- This is the story about that time I almost died. A very small scratch landed me in the hospital for four days, and largely incapacitated me for the next year. What did I learn from the experience?

So glad you lived. The world is a better place with you in it.
Truth
That's really awful Pete, but goodness prevails and here you are ,and Henry's plastic coin helped you because you needed to survive for your family..I am glad you survived .
Good words! I agree!
This realm loves you Pete! Keep up the sharing, please.
your so right susan i also am so glad he made it.
My grandmother who was 92 and my best friend just passed, I must say Pete your videos are providing me with some comfort during some of the worst days of my life. Your calm voice and attitude have really helped soothe my pain a bit and I thank you. So glad you made it through and it's a good video to share because people may overlook septic shock very easily.
I am sorry to hear about your Grandmother Nick. Best wishes.
@@JustaFewAcresFarm Thank you, I truly appreciate it
@@nickk4010 ya keep your head up nick
@@kylerobtoy9216 Thank you for the kind words it means a lot

Just went though this with my Husband. He developed an open wound with the redness on his leg. It was so scary and i thought the wound would never heal but it did. I watch him like a Hawk now and give him lots of Probiotics and fermented foods to help his gut. So glad you're still around. You make the World a better place.
Just watched this, July 2024. Don't know if you'll see this comment Pete but my admiration for you and your approach to your farm and life in general is indescribably heartfelt. Things happen. There is drama. It's how you react that makes all the difference. And you reacted the best way possible.
That is like a story that I tell at work. To my operators to report all injuries no matter how minor they are. The story that I tell is about a man that stuck a sonic toothpick in his foot and didn’t realize that the tip broke off in his foot and he almost lost his foot because of it. Thanks for the story. I may use it at my next safety meeting. If you don’t mind thanks again
Thank goodness you’re okay we love you Pete
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼🇦🇺🐨
when i was a cop i was bitten i went to the hospital then sent home , i came back in the morning my hand looked like a baseball glove . i was admitted they threw lots of anti biotics three days later i was out. this scared me big time. Im glad your with us PETE
Pete I just watched this two days ago and commented on a barbed wire incident I’d just had. Low and behold, I looked down just a moment ago and was surprised to see redness, and quite a large swelling toward my elbow. I had drawn the circle like you said you’d done, and I see it has spread below it a bit in the other direction. I’m cancelling my plans tomorrow and trying to get into my dr…if not, then a walk-in clinic. It’s a bit sore, I just hadn’t paid attention to it bcs I was busy. THANK YOU
Hallelujah! Hope you are doing well :)
Oh wow. Thank goodness you watched this video. Let us know how it goes. 🙏💙🙏
This is no joke I actually experienced the same thing the flesh was falling off my left leg and spent 7 days in the hospital and 7 bags of vancomicine antibiotics I completely understand how you felt I just stubbed my toe at the lake is all how it happened!! It's crazy great story Pete thanks for sharing!!
I'm glad you're here to tell your story. I can identify with you. I became septic after having my colon nicked during surgery and not until 5 days later did it all come to a head. More surgery, 8 days in the hospital and then a long recovery. Though I was lucky. There was no damage to my intestine. Again I'm glad that you survived and give us joy with your channel. Continue for you and your family to remain healthy. Be well.
Yeap, it’s not fun. I went through a similar thing from a a psoriasis cyst. I was shutting down as well. Spent 8 days in the hospital. It can be a scary thing. Glad you pulled through Pete. 🇺🇸✌🏻❤️
Thank you Pete - it had a happy ending - your still here . Love your stories - keep telling them !
I love how honest you are about your experience after the fact. My husband had a heart attack 5 or 6 years ago. He was pretty good about trying to eat healthier for about 6 months or so, then gradually fell back into the less healthy foods. Unfortunately he eats even worse than before the heart attack. Instead of pestering him, I tell him, as long as you're happy, you do you, I'll do me.
So so glad you lived. Love your videos always.
Dang, you got me scared when you said sepsis. Great story and I'm glad you made it through it!
My dad died of sepsis in 84 …. His organs shut down after a week …sepsis is acute and life threatening
Hillary to the rescue! Glad you ended up coming out the other side, Pete!
Hey Pete
I had a very similar event.
I had got a skinned knuckle wile driving a tractor
I was changing hydraulic lines all the time and got fluid in the spot
Next thang I knew- I was in the E R with blood poisoning.
Almost died.
Can’t remember A thang
That's a great story of life on the farm and just how simple things can go wrong.
I was watching one of his videos and thought you two have so much in common.
