It’s so neat to see this video finally get released to the public after months and months of planning itineraries, researching diner histories, recording music, and a truly Herculean editing effort by Miles!!! It’s an honor to be featured in one of the opuses of Miles’s channel, and I’m so honored to have this beautifully produced record of our diner adventures!!!

"Who ya gonna call? GHOST BUS-STOP!" That killed me 💀Love the Bruce Springsteen energy from the Diner Factory song! All the music in this, from that to using the 101 trolley as a backdrop for The 71...pure art! Phenomenal job! Jackson's wealth of diner knowledge show combined with your wealth of transit knowledge show that diners are just as important to shaping American history as much as trains have! The great thing about this and the original Philadelphia diner one is you show the pros and cons of a region's transit coverage while also introducing the community to cool food spots to check out! Great for not just improving upon transit planning skills, but also helping these businesses!
Diners have a special place in my heart as while growing up in Westchester County NY, my dad's from Paterson and so he'd take me on long weekend road trips from Westchester to show me all the places he grew up going to, and thus I was exposed to many phenomenal NJ diners and roadside food spots in general whether it's the fabulous White Mana in Jersey City from the 1939 NY World's Fair, Pizza Town USA, or this 1939 Fair Lawn hot dog spot called Johnny & Hanges that once had a Nabisco factory (the factory was the largest producer of Oreos and operated from 1958 t0 2021) next to it and you smelled amazing cookies while eating your hot dogs. My dad passed when I was eight, so I'm very thankful he did all that for me.

On the Xcelsior where Jackson chose your least favourite seat, the partition piece in front of you was a result of some litigation after someone fell out of a seat. It's to prevent you from falling out of the seat. Transit agencies were notified of the litigation and some made changes to their existing bus interiors, others made changes to their future orders.

PCCs are love, PCCs are life, my mom grew up riding the Newark ones (which fun fact, they got their former PCCs from Minneapolis) and I'm jealous. And boats and goats by the Portside Diner, what more do you want? The reason goats have horizontal pupils is because they are prey, so it's for protection. Having a horizontal slit gives them a wider viewing area but it also increases the quality of the vision over a wider area, while reducing the amount of sunlight from above and glare from below. Many of the prey species which have those horizontal pupils tend to graze out in the open. Those animals also tend to have their eyes on the sides of the head rather than facing forward, again broadening their field of view.
I like the little touches of the Little Depot Diner with John Lennon guitar and the model train! That arepa burger at the Airport Diner is intriguing. There's a Cuban version of a burger too called the frita cubana. Mixed ground beef and chorizo patty with some fried potato sticks and a spicy sauce served on a nice Cuban roll. And the Mapparium is very interesting from a history perspective since it's from 1935 and has stuff like Belgian Congo, Korea when it was annexed by Japan, French Indochina, Manchukuo, and of course the Soviet Union. The architect Lindsay Churchill was inspired to design a globe to represent The Christian Science Monitor's global reach and was originally influenced by the spinning globe in the lobby of NYC's Daily News Building.

I just wanted to say this video really made my day. If you watch the video after Miles gets on the commuter rail in Framingham, he mentioned a guy named Justin who they met on the platform. That guy was me.
Miles, I don't get much shout outs in my life. It probably didn't mean anything to the 32k subscribers that frequent your videos, but it means the world to me.
That day still stands out in my memory, and to see that you solidified that encounter in your video makes me feel special in so many ways.
I will continue to watch your videos every wednesday, and every time I catch a train in my hometown of framingham I will think of the day that I met Miles, Jackson and Jaquelline.

Miles and Jackson doing a Taylor Swift acappella of Wonderland? Ah yes, 1989 (Miles's Version). Woburn got its name from the Woburn in Bedfordshire, England. Woburn played host to the first religious ordination in the Americas in November 1642...so that's something. The Charles River is named after Charles I because when John Smith of Jamestown mapped the New England coast, he called it the Massachusetts River and when Smith presented his map to King Charles I, he suggested that the king should feel free to change any of the indigenous names to English ones, and thus he named the Charles River after himself. The indigenous Massachusett named it Quinobequin, meaning "meandering" or "meandering still water".
Thai food is exceptional! The reason Thai restaurants are everywhere just like that Thai diner for example is basically as Thai food gained steam in the Western world, the Thailand government took note of this. And so in the early 2000s, they launched a program that would train Thai chefs and send them abroad to open new restaurants with the aim of promoting Thailand as a destination to visit through their cuisine. As part of that campaign, the government also attempted to standardize Thai restaurants and their menus, in hopes of making dishes like Pad Thai as synonymous with Thai culture as say, the Big Mac is with McDonald’s. A surprise to no one, this tactic worked.

    • @Decopunk1927
      @Decopunk1927 9 месяцев назад +1

The Charles River wasn't Charles' only renaming: he labelled a whole map. Four of his namings survive, the other three being Cape Anne, Cape Elizabeth, and Plymouth. One which did not stick was Cape James, which was what he called Cape Cod. I read this in an old book.

