of victory...

    • @onFIREfamily
      @onFIREfamily  Год назад

      I’m sure others will weigh in but for me it’s a matter of losing the predictability of my health and not having the time freedom to do the things I wanted to do (whether I loved my job or not). I completely agree with you that if you’re going to devote as much time as a career involves to something, you should pick something you love (or change while you can). Thanks for the comment.
