  • Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh chat to Mike Gibson on WWOS in 1987 on the back of the book 'Ten Turbulent Years'. The pair talk about World Series cricket, Viv Richards, Max Walker and pour cold water on Kim Hughes' captaincy. Video tape skips a few bits but there's plenty here to enjoy.

    Although Marsh and Lillee never went out of their way to make life easy for Hughes, they do have the balls to be honest about their opinion of him as captain. And this was only a couple of years after Hughes has resigned as captain. These days players never really give an honest opinion.
    I always liked Hughes, I wish he had received more support.

      Honesty?? LOL!! There was nothing wrong with Hughes' captaincy. The entire rift was caused by Hughes staying with the ACB whilst the Chappells, Lillee and Marsh went over to Packer. Hughes captained Australia 7 times while the split happened and was very cosy with the ACB which completely rankled the Packer boys. Lillee and Greg Chappell went out of their way to make Hughes' life a misery, and Ian Chappell constantly sledged him in the media. Hughes had two Test series with Lillee. The 1981 Ashes tour of England was lost 3-1. Aus was up 1-0 going into the 3rd test match, which Lillee and Marsh actually bet against Aus winning. Aus then lost the 3 out of 4 of the rest of the matches, with a rampant Botham leading the charge and Brearley captaining the Eng side. At home against Pak Aus won comfortably. There was nothing remotely honest about either Lillee or Marsh's assessment of Hughes' captaincy in this video, just pure ego.

    Looking back it now I think Lillie was very bitter that Kim got the captaincy over Marsh hence made life hard for him. Ok so don’t blame Kim. But yes Alan Border was a fantastic replacement. He actually was my favorite player. I never read books but my wife bought me Allan Borders Biography in I think it was 2001 not long after he retired or before hehe . Anyway the book was awesome telling a lot stories of of what the boys got up to. Well worth the read. Timmy Zura the gloves are off is a good read to. He tells a few truths of why he couldn’t get on the team lol 😂.
    Anyway it’s a sad sad day as our WA cricketing legend,wicket keeper/ Batsman has passed away today at the age of 74. I have a lot of respect for Rod as he didn’t like the fact that we bowled that grubber against the kiwis in that one day match back in the day. He was going don’t do it mate, don’t do it!!
    Another thing he went over to pommy land and helped out the poms as they were in disarray and blow me down the poms came back and we’re very successful. To be honest I was sick of our ozzy lads winning under Steve War era. It just got boring because like there was no contest. We had at the time the most talented players ever to play the game at the time I think. So it was great to see the poms fight back and make cricket competitive again. Rest In Peace Rodney Marsh. You will never be forgotten mate.

    Great competitors who absolutely mastered their trades. Can't same the same about their sportsmanship. I reckon Rod Marsh would've gotten the captaincy if he didn;'t drink 45 beers on a flight to London. May have been a bit of snobbery. Mind you he should've gotten it. Then Dennis would not have psychologically tormented Kim. Ultimately it was the board's mistake. Border saved the day.

  • @CursoryMercenary

  • @honkydynamite
    @honkydynamite 2 года назад

    Yes Rod marsh was angry that he was not given the captaincy after Greg Chappell stood down from it and he and Lillee did do everything they could to undermine Kim Hughes. The fault lays at both the Australian cricket board andLillee and Marsh's feet on this one. It was too early for Kim to be captain (Lillee was right about that) but the ACB had rarely if ever chosen a wicket-keeper to captain Australia. This was only 4 years after they both retired but the undercurrent of the interview still shows they were blackballing him then as well.
