You would do better with a speed Skim for flattening in .

Bigger the trowel the more pressure on your wrist & elbow. Laying on with that is crazy had a 20" and sold just a massive waste of energy.
If you can't crack out a large gauge with a 14" or 16" theirs not much to say..go back to basics.
He's right 18" and above is for final Polish only.

What I tend to do as my 20 inc is really straight, load up the trowel as if it was a 16, less pressure on the wrist and less chance of the gear falling from the toe and heel of the trowel. Get that initial load on, then I can use the full Length of the trowel to move the gear about and flatten in as I go. For the last couple of wet trowels is switch to a smaller stainless to close it all right in.

24 inch trowel is crazy, but reckon it could be helpful for flattening. i'm retired now, but started plastering in1972, and we only had 11 inch trowels back then, Tyzack was the best trowels back then. Dont think we could get Marshalltowns in uk then. it was game changing when we got the bigger trowels, I only ever used 13 & 14 inch they were big enough for me

Well I’m 50, was born in 74, I was 13 when I 1st got taken to labour for a plasterer. I remember knocking up by hand, marshtowns were about but only 13x5 and 14x3/4. 50kg bags. Things are definitely easier these days! 👍