Hey Pete glad you are OK. I know how you felt when this happened to you. I got a scratch on my knee and a week later I had MRSA and a staff infection. I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 days getting pumped with antibiotics and almost lost my leg. Not sure where you are with GOD but he was definitely watching over me. I am extremely happy you made it through that blip of you life. I think GOD was watching over you as well because you are now a huge influence to many people including myself. Love the videos and keep going strong bud
Pete !! Talk about blue eyes to drop dead for !! You got them !!
Thanks for the story. My near death experience came while I was still working for the man trying to pay for the farm. It was in the seat of a crane. Everything happened so fast that there wasn't time to think, react, let alone reminisce! But it was a moment that I relived over and over.
You can't put some experience into words. It changes your perspective. People around you can't really understand your decisions after that point. Until they have the experience?
I am very glad that you survived Pete!!👍👍
Im glade your still with us
Thanks for relating. In September of 2006 I had 60% of my pancreas, spleen and a few lymph nodes removed because of cancer. In November I remember going to work, getting about half way through my commute feeling lousy. I noticed all of my windows were steamed up in the truck. I got home, took my temperature and it was 104. I remember riding in the car going to the hospital and thinking, "I've survived 5 bouts of cancer and now an infection is going to kill me. I had developed a fistula that resulted in sepsis. I spent about a week in the hospital until the infection was under control. Pretty scary times.
5 bouts of cancer?! You my friend are a true warrior. Glad you are here to tell your story!
Septicemia is no joke. Had that at 19 years old. Crazy time in the hospital. I was exhausted for about a month or so.
Thanks Pete for sharing your personal story. Glad you are still here teaching small scale farming.
Wow, weird it came from a log bumping you? Glad your ok Buddy, take care🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
I skipped all the super popular RUclipsrs for your video I just get way more enjoyment from your channel keep up the great work!
Wow Pete that's quite the story. I'm glad you made it for many reasons but I really enjoy your videos
That was a horrifying story Pete. Glad you’re OK.
Thanks for sharing! Sepsis is nothing to play with. God bless!
Thank you for sharing. It may have only been a blip to you, but to your loving wife, three children and parents it must have scared them each very deeply. Hell it scared me! So glad you survived.
I'm glad you made it through it Pete.
I love that green moldy tractor! It has the greatest patina I have ever seen. 8:40
great to see you made it. life wouldnt be the same
Glad you made it. I have a Farmall
I've experienced a few times when the Drs had done all they could and they'd warned my loved ones there was little hope, no big life changing experiences for me either yet a slow increase in understanding what's no longer important to me.
Now I do enjoy each day just as it is, glad to be alive, so I do take time to smell the roses, acknowledge all living things and scatter more seeds.
Thanks for the videos every new video is watched and I am working my way through all I've not seen. Cheers from Western Australia
Glad you got recovered. Septic shock with MRSA infection risk higher among the farm workers due to farm animals who are the source. Mostly infected with antibiotics resistance bacteria, as a infectious diseases Ispecialist I see that quite often.
A biting fly nearly killed me. The bite didn't look infected, nor hurt, but just wouldn't heal. Eventually symptoms of the staph infection set in and I became very ill. Three surgeries, 19 days in ICU, 3 1/2 months on IV antibiotics, and 8 months later I was infection free and learning to walk again. It's been two years, but I'm almost back to complete health and mobile again, although I'm on an oral antibiotic for life. So glad you are healthy again, too. Thanks for the videos, glimpses of a life well lived, and teachable moments.
First of all, Glad you made it through the experience. Secondly, I think we are all beginning to realize how amazing Hillary is. Thirdly, watching you two work as a team is inspiring.
Thanks for sharing your story.can you do a video on your tractors that sit out in the weeds?
That’s a crazy story! Glad you came through!
I am so glad I have found your channel. Being from Oklahoma it’s refreshing to see folks from New York that are not from the cities. The great thing about channels like yours is we see how much people from all states have so much in common. Thanks for letting me peek into your life.
New York state is >99% not New York City. The vast majority is rural America - farms and forests.
It’s eerie that the scratch, that could definitely occur anywhere on farm, happened right where your Grandpa had his accident. ☠️
Very
Does make you double think ….when near the spot a relative passed on …
Jinxed spot
Glad to hear you recovered Pete. We never know when our time is up. Puts life into perspective. Enjoy ever moment ☘️🇮🇪 go n-éirí an bóthar leat
Thanks for the story Pete. I can definitely say that I've been there and done that and I had C-diff also. The one great thing that you had going for you is that Hillary was a critical care nurse and I didn't have that. I love your stories and look forward to them every time you post. Have a great day and a wonderful day tomorrow at the Ithaca Farmers Market.
Brings back memories. I was horseback trail riding and hit a cutoff tree limb right on the shin and that started the chain of events you described. The urgent care finally sent me to the ER. I had a deep staph infection that was turning into MERSA had I waited and not treated. It took several months to get over this. I still have a light stinging sensation on occasion, which is normal.
