    I’ve been watching you for a while now (just never subscribed). I’ve been listening to Ian for ages and read most of his books. The combination is amazing and definitely triggered a subscribe (admittedly overdue). This is great stuff, keep mixing things like this into the general “let’s talk about finances” conversation, because it matters. Thanks!

    There are elements of the civil service who are experts in their field - but they are generally all at the bottom where influence is negligible. Those that do rise up often leave for industry because pay is often 3x higher and money talks.

    Excellent episode Damo and T. Really engaging guest. Made me think and confirm my own thoughts regarding our broken political and electoral system. We need to change and can learn a lot off countries like Norway. Oh how I wish the U.K. had set up a sovereign fund like them in the 70’s. The political elite need to see the bigger picture, prepare for tomorrow and not use the 🎱 when making their decisions for today!

    I love the dulcet tones of Ian Dunt. I first heard him on Late Night Live (ABC RN). He makes a lot of sense. It is a testament to how much collusion there is amongst the right wing in the US, UK and Australia, that the Tories, Republicans and Aus conservative coalition (Liberal and National Parties) have played to the same song sheet over the past 10 years of so (or even earlier and probably when they started to subscribe to Friedmanite, trickle down, neo-liberal economic theory). So many of the Tory policy and practices (such as they are) also occurred in Australia over the past 10 year of Coalition Government including the whittling down of members and ministers to the lowest forms of life in their parties.

    Enjoyed that Damo. He raises some really good points. As someone who works in the public sector myself, I can see first hand what he is getting at.... it's somewhat lions led by donkeys at times! Not entirely true as there are some really good, competent people who get promoted sometimes, however in at least 50% of cases they are just people who are good at networking and meetings and who often continue to avoid any of the core operational functions of what we do as they know they will otherwise get found out. Think this is rife across all civil services roles.

    This was a really clear headed assessment of the country and the people and systems that run it.
    Excellent guest gents.
    I think simplifying tax, and even putting it up to northern European levels in exchange for excellent public services is okay provided it provides value for money.
    The big issue is the absolute lack of a long term strategy.. and the lack of incentive for those walking in to it.. as a new governing party to carry it on.. the system needs to incentivise that consistency and follow through on strategic plans.. should be written into law and maybe even pay a ministers dividend on managing to progress it further and so on…

    Government contracts do have to go out to tender. But nearly always the cheapest bid must be chosen. There is no protectionism; something that the UK stupidly considers shameful and yet, for example, USA are proud of (which economy is doing better?). (We nearly contracted the Chinese to build a nuclear power plant in our country a few years ago!!! I mean, talk about utterly idiotic.) What is often not involved in the selection process is any grip on reality of the project life or any realistic evaluation of how much it should cost. The chosen contractor, a few years in, simply says that, oh-what-a-surprise, costs are much higher than expected so you will need to pay more. Who could have seen that coming? The alternative is a complete halt to the process so you lose face because the project has been a complete waste of time and money (and the contractor tries to sue the government because the contract was written so badly that there was no protection for the government). The better value for money contractor could have been the one not chosen at the time of tender simply because they gave a more realistic cost. The civil servants and temp ministers are incompetent and do not want any responsibility so responsibility is contracted out, including the due diligence. They have no idea over specification details or quality because nobody with any competence has authority or incentive, leaving it open for the winning bidder, who, in contrast, is the experienced professional, to take them for a ride. It makes the tendering process ineffective e.g. all the failed government IT projects. The British arrogance of wanker temp politicians often prevents the competence of underlings (or experiences from other countries) from being used. And vain, arrogant CEO-failures are the only ones that want the job and can survive the constant barrage of attack from rivals and the media as they wade up through politics. It's a tricky one.

    I am not sure I understand he answered why a government that's been given a mandate to govern would be shy/lazy/reluctant to make big reforms in something fundamentally broken like the tax system? Why tf are we voting for a new party if that same party will be reluctant to make major reforms to things that are affecting us adversely? Where is the bold, visionary leadership in this country? What are they in Downing Street for then? Sounds to me that the country is falling apart at the seams and we are being told that we must contend with a centrist Labour govt doing some minor tweaks to dismal policies that we all see don't work. Frustrating at best!

    • @PeterHitchmanYT
      @PeterHitchmanYT 3 месяца назад

      As far as i know Labour is not campaining with this as a goal, even though everyone knows the tax system is a mess. The Greens have some policy statements out that say they want ot make the tax system as "simple as possible". I think any changes are going to have to be gradual, to achieve the long term goal of a simpler tax system. Everything Ian said about short termism in Govt makes me doubt it will ever happen.

    If you like this you should have a read of Dominic Cumming's Substack
    This guest has an anti-Brexit bias which tars his analysis a bit and his is obviously pro-Labour as if they would improve the system 😂
    The problem is the system itself. As he highlights we need significantly more capable people in the civil service and in parliament, creating the right incentives for that to happen such as pay.
    Also why is the state so involved in everyone's lives? Is part of the problem that it's trying to do too much and is stretched? Perhaps we need a leaner and more focused state, letting the people have more responsibility for their own lives!

    As a civil servant and been in the same role for years, I disagree with being painted the same as the rest. There are many that come into the civil service that do indeed, move on within a short period of time but deep specialist knowledge in niche areas require staff to remain in post for years to gain the experience for delivery of services. Civil servants are the best at what they do and run the country as well as can be expected within timeframes promulgated by the incumbent government.

    • @pipobscure
      @pipobscure 3 месяца назад +1

      You do realise that you have proven the point though: the incentive is to move so that you get promoted. You have stayed where you are and not been promoted. Now I applaud you for trying to build up expertise and sticking to civil service; but you weren’t being painted the same as the rest. You are literally the exception that proves the rule.
