  • Many people want to know should I have sheep or goats on my homestead or small acre farm. In many ways they serve similar purposes but they are definitely different. We will talk about my thoughts on goats and sheep. Here at the Flanagan Homestead we are running both on our pasture. In my opinion some of the main difference between goats and sheep are. Goats are friendlier and make better pets than sheep. Sheep graze grass while goats prefer to browse broadleaf. Goats are better in dry heat, sheep don't mind cold and rain. Goats are much harder to contain in a fence than sheep. @Flanagan Homestead

Great video, I was a sheep for many years. As far as sheep being and pet friendly, several things to concider, (in my experience) I had Finnsheep now that breed is conceded to be naturally friendly, I raised them for wool and I needed friendly so I could shear them myself and trained them to stand still while i worked on them. So friendliness had to come from the Ewe raising her lamb to be freindly. Friendly moms raised friendly lambs and to make them really friendly introduce a bottle to get a little milk, like a snack not enough to interfere with mom's milk. Unless Of course you have a bottle baby those will always be your friend. I breed for personally, so I sold the unfriendly sheep. I also raised Shetland sheep friendliness would breed down their line. There were wild one's and your best friend ones.
Love your channel and I learn something new with each one.

Thanks for input. This is true of goats as well. Certain breeds are friendlier and the offspring of your best animals tend to be your best new animals.

I will try to do that. It won’t be until we start shearing in mid July. I might do a couple early so I can get it recorded

How about sharing a favorite recipe for each type of meat?

I would have to get my wife to share on the lamb. I like boiling goat rib to soften it up then put it on the grill