Hi Miles and Jackson, I just wanted to give a little support because of how fantastic this video is, like seriously fantastic. 3+ hours of transit and diners around Boston.... wow. I study at Berklee and it was really awesome to see you ride the 1 bus past there and I totally agree that Jackson could go here if he wanted :) All these diners seem wonderful and I have so many more places to explore and go to on my adventures, so seriously thank you for that. Another thing that is kindof blowing my mind is the fact that you recorded intermission 3 in Media PA... My mother grew up in springfield and her and my grandfather ran the Media theater from 1978-1988 and my mom practically grew up there. Seeing Jackson stand out front of the theater shocked me so much that I immediately facetimed my mom and showed her (I've shown my whole family your videos so they were all super shocked to see you there lol). She was flooded with emotions and the look on her face was so precious that I felt it was necessary to show my thanks with this paragraph. She has always talked about how back in the day, there was a section on the upstairs of theater that played foreign and indie films, and sadly that section has been removed since my grandfather sold it.

This was some of the most entertaining 3 hours I've spent, start to finish, on a YT video, maybe ever. It had everything. Travel, weather, finding out there's a channel like this with you guys being local to me (I live in the city mentioned over and over for building Dining Cars)... but I mean, multiple Wesley Willis moments, innuendo jokes, references I get, 80s movie song covers. The editing was an affirmative 10 out of 10, and I wouldnt say so if I didnt think it was "just" a 9. Oh and City Nerd. Yeah, I've been watching him for a long time. So finally the algorithm did its job. They offered me the chance to watch your 100+ hour Greyhound vid, and after that and several others, I scrolled up towards the new stuff, saw this, and normally I'd be like "Ooh, over three hours?! Sounds interesting, but idk if I have time for that, add to watch later" but NO! I consumed it all in one sitting, save for pause breaks. There was barely a dull moment throughout, which is crazy to think when compared to every other viewing option and all the content I watch. Seriously fantastic stuff, guys. Send your Worcester song to more people out this way. Get the "tape" on some desks! There aren't exactly many pop culture references to this city, and I'd bet some radio personality or whomever could adopt that as a theme song or at least play it a few dozen times. Jim Polito, Howie Carr, maybe Rich Keefe on WEEI. Anyways thanks for passing the last batch of hours and I really look forward to more.

"I thought you were gaslighting me, but there's an actual drawbridge". Chance of this phrase occurring in anything other than a Jackson and Miles video? 0.00000002%.

My thing with the Port Jervis Line is consistency! It has a couple really amazing moments, but the section through New Jersey is kind of a slog.

absolutely thrilled to see you praise my local diner (wilson's) so highly!! it's a waltham institution - i've been going since i was two, and it's still the same experience it's always been. for a few decades, the chef was a wonderful greek guy named arthur - i'm sad you didn't get to meet him, as his personality was a huge draw as well. great video!

This might be one of my favourite videos ever. I think a lot of the time people only think of prefab buildings as dreary, unadorned and unmemorable. These diners are completely different to that! I would love to visit a diner one day. I put off watching this for ages, beacuse it's so long, but it's such an epic project, I'm so glad I watched.

Best commuter rail line for scenery is in Boston? My favorite is Frontrunner rail by Utah Transit Authority. All trains are bilevel sets. From Ogden through Salt Lake City on to Provo, it follows the Wasatch Mountain Range. Take it in the winter when snow covers the Mountains. Can be accessed from the green above ground Trax line at the SLC airport.

The Port Jervis Line of the MNR with its wonderful Moodna Viaduct (which Miles rode with Jeremy in their longest commuter rail trip), the eastern half of the LIRR's Montauk Branch, LIRR's Greenport Branch, and the New Mexico Rail Runner are also great for scenery!

@@MilesinTransit If you come to Utah to ride Frontrunner in winter, please take a Transit side quest. Frontrunner to Ogden Central Station, transfer to bus 675 Snowbasin Ski Bus ($10 round trip), Arial gondola ($20) up to John Paul Lodge. 360 views and fantastic food. My favorite is Bavarian schnitzel, and beer bratwurst. 3 types of transport in a day. Be sure to do a bathroom review it will amaze.

this was truly art! i waited till new years day to watch this full through no stops loved every second, the cool thing for me about this one is i've never been to any of these places so it was truly new vs the should be award winning philadelphia diners video in which i recognized most of it due to being from and living in the area. @1:40:35 interesting tie in the #690 is the plumbers union local in philadelphia and southeastern pa where i did my 5 year apprenticeship and worked as a building trades plumber for 15 years until switching careers into municipal utility maintenance

Back in the 90s I used to go to Judy's Diner, which is now Crazy Good Kitchen (#18), all the time! It was really delicious and amazing vintage diner decor but very small, not a ton of seating as there was no extension. Sad to see what they've done to the place but glad for the memories from you featuring it here!

Fun fact about those MBTA trains build by MBB, the M in MBB stands for Messerschmitt, so those train cars are in some way the descendants of a german WW2 fighter plane.

Well since you stopped by Modern Diner in Pawtucket, a bit further south you could've visited Jigger's on Main St in East Greenwich. It's perpendicular to the street so you only see it on end, but I'm pretty sure you saw it while passing in a bus in a previous video (I'm just not sure which). You know RI is weird because our only/whole rail system is an overgrown tentacle of MA's. But it is the longest line on the MBTA commuter rail going all the way to North Kingstown.