I know how you feel Pete I wasn't hit by a splinter of wood but I went through the sepsis. I had a wound that I didn't notice on my left forearm it didn't bother me but it kept worse so I went to sickbay to have it looked at. The corpsman lanced it and found that it was a horrible infection nasty smell, etc...I was taken to US NAVAL Hospital Okinawa and placed in ICU. I stayed there for 4 days it must be a magic number Pete. I was given so many antibiotics and finally something worked. I had been on the rifle range yearly qualifications for Marines. The firing points were paved with asphalt the aggregate was coral and that gave me the infection. I am glad to see that you have bounced back Pete.
So glad that you made it, you're so lucky to have such a loving wife, this world is so much better with you two existing in it
Make memories when ya can. Months after my uncle and aunt had their 25th anniversary and months after my uncle died of a stroke last year working on a pool
And that uncles name was Pete too
Wow Pete!!!
Holy Smoke.
That is SCARRY !!!
I am SO Happy to hear that You and Hillary and the Kids pulled through that Ordeal
Cheers
I had the same thing about 3 years ago from a dead jaw bone that was replaced because from radiation from throat cancer treatments I went through in 2012 through 2017. I like you, felt horrible. It got really bad to where I couldn’t walk to the car so my wife could take me to the hospital.
I'm glad you are still with us Pete! You make my day so much better when you post a new video. I really enjoy your videos.
Love that you did this video. My mother passed away from Sepsis.
I wish more people where aware of it.
Thank you for letting others know. I'm going people learn more about it so that people don't need to die unnecessarily.
Glad you made it. We enjoy your videos.
Hillarie, thank you for saving Pete's life! If you hadn't spotted that infection when you did, like most of us men, he would have left it until it was too late. Doesn't bear thinking about.
Yes, Pete. Even today a scratch can kill you. At least today you don't have worry about tetanus. We are all perched on the edge of mortality, just like the Dexters you choose for the butcher each week. It is so easy to forget that simple fact. It's good that the cows forget that a few of the herd are missing every week. Maybe good for us as well. Not for each of us individually, of course, but for the herd. Can you imagine what would happen if cows started worrying about the future?
Pete, That was a pretty bad thing that you went thru, Glad you made it thru ok, I would miss your farmers market videos, Kidding.
Thanks for sharing your life' with us Life is short we need to be reminded .Love your channel and Farm.
😳😳😳 Oh my goodness!!! I am happy for you and your family that it turned out well. 🙌🙌 God bless you all. 🙌🙌👍🙏☝️
Oh boy can't wait to hear this one!
Wow that was more than a bump in the road. I would of called it a mountain. Because it toke a whole year to get better between your scratch and your gut..l say god was watching out for you and your wife was too. Bless them both for looking out for you. It's great when you can count on family.
Your videos are seriously the best videos on RUclips I’ve watched every video an most of them I’ve watched twice! Your not just about a farmer your part of the building block to our country an what built it! The life lessons you talk about or show or do inspires me to be a better father better husband an hopefully a better community person! There needs to be more families like yours in this world. I wish but nothing but the best for you all! Please don’t ever stop making videos lol
Good to see that you received the Solano Falcon shirt have a great weekend
Thanks for the shirt Barry!
I was wondering about the shirt. What a small world, I took some courses there and then went on to Chabot College.
Glad to see someone mention the shirt. What a small world. My wife graduated from Armijo high school (Armijo Indians Class of '55) which was after Solano Falcons. I went to school at Fairfield High (Fairfield Falcons Class of '77) Don't mean to be a downer but my wife's oldest son had Merca (Spelling?) from a knee replacement surgery. Never controlled the infection and past away 8 months later. Needles to say, my wife was very nervous when I had both knee replacements over the last 10 months. All is good for me. Thanks for your story Pete.
Wow, how bizarre no word of a lie Pete, same thing happen to me, but it was an old wooden deck we were removing. Wood splinter.
Your story tells so much of how are day can change pretty fast and the outcome could have ended very differently as you know, but the help and support of your family helped to bring about your successful recovery.
Glad you’re here to tell the story!
Had a little scratch in the jungle in Belize. Five days later at home, I was sent to the emergency room. It was sepsis and lucky for me treated successfully with an antibiotic. What a story , lucky your wife is a nurse. Take care.
Pete you are truly an inspirational person! I had a friend once who you remind me of. He was a talented artist and craftsman who could do anything from building, furniture design and repair, glass blowing, drawing and painting and the list goes on and on. He had a stroke and lost the use of this dominant side and had to relearn to draw, write, drive and function left handed only afterward. You and Hank set strong examples for the high achievements possible for us. I honor you and thank you for that!
glad your ok pete. my grandfather had sepsis after a knee replacement. thank god both of yall are alright!!
