  • @G8tr1522
    @G8tr1522 8 месяцев назад +126

    you'd make it sound even more gospel-ey by playing it as
    C E7/B A-
    to provide some chromatic bass movement, which is ESSENTIAL for gospel. All you did here was a secondary dominant, which is helpful for gospel, but is featured in many genres, esp jazz.
    If you really wanna spice it up, add the tritone substitute of E7 -> Bb7. So:
    C E7/B Bb7 A-
    or if you're feeling frisky
    C E7/B Bb7alt A-

      What does “alt” mean, Im learning English musical terms, Im from Mexico, I understand most of them thanks to my college music which is a Berklee Global Partner but, Im trying to get the most of your comment, just talked about melodic bass in my ear training class today!, greetings from Mexico City

    • @DiegoSanchez-mi6nl
      @DiegoSanchez-mi6nl Месяц назад

      Mentioned “Melodic Bass” because of the fact that you mentioned it as Chromatic Bass, by intuition they have to be very much similar ideas, we study part of the “Melodic Bass” concept as being the use of chord inversions for example to generate a much pleasant movement between progressions, as I understand your example tries to imply

    • @G8tr1522
      @G8tr1522 Месяц назад +4

      @@DiegoSanchez-mi6nl "Altered Dominant" is a kinda loose definition.
      A simple definition is to just to augment the 5, and play a sharp 9. (eg, C7alt = C7#5#9 = C, E, G#, Bb, D#). At least, that's what i did for years.
      I think a more accurate definition is to select tones from the 7th mode of the Melodic Minor Ascending scale, with the root based off the diminished second. (i hope that's the proper terminology there). Just ignore the fancy lexical terms. All you do is select tones from the melodic minor scale with the scale root being one semitone up from your desired chord root. For example, C7alt is all the notes of C# melodic minor ascending = C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, B#. But you start it on the 7th mode, so for C7alt = B#, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A# = C, Db, Eb, E, Gb, G#, Bb. I chose that last spelling to emphasize the number system: 1, b2/b9, b3, 3, b5, #5, b7.
      Anyways, the technique i use is to just choose a proper voicing using several of those notes. So far, this has worked well for me, but there may be a better approach. Often, i will play an alt chord like this: 1, 3, #5, #9, b13 or in C: C, E, G#, D#, Bb. You get a nice stacking of 5ths in the last three notes.
      The best part of this definition is the scale you now have to use over the chord. Just go a semitone up, And play melodic minor ascending. Easy enough to remember in an instant.
      Alt chords of course are used for their mysterious qualities, and can add a ton of tension to your harmony. Go and try the example i mentioned in my original comment.
      I'm self taught, so there's probably an even more accurate definition, but this will get you most of the way there. Hope that helps.

      Can you explain primary dominate?

    • @Rexbrett1
      @Rexbrett1 9 месяцев назад +20

      @@KNIGHTJUMPSprimary dominant chords come from the fifth degree of a any given diatonic key. So the structure of a diatonic key has seven chords the I-ii-iii-IV-V-vi-vii the 1-4 and 5 chords are major the 2-3-6 are minor chords and the 7 is diminished. The thing is about the dominant chord even though it is derived from the 5th degree of the scale its is not a diatonic chord due to the the flat 7 so if you are in the key of c the 5 chord will be g major G-B-D but if you add F to the chord G-B-D-F the diatonic five chord turn into a dominant chord which is actually a non diatonic chord borrowed from another key. The function or purpose of the dominant chord is to signal musically that its time to return back to the tonic or one chord. That is it basic use but the dominant chord can be used in other functions as well but that’s a different topic hope this helps.

      i hope you realize that you blaspheme God with that omg saying ya'll had better pray for truth and for you're spiritual eyes to be opened and for help from Jesus and ya'll had better repent
      most of you believers blaspheme God on a daily basis without even realizing it because of how spiritually blind deceived and lost most of you believers are
      ya'll had better get to praying or ya'll isn't going to heaven ya'll on you're ways to hell
      i hope ya'll know and realize that crystals are apart of witchcraft you isn't a real christian if you wear and or associate yourself with such things
      ya'll had better repent and pray to Jesus Christ for truth and help from Him before it is too late
      Jesus never taught and never preached and He never promised us that we would somehow be once saved always saved and Jesus never taught never preached and never promised us to be saved by belief alone without any conditions that go with that belief in Him
      john 3:16 doesn't prove that we don't have anything else that we required to do especially if ya'll actually pay attention to everything else Jesus taught and preached and what Jesus actually promised not just john 3:16
      Jesus straight up debunks and preached against that easy grace false gospel
      if only you foolish believers would actually pay attention to everything Jesus said and says not just a few bible verses you blind fools would realize that
      Jesus never promised us that we would be saved by belief alone in Him without any other requirements Jesus never promised such a thing like most of believers foolishly believe yourself to be saved just simply by going by john 3:16
      john 3:16 isn't the only thing that Jesus taught and preached and it isn't Jesus's only requirement to be allowed into His Kingdom of heaven
      and Jesus most definitely never promised us that we would be once saved always saved
      most of you believers believe in lies that the real Jesus Christ never taught and never preached and never promised us
      ya'll better be praying

    The E7 is what’s called a secondary dominant, in this example, V7 of vi … The 6th note of the C-scale is A … Using that A to start a new (secondary) scale, the 5th note (as a 7th chord) is E7 …
    This is standard in college level theory.
    I’ve been writing clever sound-a-like songs for my piano students for nearly 25 of my 35 years teaching. One of my songs is a gospel tune I call, “The Grapefruit Gospel”. While it has the typical elements of gospel, I didn’t analyze it when I wrote it. I just wrote it by ear.
    Eventually I did analyze it, and noticed secondary dominants all over it!
    College courses don’t typically present all the uses of the secondary dominant, so kudos to you Lisa for making your viewers aware of a great one!😀👍🎹

      Yeah @James Michael you might be thinking of Bb7. The tritone of B dim (B D F) is B and F while the tritone of E7 is G# and D. The tritone of Bb7 is Ab and D, which is sonically identical to G# and D of E7. What makes the movement E7/Bb7 to Am so strong is the G#/Ab resolving up to A and the D down to C.
      B dim only has a B and D in common with E7... but if you look at E7b9 (E G# B D F), which functions the exact same way, then you would have that B-F tritone
