      I didn't even realize there was a whole controversy with Dream. Even now, after it was discussed I could honestly still care less about it. I still enjoyed the video since it was a bunch of computer nerds really having a blast building a server and poking around at its hardware. That is all. Them, much like myself, could give two cares less about Dream. As he's just a one-time thing. So why does it matter so much that Dream is remotely related? They're not advertising them.

    Just to clarify some things from a speedrunner: Dream essentially cheating his luck by increasing the odds so, while he attempted to get the record, the luck he had was astronomically impossible to hit. It would be like hitting the lottery hundreds of times in a row without missing. So, Dream was called out on it by the moderators. He wasn't banned, his run was 'unverified' because they couldn't verify it. He fired back and attacked the moderators calling them liars and clout chasers. This took to them providing all the evidence that they had of Dream cheating. After this, Dream hired an 'expert scientist' to prove that he wasn't cheating. The math however was heavily criticized as being incorrect and made a lot of assumptions, but Dream still attacked the moderators for doing their jobs and sent his legion of ravenous fans to attack them and they got an INSANE amount of hate for calling him a cheater. Then, almost a year later he admitted on his alt Twitter account that he cheated and 'didn't realize it at the time' (which doesn't make sense coming from a professional speedrunner.) that he had mods enabled. He did an apology to his fans and never for his actual actions afterwards of lying and trying to hide it or attacking the moderators. THAT is why people don't like him.

    • @hoezhiwan
      @hoezhiwan Год назад +13

      Just to clarify, Dream said that his mod developer didn't inform him until very much later that his mod contain higher odds for blaze drops and ender pearl trades. Which Dream didn't know.
      He is young and stupid. Probably should've done more research and maybe stop going on Twitter so much.
      But antis aren't to be ignored though. When you have popularity, a lot of people just want to hate you back.

      @@hoezhiwan Uhhh yeah as a speedrunner the situation is very black and white. He still has never apologized to the mods, his accusations towards them have nothing to do with that mistake, and again: he is a professional Minecrafter and speedran the game for hundreds of hours. He knew you couldn't have those mods PERIOD, even if he thought they didn't do anything. Maybe if he apologized and never tried to send harassment to the mods I'd be more kind, but his actions are horrendous and he still hasn't truly made up for that mistake.

    • @hoezhiwan
      @hoezhiwan Год назад +6

      @@DemonicRobots Yes, he handled it poorly and shouldn't have done it. But we all do stupid things when we are young (not a defence for his actions but you get my point), and yes he did apologize to the mods, maybe you missed it or you felt it wasn't genuine enough, but it was good enough for Geosquare and Willz. I can't change your mind but maybe Karl Jobst could? He is a credible guy in the speedrunning community and his video about the situation covered what went on in Dream's mind.
      I can understand hating him for what he did to the speedrunning community, creating distrust and making verifying much more difficult. But harbouring resentment is not the best thing in life, especially towards somebody who got into the spotlight a bit too quick and failed to adapt as easily.

    Tl;dr for Dream:
    He's a creator who's been consistently irresponsible with how he's handled his massive following, by doing everything but actively supporting his fans harassing, brigading, and doxxing other individuals. At the same time, he strongly promotes a parasocial relationship with his young fans that results in an almost obsessive following.
    However it's important to say it doesn't appear to come from a place of malice: as Riley said, he's just way too immature and unready to handle his massive platform and forgets his petty actions can send thousands of fans on a warpath.
    Two big "controversies":
    1.He achieved high-profile speedrun record while using a mod that massively reduces RNG of runs. When called out, started a smear campaign against the moderators of the speedrun category, straight up lied, did nothing to stop the crazy amount of fans harassing the mods thanked/retweeted them instead, and then finally admitted he cheated with half-ass apology.
    2. High profile case of a kid getting heavily harassed and doxxed by his community, resulting in them deleting all their social media and disappearing off internet. Rather than responding, Dream turns into edgelord (like literally says its time for his evil arc), posts smug comments about making people who argue with him delete their accounts and seemingly supporting the actions of his community.

    In all honestly i truly dont understand why there are any controversy in regards to Dream paying for a server build. There is no relation to any minecraft. Nor was Dream in some sort of legal issue, or is a convicted criminal for a heinous crime. People like to judge others way too much, in the court of public opinion.
    To be honest i am not really into the minecraft speedrunning community, nor do i have ever played minecraft, i know what the game is like from watching videos of it. Since the controversy was regarding the world seed, i wonder do minecraft speedrunners use the same seed or is it randomized, if random then they are technically speedrunning a different minecraft game, and are just running solo marathons instead of competing with anyone else. The stage should be as equal as possible, so the seed should be the same across all attempts, since the seed is one element that can be fixed. Only then would they be running against someone else attempting a speedrun. If the seed is different then the speed run is not valid. At least in my opinion, because its like having two 100m runners, one on a slope and another on a climb, obviously the guy running on a slope would have an easier time compared to the guy running uphill.

