Amazing, you are so wonderful and inspiring! I chosed my first ukulele today and can't wait for it to be delivered, so I can finally start practicing. This is one of my favorite folk songs! Thank you for you chanel and all things you do :)
Great tune - never heard it before today. I’ve always enjoyed songs about trains and train travel. Of course, I have a story.... When I was a young man, I had the pleasure of meeting my grandfather’s cousin, Ray Lyle. He was probably in his 70’s at that time. He told me the stories of his life during the depression making a living as a boxer. He traveled the eastern part of the US by freight train, stopping at various towns and fighting the locals. He considered himself a hobo, and was not a paying customer on those trains. I was fascinated. He lived in Florida at the time, and decided to take a bus trip to Pennsylvania to visit my grandpa. He never thought to tell the nursing home where he lived that he was leaving. He just returned there two weeks later. I think of him often, every time I have butter pecan ice cream (his favorite) and today, when I listened to video. Thanks for the memory!
Brilliant love this song I used a different finger picking pattern for this but I’m going to practice yours it brings a whole new sound around the song
I appreciate that! Happy to be at 52K! I could use all the help I can get! Feel free to share any and all of my videos with your music and ukulele loving friends. Please use the hashtag #ukulelezen
Stu, you are such a skilled musician that sometimes I can't tell where you end and where the ukulele begins! (Did I ever tell you how happy you make me?)Thanks for sharing your music with us!
Stu this is great thanks I always wanted to play this song! This style reminds me of claw hammer slightly, which is how I started playing banjo and them uke. As I was playing this I found myself switching back to my index finger rather than my thumb. I gotta keep practicing. Thanks
Yeah Alex, it’s got a similar Santa Clara hammer… This is a great technique and I’ll be sure to mention it in future videos. Some people call it “cherry picking “… Meaning that you’re choosing to pick out certain melodic notes within the court as in a cherry picker 😉 Play on Amigo! Hope we meet up someday in person at a festival or one of my retreats
That's GREAT! Mission accomplished Roylin. That's exactly what I was hoping would happen...hats off to you. I'm working on a new jazzy intro video by the way...be well, Stu
Great song Stu. By the way I have that same ukulele. Brian made one for me after he made your. Mine has a horse head where yours has a yin and yang....otherwise identical and a dream to play. Although I play nowhere close to you!
Hey there - I was just told about your Uke from Brian....enjoy & if you're a patron, please post a pic to the Patreon Page of UZ on FB! facebook.com/ukulelezen/
Hey!!! Here is an 84 year old enjoying your stuff. I'm purchasing a tenor. But tell your baritone guys to capo at the 5th fret and play tenor on the baritone. Works for me. What do I get for $2/ month?
Thanks Gene...I play the "six string baritone" if you know what I mean :) $2 per month get you access to PDS tabs in jam tracks to play along with. Read more at www.patreon.com/ukulelezen Thanks & play on! Mazel Too of 84 times around the Sun!
Stu: can I buy the tablature for this as a one off without joining Patreon? I am a leftie and can’t afford to commit to Patreon every month. I already play Freight Train and would like to extend my style.

At the height of the skiffle boom in the 50s Freight Train was a huge hit in the UK. Chas Mc Devitt and Nancy Whisky if memory serves. Great song.
Thanks for sharing that history! It's so important to trace the thread of who, how & where these songs have been re-interpreted...Cheers, Stu
Also, a bit later Freight Train was a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary (also know as 'beard, beard and bra')
