    This video has given me more information and explanation than 6 hours on google and other youtube videos. I bought a set of relays from Amazon that did not state they were 5 pins so I've been trying to see if there's any way to avoid a return and use them as an SPST. Thank you for the video, it has helped tremendously.

    One thing I would like to see on your video is to advise viewers to mount this relays with the mounting tab on top. Most imported relays are not water tight and can short out of fail with ease if mounted in any other direction. Great video and excellent explanation. 👍

    This was what I have been looking for. I've watched so many youtube videos and they all recommended 5 pin and all I am doing is lights...so I bought 5 pin and have had the toughest time trying to figure out what the darn thing does and why my switches are powered upside down...this video was perfect. The one question I do have that may be answered in the comments, but didn't see it right off the bat, was what do I do with the extra wire now? Do I leave it? do I cut it? Do I cap it? Appreciate your guidance. Thanks again for a great video!!

    Good video. I usually use 5 pins even though I know I don’t need to. I honestly barely can find a decent 4 pin from a reputable brand. It never hurts to have the 5th pin so I just use them 99% of the time.
    Actually just did a project using the rare 87A. I have a daytime running light on my truck that is powered by an ignition circuit. Interrupted it with a 5 pin relay triggered by the parking brake ground. Parking brake to 85, ign to 86, ign to 87A, 30 to DRL. pull brake, DRL shuts off when the relay switches to 87. Works like a champ.

It won't start and I want to try to a repair I'd seen on a forum where the mechanic grounded the relay to the strut tower of the car. Hi Chris,
    Great video with helpful explanations. Your videos on relays are the only ones that englightened me. I'm less than a novice on relays as I have never worked with them and only became aware of their exsitence few days ago, but I would like to learn how to use them on cars. In both this video and your other one titled "the automotive RELAY explained...", did you assume two power sources for the two circuits: one for the 85 - 86 circuit and another for the 30 - 87? It seems that you used two power sources in the other video on air conditioner, but I am not sure on this one. As far as I understand, personal cars only have one power source. In this case, would you need same gauged wires for both circuits?

  • @HamRocTrans
    @HamRocTrans 5 месяцев назад +1

    A 5 pin relay (SPDT) is required if you need an open circuit while the relay is being powered. When power is off the relay will switch to N/C. This would be used if you want something to turn on when the power to relay is off.

    I'm by no means an expert but from the research I've done, a 5 pin relay is essential for applications you need to power 2 different accessories like high/low beams.
    A 5 pin can constantly power low beams until the solenoid (electromagnetic coil) has current from switching on your high beams which magnetically pulls the iron switch to the second circuit which turns off the other.
    Relays 4 or 5 pin types allow many car parts to operate without drawing high Amps because the electromagnetic coil doesn't require high current while things like pumps, electric fans require high current to properly operate. So those parts don't burn out, instead the relay does and it protects the expensive components.
    Only $10 for a relay, $100 for a fan.
    It's also important to have a fuse between the high power + line (battery/JB) and the relay and all components after.

The gauge has a 12v to battery, 12v from a switch, ground and another wire for when you turn on your lights it dims the gauge. Can I use a 4 pin for this? hi Chris great videos I just have a question for you as i hooked up a five pole relay the way you said to but am wondering if I just leave 87a not hooked to anything? I installed a bumper that had 4 led lights in it . hooked 86 to my head lights 87 to my led's ran a 12gauge wire from 30pin straight to the battery with a 10amp fuse then ran pin 85 and led ground to chasey ground . but the lights come on right away without anything turned on. when I do turn ignition on and put high beams on the led lights shut off and work correctly the way I thought they should but they stay on when i turn ignition off. i just left 87a not hooked to anything. thanks for your time Chris hope to hear back from you soon .cheers

    Hi Chris, I’m doing relays for my headlights on my 69 charger, I’ve been researching a lot and thought I could go with 2, 4 pin relays for low and high instead of 5 pin like some of the videos I’ve seen because non of them used the 87a pin. But in your video you use a 4 pin and 5 pin, why is that, and is that what I should do and how would that get wired? I’m running separate power wires to each relay with a separate fuse for each relay. I will splice into the high beam wire for one relay and low beam wire for the other relay. I do want to do separate circuits in case the low or highs went out for some reason, old car wiring/connectors if you know what I mean. Lol

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  2 года назад +1

      that’s how all modern cars wire them.. one 4 pin and one 5 pin.. you don’t need to wire them separate.. I would have a video on this out but I’m not working on the old car right now.. I have the new lights and everything ready. you need to really think your project through before you do stupid things.. you can use your existing power wires going to old lights to turn on the relays.. wire them separate but not necessary in any way

      @The01Bookie 2 года назад

      @@chriscraft77022 thank you I’m asking questions because I want to do it right plus to remove the load on the switch and dimmer. Will your way be using the 5 pin on the low beam and using it to turn on the 4 pin for high beam, or will the 5 pin be used second and control both the low and high beam, or some other configuration, if there is another. So instead of using battery power direct from the battery on pin 30, I can use the low beam wire to power the relay if so would that go to 30 and 86 or power direct from the switch to 30?