    • @DemonicRobots
      @DemonicRobots Год назад

      So, this is so so so so so so so so wrong. 1) There are two categories, Set Seed and Random Seed. Set seed is what you said, where everyone plays the same exact Minecraft map. The category he was doing though was Random Seed, meaning it is supposed to be random everytime. And yes, the randonmess means that someone can get a good seed or a bad seed and that happens. That wasn't the issue. The issue was it WASN'T random. He changed the values so his seeds were ALWAYS good and in his favor to the point where they were so good it was mathematically impossible. It was like he was hitting the lottery over a hundred times in a row and winning the jackpot each time. It cannot be done. That was him cheating. Using your example, it is like if one of the 100m runners was using steroids. That gives him an obvious, unfair advantage. 2) The main issue was his response. When he was caught Dream wasn't banned, their run was simply removed. His response was EXPLOSIVE and he not only attacked the moderators, he had his fans attack them as well. Then they provided their proof, and he hired a 'scientist' that lied and made poor assumptions to prove his innocence that was proven wrong by actual mathematicians. Then a year later he admitted he cheated and caused all these problems and hate for nothing, and his 'apology' wasn't even to the mods, it was to his 'fans for dissapointing' them. So yeah, as a speedrunner I think I'm judging him fairly when he does terrible things like this.

    • @aquaventus
      @aquaventus Год назад

      @@DemonicRobots Hmm. Yes i suppose if he was competing in the ''random'' seed category then he would be cheating by not using a randomized seed. Unless his ''good'' seed was actually randomized, then he is technically still using a random seed, just adjusted to favor certain rules. Like 2 100m runners on the same track, but one track is dry while the other track is wet. The legit runners run on the wet track, while the cheater had dried out his lane before the race.
      Overall tho, as someone who is not invested in the scene, but respects anyone who does their best in what they do, i do consider him an asshole for cheating by going around the rules, or not. Still doesnt make him ordering a server from LTT a bad thing, nor does it make LTT bad by proxy for building him a server that he paid for.
      AS i mention, he is not someone in the legal process, legally convicted of a violent crime, a sex offender, etc various other vile crimes. Did he stab someone? No. Did he kill someone? No.
      Did he cheat in a game and lied about it, until he finally admitted to it? Yes. He is like that one guy from years ago who cheated and lied for countless years about getting the world record at some arcade game.

He has made his career and millions of dollars off of Minecraft speedrunning, so in the same way that an athlete is caught doping, there should be consequences for his actions but because he is famous, he gets away with it. And me calling him out is a minority for that. Just because he didn't murder anyone doesn't mean we can't vehemently dislike him, especially as a speedrunner myself.

      I dont even know who Dream is before i read the comment section on the server build video, so i dont know why anyone would consider him famous, maybe in a small group he is, but in the wider world he is just a random minecraft youtuber.
      I agree that we can hate him for being immoral in his actions. Hopefully he flips over a new leaf and do something else, like what logan paul did by faking some boxing matches. Just because they didnt kill anyone doesnt make their crime any less important.
      In the end, the consequence for his actions would and should be anger and hate from his general community, which i think is the minecraft speedrunning community, and the speedrunning community as a whole. Maybe ignore or reject any of his attempts to submit any speedrun score for several years. You cant block him from doing a speedrun, you can however reject his numbers. You cant deny him from playing the game either, thats on Microsoft.

He spent like a year telling his fans that the mod team that banned him is just trying to use his name, out to get him, hate him and so on. And then surprise surprise, his fans kept harassing them for doing their job. The dude went to crazy lengths just to maintain some stupid clout with his speedrun.
      So you are right, people shouldn't care that much about cheating a speedrun.

  • @m6isme

    With the dream thing - there's a great video the MODS of the speedrunning site did, which goes into the outstandingly low odds of runs of his luck are occurring. Regardless of what Dream claims ("I delete my mods folder weekly" like what??), it just uses the hard video evidence that he himself submits for runs. Ex: trading gold to zombie pigmen, will SOMETIMES drop an item, and SOMETIMES drops a very certain item(s) needed. It was found that his good rolls were happening some wild number of times more than expected. A huge figure that I'm not even gonna try to ballpark.

    Here's the solution: do the barest research into who youre going to collaborate with for a video. Ask the social media management "hey, would making a video about this creator cause more headaches?" You admit that you don't do a ton of research for these collaborations? Cool. Do some research before you commit to a project, ask the Floatplane/Fourm community about creators you're looking at working with. You have a team of people who work as writers and producers, and doing these consistent "oopsies" (the builds, gpu mining videos, etc) reflect incredibly poorly on you all as creators.
    I get it, you're a business and collaborating with larger channels helps drive engagement, but when you have had these issues of not doing research before making a video about a subject continue to crop up and the response is just "oops, sorry, we will try not to do it again, but I would do it again" like you said in the clip, it cheapens the idea that you are actually listening to the community in these kinds of things.