So glad you made it through Pete. I went Septic about 13 years ago and had a very similar experience. I actually collapsed walking into the ER. I had a fever of 105.7 and my heart rate was 188. I just remember a blur of doctors and medical staff. They had two IVs going and also packed me in ice. The scariest part I remember is they strapped a defibrillator to my chest thinking I may have a heart attack at any moment . I was in the hospital for three days and took another week to recover and mostly sleep. It’s scary, scary stuff. I’ll never forget that the doctor that wrote up the case wrote that I was a “very pleasant man” 😄 I guess I stayed polite and affable at least.
It figures you are a fellow Vonnegut fan. Man do I miss him.
Stay healthy!
Certainly glad God was with you and you survived. My husband and I would have missed so much pleasure you and Hillary bring to our days. We only discovered your You Tube channel a few months ago and have brought so much fun and life to our 76 year old lives! Thanks for all you have brought to us!
This was a hard one for me to watch. Glad you are OK. My dad passed away about 6 hours ago. He is a retired farmer.
Wow, from a little scratch. I'm glad you made it through. We are all better for it. Thanks for sharing Pete.
We are blessed to have you and Hilary in our lives. Thank you for sharing your true life with us.
I love that old Ormick Mall.
That was a bad experience, sorry to hear that your Grandfather passed that way ,your experience like many others will help others to avoid those dangers GOD BLESS and have a great weekend
An amazing story. I just finished your book " A Year and a Day " what a great read, well written and to the point. I am so glad that I have found you and your farm ( family too ) ; Thanks for everything, may god bless you and yours............
Years ago, my Brother got a small gash in his shin while clearing brush along the edge of his residential property. Did not think much of it. It got infected and turned into "Lock Jaw". He also spent several days in the hospital.
See ! Don't play with strange wood !
😜
Glad you're ok !
What a scary story Pete. I've had a family member go through pretty much the same thing you did. It is a very scary experience for you but family. But on a side note I wanted to say thank you. My father and I watched your restoration on your MD. We got inspiration to fix my great grandfather's 1952 super m. We're not gonna paint it or anything. But she runs good.
Wow Pete you went through alot. I had c-diff once. It was horrible. I just had my ileostomy reversed and a few weeks later I got the c-diff. Thank God you are all better. And thank God I am better too.
It's was a good story it makes me take a step back and think about life a little more give the miss a huge be glad she was their
We are so fragile.
Yes, I've listened to your story...but I must confess, my attention was drawn to all your tractors!
Great story. I'm glad you made it out alive. I'm learning a lot from you about life. Well done.
Great video Pete! Loved your cinematography and of course I'm glad you survived.
Glad you made it through that time. Think of the lives you touched since then. Enjoying your channel
Love your videos. You inspired us to start a channel. Glad you didn’t die!
In April of 2009 I went through almost the same thing. Except mine was in my right knee after a routine scope for a torn meniscus. Six days in the hospital, 60 pounds lost, three years on disability, and at 28 years old I became one of the youngest people my Ortho ever did a total knee replacement replacement on because it cause so much scar tissue.
They probably did not clean their instruments properly and did not sterilize them well or at all.
I’ve read a few comments Pete and I don’t think that I am able to watch this one. So glad that you came through and can continue with life. Be blessed.
That’s a scary moment Glad your doing good Pete
That’s incredible story and amazing wife you have 💕
I have been sick for over a week and your story made me a little more comfortable. Thanks.
Right there with you. I had a very similar experience about five weeks ago. No scratch, urinary infection. Went sepsis. About died. I have to be on anabiotic‘s for six weeks.
By the way I am 67 years old and a retired architectural engineer. I watch all your videos. I’m an old Farm boy. Had a similar set up to yours at one time only on a smaller scale. Our only tractor at that time was it 1954 MTA. That’s the year I was born. I have also restored old farm machinery no tractors. I live in Portland Indiana where we have the worlds largest antique engine and tractor show.
I am fighting leukemia and ended up with sepsis, its a feeling that you cant describe unless you get close to death. appreciate every breath, be good and kind.
So happy you made it. God bless!
Happy you’re still with us. You’re a bright part of the day. Thank you for sharing.
its greats to have a wife in the medical system. I had a similar issues twice which my wife found issues with my hospital care. Its always better to go into a doctor sooner than later. it takes only a few days to go from bad to worse however a longer period of time to get better and stop a infection. I almost lost a leg to bad infection.
I can relate very well to this video Pete I was in the hospital just 1 year longer than you though 1yr4dys coma for the first 3months and my wife is also a nurse. To this day any med I take she is right on it finding out all she can. Another reason I love her!
Wow! Your story has taught me to treat scratches right away or ASAP with soap and water.
