- Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh chat to Mike Gibson on WWOS in 1987 on the back of the book 'Ten Turbulent Years'. The pair talk about World Series cricket, Viv Richards, Max Walker and pour cold water on Kim Hughes' captaincy. Video tape skips a few bits but there's plenty here to enjoy.
Those were the days my friend! RIP Rod Marsh. Thank you to Kerry Packer.
RIP Rod Marsh. A pioneer as a keeper/batsman. Instead of being just a great keeper, he made runs as well.
Dennis Lillee praise of Viv Richards really says it all.
He called him the best batter he bowled to ahead of Garfield Sobbers and all greats he bowled to and went on to say that ''Viv was the supreme player''...,,,Lillee doesn't toss it around for anyone really especially back in the day.
@@kunalsingh3121 Yes! The fact that Lillee says that any time you saw the backside of Viv was a relief and not really any particular time speaks to the greatness of the man.
See how people used to talk back in the day. No interruptions.
Rod speaks his mind he's no mug, what he didn't know about cricket you could write on the back of the a 50 pence stamp, RIP.
Rod Marsh should have got a Knighthood for wearing that jumper
Agreed
Thank you for this rare gem
That jumper that seemed so right at the time coming back to haunt him
Two excellent and likeable sportsmen...
He kicked Miandad who could be a real pain in the arse.
I haven't watched cricket since these guys packet it in
Although Marsh and Lillee never went out of their way to make life easy for Hughes, they do have the balls to be honest about their opinion of him as captain. And this was only a couple of years after Hughes has resigned as captain. These days players never really give an honest opinion.
I always liked Hughes, I wish he had received more support.
Two absolute legends of the game god bless marshy and lillee marshy lillee kill kill kill kill.
I wish had received more support. And his knows we needed Kim Hughes in 85-86 In particular.
But the Board must bear some responsibility in thrusting him into the leadership role post wsc.
Honesty?? LOL!! There was nothing wrong with Hughes' captaincy. The entire rift was caused by Hughes staying with the ACB whilst the Chappells, Lillee and Marsh went over to Packer. Hughes captained Australia 7 times while the split happened and was very cosy with the ACB which completely rankled the Packer boys. Lillee and Greg Chappell went out of their way to make Hughes' life a misery, and Ian Chappell constantly sledged him in the media. Hughes had two Test series with Lillee. The 1981 Ashes tour of England was lost 3-1. Aus was up 1-0 going into the 3rd test match, which Lillee and Marsh actually bet against Aus winning. Aus then lost the 3 out of 4 of the rest of the matches, with a rampant Botham leading the charge and Brearley captaining the Eng side. At home against Pak Aus won comfortably. There was nothing remotely honest about either Lillee or Marsh's assessment of Hughes' captaincy in this video, just pure ego.
RIP Rod Marsh...😔🇦🇺
This interview is so rare that it's been on RUclips for nearly 3 years and available for anyone to watch. It's a little sad how desperate people are in trying to make they're crappy, badly edited RUclips videos interesting...
Moustache... Thats the symbol mate !!!
Ironically the match where Dennis is talking about Viv, is where Kim Hughes made a hundred. WI were 4/10 at the end of the first day, Boxing Day MCG.
Those moustaches didn't mess around in those days.
You can have your Healy’s and Gilchrist’s, but for me, Rod Marsh will forever be Australia’s greatest ever wicketkeeper.
Does anyone have any details surrounding the book that was mentioned?
For me, the best was always Jack Blackham.
@@stupendous1068 you must be old if you saw him keep..
Looking back it now I think Lillie was very bitter that Kim got the captaincy over Marsh hence made life hard for him. Ok so don’t blame Kim. But yes Alan Border was a fantastic replacement. He actually was my favorite player. I never read books but my wife bought me Allan Borders Biography in I think it was 2001 not long after he retired or before hehe . Anyway the book was awesome telling a lot stories of of what the boys got up to. Well worth the read. Timmy Zura the gloves are off is a good read to. He tells a few truths of why he couldn’t get on the team lol 😂.
