When I was a little girl, I didn't know why my grandfather was the way he was. He was always apart from us. drinking. alone. One time he called me over while I was playing outside with my cousins in my grandparents house. He never spoke so this was startling. I sat next to him and he began to tell me a story about boats and bullets and having to crawl up a beach. He said if you lifted your head up the bullets would take it off. He said he could only try to bury himself in the sand and he began to dig desperately, he told me. Then he started crying and I was in shock. I had never known a man to cry. But he rocked back and forth and continued...he told me when he was digging he found a rosary in the sand. He cried and showed me a rosary. Then he stayed quiet and stopped talking and just looked and held the rosary as I slunk away from what I thought was a crazy man. I was so little. Now as an adult I understand. He was a Normandy D Day survivor. My mom told me later what it meant. I never knew anything about him but that. I know he stayed there, even if he returned home. I know he lost his mind and heart there. This song brings back my grandfather's memory so vividly. Now I cry too, for his tears were so real, and that's all I ever knew of him.
edit: Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and all medics who stood heroically against horrific circumstances and gave so much to bring our loved ones home. From the waves off the beaches of Normandy and the South Pacific to the waves of Covid we are still battling...thank you with all my heart.

the first verse is about his grandfather who was in military while the second is about Pandemic. The similarity between these two is that many lives were lost. Both soldiers and medical workers witnessed too many people “breathing out”. You don’t have enough time to sleep both on battlefield and in hospital, but the only thing that can pacify your soul after seeing all those terrifying scenes is a dream about a greater power can come to the rescue.
I feel extremely overwhelmed by this song because I lost a friend to illness, something in life really can’t make sense to me. While this is an absolutely incredible song, it’s too heavy for me to listen to.

as a first year doctor in NYC during the time of COVID, this “historical” song is something cut out of a contemporary time. It is lovely as a “story handed down” that this song is about Taylor’s veteran grandfather, but the beauty of music (especially Taylor’s) is that a song can be interpreted one’s own way.
This song makes my experience feel seen in melody and really meant a lot to me to translate this song to my experience (and that of many others who fought COVID on the frontlines).
“Something med school did not cover
    Someone's daughter, someone's mother
Holds your hand through plastic now
‘Doc, I think she's crashing out’
And some things you just can't speak about
    Only twenty minutes to sleep
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what you've seen
With you I serve, with you I fall down, down
Watch you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out”
... could literally be a page from my diary the past few months that found me unprepared but full of unforgettable meaning. So grateful for this gorgeous album 🤧♥️

"Only twenty minutes to sleep, but you dream of some epiphany."
I was bawling when this line was sung because I literally just had a quick nap after a very tiring day at work. Every time I get a little bit tired, I am reminded of last year when I used to regularly visit the hospital due to my cancer diagnosis. I'm glad I'm in a much better state now, but every now and then, I grieve at my past and the uncertain future. My mood was flat and terrible these couple of days, but I'm finally able to cry today while listening to this song. The sadness still lingers but it feels so liberating. Thanks, Taylor.

In many aspects of life time for equality. Art is one of them. Let them be heard in this particular dull moments. Man´s intelligence is nothing without their wisdom. Mysterious, men and women are. Women are a gazillion times more mysterious but a jewel that has to carve herself from the rough.

Someone said: no one gives Mr. Aaron Dessner credit for co-writing and producing this beautiful masterpiece. Woman and man marching along for the same purpose side by side. You can find them creating shoulder to shoulder by going abroad the regular industry cannons and magazines that support them. For the industry it is money that counts not reason or intellect or beauty, feelings, sence. Miss Swift has been set free from contract & freed she has shown us how of a great musician she really is. Then I read the meaning behind this song and every word hit me straight back in my heart. As nurse through this tough time all the faces of all the elderly patients I looked after and lost came back like a stabbing memory, all at once and I started crying. Not just the loss but coping with the ones surviving, trying to explain why they weren't allowed to see their families, promising that everything would be alright soon. Yes, we chose to work in healthcare but we weren't prepared to all this. "something med school did not cover".

As a infantry soldier who didn’t serve in WW2 but in the Middleeast, it’s very relatable and why I’m a 36 year old veteran and a 15 year Taylor fan

Feeling so proud of Taylor, this is the second album that she fully owns. She's come a long way, and this album out of nowhere is a blessing.

We can really see the freedom within her two albums. She could speak anything she likes.

I started listening to Taylor when I was 12, that means 8 years ago, and I can finally say that It's not me who grow up with her songs, she's the one who grows up, she's the one who changed, I discovered her when she was a young dreamy innocent country girl, and now I'm listening to a kind of lullaby writing by the mature lyrics queen "Taylor", and I'm proud of u Taylor, u can finally say that u r a princess who don't live anymore in a small town who reached the stars. All love to u queen❤️
Edit: thank u all for th likes, didn't expect that many of u share the same feelings😭❤️

Same. I was 14 when I first listened to Taylor and every album I saw leaps of her growth. She never fails to strike me with words. I am now turning 26. Those years with her music kept me sane.

Does anyone else think the instruments, especially at the end, kinda sound like the heart rate monitors in hospitals? Like because she was talking about breathing in & out and whatnot. It’s possible I’m imagining that, but if not...she’s so brilliant🤩

I'm lying in the ER right now, listening to this song over and over because it's like Taylor is holding my hand while I wait for answers. Thank you for being with me and us through this.

This song reminds me of my grandmother - a Canadian nurse who served in Italy during WWII. Can't imagine all that she saw, all that she never spoke about. She met my grandfather (a Canadian soldier) when he came to visit his injured friend.
