Not orthodox but certainly effective. 619 wickets is no joke and is easily up there with Murali and Warne. Indian fans - why is he not given due credit as someone like Sachin or Kapil Dev? Indians had just returned from South Africa in Nov ‘92 and were beaten badly but remember Kumble, Raju & Chauhan literally spinning out England. Remember the Sportstar magazine cover after the series having the three holding each other’s hands as the new spin trio in Indian cricket. Vinod Kambi’s 224 was a huge innings which he followed up with 227 very shortly against the touring Zimbabweans in the one-off test at the Kotla in Delhi. Amazing memories!!

England was all cock a hoop for this series since India had a horrible time against new comers South Africa in South Africa. They were hopeless against the trio of Kumble/Raju/Chauhan. This series actually started years of mediocre 90’s in English cricket.
I listened to the commentary on AIR of all three test matches. India clearly were better side under those conditions but to be honest there were certain Debatable decisions from indian umpires.

Commentators realised very early in Kumbley’s career that he doesn’t turn his leg spinners but it took about 15 years for the opposition batsmen 😊
