  • In this informative session from the 5th Annual HVAC/R Training Symposium, Matthew Taylor draws from his 25 years of experience in the supermarket world to provide an Introduction to Market Refrigeration for HVAC Techs.
Matthew covers the key differences between residential/commercial air conditioning systems and the parallel rack refrigeration systems found in supermarkets. He explains how the core refrigeration cycle concepts are the same, but the physical setup, components, and control strategies differ in market refrigeration.
Some of the topics covered include:
Major components like compressor racks, condensers, and evaporator cases
Control systems and sensors for precise temperature/pressure regulation
Maintaining different evaporator temperatures for product zones (freezers, coolers, etc.)
Defrosting strategies for evaporator coils running below freezing
Reclaim systems that recycle compressor heat for hot water or dehumidification
Split condensers and fan staging for low ambient operation
Whether you're an HVAC tech looking to understand grocery store refrigeration better or just interested in learning about this specialized area, Matthew's engaging presentation provides a clear overview. The session allows for participant questions throughout.

Thank you Brian; this video was perfectly timed, because I started considering stepping into commercial refrigeration JUST the other day!!!

Wow! Matthew Taylor obviously knows market refrigeration so well he could explain it amazingly clearly that even I understood what he was saying, but more importantly he emphasized differences from residential A/C in a way that both reinforced the underlying physics & made them memorable. I'm sure there is plenty more information where that came from, and I hope to find more videos of him lecturing in the future.

Thank you so much Brian! Seconding Parabellum-X; I’ve been thinking about the residential to commercial switch for quite sometime, and finally made the leap. Starting on with a commercial & industrial company on the 11th!! Great into as I’m trying to prep as much as possible.

35:25 - TD is as you said: the difference between the temperature of the air over the coil and the saturation temperature. In comfort cooling, we’re supposed to be using the term DeltaT to indicated the change in air temperature from supply to return air grills.

Good morning and thank you again Brian for sharing your knowledge. Several years back you said that you were thinking about building a trainer from a window unit, did you ever build one? I would like to train a small group of people and a trainer would be nice.