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  2 года назад +1

      @@The01Bookie no... mount the 2 relays by the headlights.. low beam power wire goes to 86 on the 4 pin.. 87 from the 4 pin goes to 30 on the 5 pin... so the high beam power wire goes to 86 on the 5 pin.. there are many many diagrams on this because all cars are wired like that from the factory..

    Thanks for the video!!! I have a couple questions, may be stupid questions but nonetheless idk...
    1. Using the diagram at 4:18 of this video, if the qtip is at 87a and you DO NOT have anything wired at 87a, will your battery die? My guess would be no.
    2. Is there a certain amperage that needs to go to 86? If I were to use a "fuse tap" on an existing accessory that turns on, only when the car is on (like an accessory that gets power from ignition) would that be enough?
    3. If it says 30, that goes from battery straight to the relay , is that the max amperage this relay can withstand?
    Thank you in advance. I installed a universal power window kit on my friends 88 chevy truck. Pulling bout 500hp. I only used a rocker switch. He got so much shit hooked up as is with gauges etc. But he killed his battery by forgetting to turn off the switch. I'm looking for another way. Without taping into the ignition wire.

    Very Good job of explaining using a diagram. What I was looking for is the reason that some relays with 5 pin are stated they are for a 1976 Corvette blower motor when the original was a 4 pin. I received a 5 pin but don't have a high speed on my 1976 Corvette I have been restoring, but the original one was just 4 pin. The single one on the 4 pin is for ground but the 5 pin I received dose not identify ground on the two pins if any. Just wondering if that its the reason of having no high speed blower on it and knowing which pin that ground was suppose to go on if at all. The resister is new and all the other speeds work but high with this 5 pin relay.

    I am using a relay to install a rearview camera. Do I run the wire from 86 to my accessory wire when I turn on my key. I think I can but just wanted to make sure. Thank you Levi J DeVerney.

      yes.. but you don’t need a relay for a camera. why can’t you just run that “on with key” wire to power the camera..? I have a back up camera video, btw

      usually you would run thicker wire to compensate for the voltage drop... is the camera like a high quality HD or something? because if it is just a normal cheap back up camera you do not need a relay for that.. unless you camera is pulling 10 amps for some strange reason

    Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. I do have a question, and wording it may be difficult, so here it is:
    If the 5 pin is wired like a 4 pin and the switch (pin 86) is off (resulting 87a to pass the current), is it correct to say that power will NOT be drawn from the battery (pin 30) if 87a is open/not connected to anything?

    • @chriscraft77022

      it will NOT draw power

    Chris Craft wanted to see if you can help. I have Polaris Ranger with cab heater that has quit working. I used a test light to determine the relay needed to be replaced. I put on new relay checked positive with test light and it works but when I check the wire (87) going to the heater control panel there isn’t any power. Any ideas? Thanks in advance fo any help.

    Hi
    Thanks for the great explanation. Can you please explain the way a 1966 Lincoln Continental rear window 5 pin relay works. It is super confusing and I want to know if I can replace with a modern 5 pin relay.
    Thanks again.

    Great video....... I still need help. I want to wire an Air Horn that I want to work a several ways.
    I know how to wire with a relay to allow the Air horn to work off my stock Horn button.
    I would also at times like to break that connection so it does not work off the stock horn
    I would also like to have a separate switch that works all the time not dependent on being connected to my stock horn.
    What is the best way to do this...... Thank You

    The cost difference between the 4-pin and 5-pin relays are quite minimal, particularly particularly if you are purchasing a 6-pack or more. If you have both relay types incorporated in your vehicle, camper or boat, there is an advantage to using the 5-pin relays, since all relay applications use the same relay. I keep one spare 5-pin relay in my vehicle glove box to replace any failed 4 or 5 pin relay in an emergency.

    Why would a 5 pin relay be used on rear wiper? I wouldn't imagine it needs power all the time. It does have a delay when it's on, perhaps that would explain why? Thanks for any thoughts

    Hello Chris - have you got letter referencing for Hella relays? I have a P and an S on my headlight washer relay which I know is not working but would like to remove the cover and test. and have the facility to do it in the future. I have the European DIN chart numbers from 1 to 88 and the wiring colour codes for European DIN standard. There is a 72 page pdf file on Hella relays by Hella but not letters P or S. Thanks.