Anyway it’s a sad sad day as our WA cricketing legend, wicket keeper/ Batsman has passed away today at the age of 74. I have a lot of respect for Rod as he didn’t like the fact that we bowled that grubber against the kiwis in that one day match back in the day. He was going don’t do it mate, don’t do it!!
Another thing he went over to pommy land and helped out the poms as they were in disarray and blow me down the poms came back and we’re very successful. To be honest I was sick of our ozzy lads winning under Steve War era. It just got boring because like there was no contest. We had at the time the most talented players ever to play the game at the time I think. So it was great to see the poms fight back and make cricket competitive again. Rest In Peace Rodney Marsh. You will never be forgotten mate.
Costa at 4:23 it cuts out when Lillee was talking about the Miandad incident. Was that a Channel 9 cut, or did you edit that part or what happened?
Channel 9 edit.
Who edited this? Seemed like bits were cut out for no reason.
It's from an old video. It's been noted by the author.
And you guys destroyed Kim's carrier
Those were the days. Big money has killed cricket.
Australians are to blame.
@@shubhamlele5395 ...and the BCCI
@@newellharry176 for what? They didn't start WSC? BCCI didn't start limited overs Cricket. BCCI didn't bring in the broadcast revolution like wwos and channel 9 with packer did. Australians started it,we simply consumed it.

RIP mate 🇦🇺💔🍺🥲
The eighties.
Great competitors who absolutely mastered their trades. Can't same the same about their sportsmanship. I reckon Rod Marsh would've gotten the captaincy if he didn;'t drink 45 beers on a flight to London. May have been a bit of snobbery. Mind you he should've gotten it. Then Dennis would not have psychologically tormented Kim. Ultimately it was the board's mistake. Border saved the day.
Boonie mate
I think the current players would be too soft to talk down Cummins as captain today.
Yes Rod marsh was angry that he was not given the captaincy after Greg Chappell stood down from it and he and Lillee did do everything they could to undermine Kim Hughes. The fault lays at both the Australian cricket board andLillee and Marsh's feet on this one. It was too early for Kim to be captain (Lillee was right about that) but the ACB had rarely if ever chosen a wicket-keeper to captain Australia. This was only 4 years after they both retired but the undercurrent of the interview still shows they were blackballing him then as well.
Kim Hughes and his missus downvoted this
The spate of heart attacks this past year is disturbing. What's causing them?
Cholesterol
Man they laid into Hughes. But he was pushed into the vice captain role and the captain role way too soon.
I view my heroes very differntly now as an older person than i did as a young man.the crap kim hughes copped as captain was bullshit from others that had had their day and should have realised it.alan wouldnt have taken that crap.
Lillee and Marsh as good as they are and were, they are the greats but there lack of support to Kim Hughes was just plan poor.
It was because as fellow state members, they didn't rate him captain material. Cant bag them for that.
@@graemealexander8804 read my comment again did I bag them know I said they are greats but what I did say is there treatment of Hughes was wrong and that should be noted perhaps learn to read comments first before commenting
@Hazman marsh it’s rods grandson
wtf did Lillee say about Miandad in the interview? its been cut out for no reason
Rod Marsh calling Hughes "Kimberley" lol
rod marsh saying no one should want the captaincy, when all he did was bitch and moan with his mob mates once he didnt get it -> lol
What a piss weak response to the ? about Hughes
paul cleary are u from allied express
paul cleary Hughes really was that bad as a captain until Border took over.

Why cut out the bit about Javed Miandad? He's got a lot to answer for there. Frankly, having had plenty of exposure to the attitudes of Anglo Australians of that generation, I'll have no doubt, until proven otherwise, that he'd never have done that if Javed was white. Disgusting act.
FWIW, just found this:
www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/486739.html
Frankly I'll believe Miandad on this one, the footage is there for all to see. And I can well imagine the Australians spent the whole series "mimicking" the Pakistani accents, and saying the sorts of things that would get you banned from any office in Australia today. Other than the ones operated by the Young Liberals.
Just relax..no need to insert racism into every story mate..
