STORYTIME! Somebody That I Used To Know will forever remind me of when I was first cruised on at University. I had a late night class and went to library after to print before I went to my car to drive home. I exit library alone, but a few minutes outside I feel someone following. I glance back and there's this guy rushing towards me a bit back. I think nothing of it, but he's looking right at me - Eyes on the Prize gaze. Odd. I keep going and pick up pace in case. I get to my car in parking structure. As I'm about to get in he turns corner and says loudly "Hey, you looking for something?" My heart dropped as I fumble "No." He disappointedly says "Oh, I just saw you glancing over at me at the computers." (I never even saw him there!). As he turns around, I realize physically he's kinda my type (and this is Bold of him as I was of larger build than him) and say "Wait, give me your number" and that I'd text him next day bc not tonight (I wasn't that type of grrl then 💅🏼). Anyway, I do and he picks me up next day and this song is ON REPEAT. He says it's his current jam and goes on about Gotye. I listened to a lot of EDM at that time, but I thought it was cute... but something creeped me out about the song. (I think it reminded me of a circus or a carnival or something sinister like that). I decide we should just go get coffee as I have a class. He was a handsome guy, suuuper smart (Astrophysics... made my life science background seem like child's play; But I'm a sapiosexual so this just turned me on more), but we just didn't fully sync personality-wise. And I could never shake the creepiness of that song away. I'd like to think Somebody That I Used To Know may have saved me from being another statistic. And this guy ironically ended up just being somebody that I used to know 😂 Thanks, Gotye!

There are so many songs and sounds bits that are very similar these days it's almost impossible to make an original. Yes, there are acceptions. But sampling is key. If you want a good pop song, just get permission first if you're going to publish it.
