Cannakkale: Islam's Forgotten Legacy

Today March 18th marks the commemoration of the battle of Çannakkale (Battle of Gallipoli). This video is a tribute to the martyrs of Çannakale. Here Sheykh Lokman Efendi Hz talk about his visit to the battle ground and how it felt over there. He describes the it as a battle of Islam and not just a battle for one nation. It was not about one country or homeland, it was about Khilafat and the whole world trying to bring the Khilafat down. He recalls the account of a group of Indian Muslims who refused to fight against the Khalifah and were shot dead by the British. He emphasizes the need for the Muslims to honor the martyrs of Çannakale. They were fighting for the Prophet AS.

As a person from the west it is interesting to hear about the ottoman perspective of the First World War.
However as a historian I do question the “invasion from the west”/“defence of Islam” narrative since the ottoman empire was allied with the Austrian and German empire, the side that started the First World War.
